Like the training emails that aren’t real phishing emails? I’m basically curious to know if they’re, like, a training method in and of themselves or if they’re collecting data somewhere about who is failing the test.

I’m extremely curious to know if anything would happen if I just clicked all of these; like whether work would reach out with some additional training or a reprimand. But. I’m too chicken to try …

Steam Fall sale is ON! Too brain tired after Nighthawks launch to do a proper marketing for this right now. In the meantime, I will have blind faith that public desire for our games transcendes the need for me to tell everyone to buy them. There. Nailed it. store.steampowered.com/developer/Wa...

Hello! Keep up the good work! (I do not think of myself as a great game reviewer, more as someone who reviewed regularly for 15 years and semi regularly for the past 4.) And I have 2 stories of accidentally being escorted out of press events because people thought I was a lost mum. Not amazing.

Oh, that’s great. That’s a very charming imperfection. My mum was crafty in the 70s. We have various poetic embroideries and also some of my husband Ken’s weird woodworking artefacts; rolling pins etc. He was telling me the other day that he couldn’t be bothered making a rain gauge …

Oh. Cool bowl, though. Similarly, I remember this terrifying primary school scripture teacher who told me I was ‘evil’ because I had ‘crossed the Christ out of Christmas’ because ‘Xmas’ fitted better on the card I was making. I am not religious but even writing ‘Xmas’ on this post freaks me out.

Like. The curator of trash games but also trash games as a cultural phenomenon and valid way of creating. Lots of examples and interviews with that creator.

Can anyone help me find an article on Vice about ‘trash games’? I link this to a student approximately once every 18 months without saving it; and today I cannot find it.

I think ‘being a teacher’ is already becoming weird, thanks to AI. I think it will become weirder.

Meghann O'Neill @firkraags.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
I don’t think there’s a lot of point trying. Mostly because ‘what is morality’ is already a big question. Eg. ‘Socially constructed rule following’ vs ‘having a conscience’ and feeling bad when you do something wrong. Then ‘learning/application’ as human vs machine, based on context.

People. I’m going to Hong Kong for a week to watch my 19yo do sports (for 2 days). Climb to the very large Buddha, eat one of everything, what else do I need to do? Has anyone been a tourist in Hong Kong recently?

Oh really? Amazing. WA? Interesting. Are you games? I’m trying to research games and higher ed. There are actually so many interesting people around. (Especially all of the Tassie people.) It’d be good to find more ways to connect.

Hello! In my 7th year of teaching my own game music composition class at Sydney Con. I let The Institute of Music go this year because of bad health. (Which is now much better, thankfully.) I did one semester in intro game design at MQ last year. Loved it. Where/what are you (if you are) teaching?

My dad gave me a Qbasic manual and told me to make something so I made a game that was supposed to guess your favourite colour but frequently guessed animals. My dad was like, ‘That’s not what programming is for.’ :) (I also made spy mysteries with ACS which my dad liked more.)

I also very explicitly banned the word ‘industry’ from my class (partly because of Brendan’s book) and then I was sitting in the back of a lecture and students booed the teacher’s use of the word and I was like ‘uh oh’. Words matter, at any rate.

To be fair to my colleagues there’s a lot of peer reviewed academic writing which includes the word ‘hallucinate’ which is annoying. Getting the right word is a bit of a fixation for me. For example I have no idea why anyone would ever use the word ‘seminal’ when ‘foundational’ is perfectly fine.

(Disclaimer, these systems being ‘amoral’ is also not really correct, but somewhat moreso in my argument against describing their actions as human …)
110
Meghann O'Neill @firkraags.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
Slightly tangential but I accidentally made some people at work annoyed by insisting that ‘hallucinate’ is the wrong word because hallucinations are situated in biological and social (even spiritual) contexts. And not at all akin to ‘amoral pattern errors’.

I do have a sense that your thoughts are backed up my lots more thoughts. (Communicating ideas/research is a challenge …) But yeah. Higher education in Aus is not one thing, it’s partially categories of things, but also just a big complex picture. I think this complexity gets lost a lot.

Meghann O'Neill @firkraags.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
Also. Thanks for this thread. I am trying to write up a thing at the moment (I’m a very novice researcher) and I was trying to address ‘broader higher ed’ in a way that seems to be very logistical call difficult (and a big design flaw of my research) so your first point is productive to think about.

Meghann O'Neill @firkraags.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
I’m starting to get very fixated on the question of ‘what is teaching’ (which is my day job in Aus higher ed). I used to wonder ‘what is learning’ and I still do, just both now …

Still on this topic, and after having marked a bunch of very normal games this morning, this is also something that really is happening. I am interesting to know how education actually could evolve to some new better place. (Worse for sure, but also better?) www.smh.com.au/national/che...

I've been vaguely trying to read academic research around the pedagogical impacts of the basic current free tools, but even academics' blog posts (which don't require years long review etc) seem to become irrelevant very fast, if they even were relevant in the first place. Often seems hard to tell.

I can relate to environmental and plagiarism discourse around AI. But, where is the larger future being discussed? I'm not even sure why anyone would claim to really understand what the future may hold yet.

This week's framing of AI as an 'arms race' (with unknowable parameters) makes more sense to me. I've never understood why my workplaces have so enthusiastically adopted tools they don't seem to understand, or why people are angry with their granny for making a shopping list with an obsequious LLM.
