I am sure there are a lot of shell scripts in the midst of all the FORTRAN and C code that run the weather models.

After taking a stab at learning some new languages, I honestly think the shell scripting realm is what I should pick up next as my second area to Python as it is very intertwined to the projects I am doing in Python.

Interesting... I thought they were more Linux.

I think it's good to know both. You can emulate a Linux terminal via the git bash but if your IT department doesn't allow git bash then windows powershell become more important.

When I interned at AccuWeather in 2015, they used Mac but other than that I haven't seen Mac.

I'll check but I wouldn't think JOSS would have fees.

The main place I've worked that uses Linux are the AWIPS machines in the NWS. Otherwise, everything else I've seen is Windows.

It's very good to learn Linux shell and I like that the computer programming courses in MET departments teach Linux shell commands. However, I also think it is important to learn Windows Powershell in addition to Linux shell as most work places I've been use Windows as the OS on their computers.

Great! I don't have much experience with this stuff but I know it is very nit picky with lots of technicalities and I don't want the situation of I do this work and it gets denied on the grounds of "you have no affiliation which is a required field."

I was able to present on WxData at a small conference last March where I was there on worktime. However, I had to put a disclaimer on my presentation that this work is all my own and has no affiliation with the company.

You know much more than me! I didn't spend a single day in graduate school.

For me I believe it is we are allowed to do it as a hobby but we are not allowed on work time nor are we allowed to use any company assets or invoke the company brand in anyway. But there is no prohibition to my knowledge as the company supports learning and professional development which this is.

I'll look into it but given JOSS stands for the Journal of Open Source Software there is nothing open-source about paywall fees. I am able to read JOSS papers without paying for access.

I know most cases people don't have this issue because it isn't an issue in academia or in the government public sector. But when you are doing a passion project as a hobby and work in the private sector, this issue is real.

One question I have for academics is when I eventually hopefully write a paper on WxData, can I refuse to put an institution after my name? My project is a hobby and it is not recognized nor sanctioned by my employer and thus I can't put my "institution" after my name.

It feels somewhat boring (boring in a good way) watching the Californian Gubernatorial Debate as a Californian because we all know Xavier Beccera is our next governor and Steve Hilton has zero chance. Yeah I wouldn't go as far as he did calling college a scam. But at the same time I can sympathize with some of his talking points - enough that I certainly won't try to lecture him trying to tell him he is wrong.
