And finally we get the Chamber of Commerce policy proposals, stated clearly for the respondents to accept as their own: more funding, less tolerance. Local businesses are ready for daddy government to bring some order to Asheville's house.
9. What one message would you most like government leaders to hear? (Required.)
Option: Public safety is a core service of local government and should be the highest priority in terms of funding
Option: We don’t want to be perceived as enabling criminal activity in our community
Option: Keep up the good work
Option: We need more City and County services to support a safe environment

"Identify up to three things government leaders are currently doing that are working well." Two thirds of the suggested responses are just variations on "policing and surveillance," because that's what the Chamber of Commerce is hoping to reinforce.
8. Identify up to three things government leaders are currently doing that are working well. (Required.)

"What changes would have the greatest positive impact on your business?" Response options are written to boost specific Chamber of Commerce policy goals—and those goals are uniformly carceral. We don't get healthcare, opportunities for youth, traffic calming, mediation programs, etc.
7. What changes would have the greatest positive impact on your business? (Required.)
Option: Putting non-profit organizations on equal footing with businesses for consequences if they don’t provide security while providing services
Option: More activation of areas that have seen frequent problems
Option: Better lighting of areas that have seen frequent problems
Option: Prosecution of criminal activity, regardless of the cause
Option: More public safety officer presence

"How has crime or public safety affected your business during the past 12 months?" Survey questions provide leading answers and conflate safety with law and order. In this one, there's no clear way to disagree with the authors' perspective; even the outlier option is qualified by "directly."
3. How has crime or public safety affected your business during the past 12 months? Check all that apply. (Required.)
Option: The reputation of lawlessness in our community is damaging my business or property value
Option: My employees or coworkers experienced a public safety or crime incident
Option: My business hasn’t been directly impacted
Option: Fear of the area is driving away customers
Option: My business experienced a public safety or crime incident

"they're not asking for the teacher to be fired" 🤡
What are they asking for?

In addition to opting out of the class, they're asking for their children not to be disciplined for calling the teacher "Mr." or using male pronouns. They're asking for written assurances that gender identity will not be discussed by teachers; that the music teacher will not be permitted to use a restroom at the same time as a student; and that school staff will not retaliate against children who opt out of class.

What they're not asking for is for the teacher to be fired. There are legal protections for employment without discrimination to gender identity.

recovery. What we've seen is growing homelessness as the housing stock not damaged or destroyed surges in price beyond the stagnating local wages. We see police budgets increase as they buy more surveillance toys and peddle anti-poor propaganda calling for more funds. Asheville doesn't need a G20 meeting to ease money upward. Join community members for upcoming presentations to talk about what the G20 does, what a summit will mean for us here, and how the world is resisting."

Members of our collective, and more than 20 others who turned out against surveillance, weren't allowed to speak at tonight's city council meeting. Here are the unheard remarks one of us had prepared.
Hi my name is Libertie and I’m a co-owner of Firestorm Books, an 18 year old co-operative bookstore in West Asheville. Now I realize you may be thinking “of course the anarchist bookstore is against giving money to the police, they want to abolish the police, turn all the hotels into free housing, and replace this city council with a network of directly democratic neighborhood assemblies.” And you’re right, we do. But I think as a group with direct experience being a target of APD surveillance, we also have a perspective valuable to the conversation.

A real time intelligence center is a trojan horse designed to entangle Asheville in surveillance-driven attacks on vulnerable communities. This administration and aligned state governments rely heavily on surveillance infrastructure to carry out the ethnic cleansing of immigrants, the genocidal erasure of queer and trans people, and the criminalization of reproductive care. The city may have asked for these funds, but Chuck Edwards isn't offering them out of the goodness of his heart. And the misuse of surveillance data collected by Asheville police isn’t theoretical, it’s already happening. On April 15th of 2025, APD conducted drone surveillance at our bookstore on Haywood Road at the request of Georgia law enforcement. During a public presentation by civil rights activists opposed to the construction of a new police training facility in Atlanta, police conspicuously filmed attendees and other customers engaging in First Amendment activities at our shop.

This interstate cooperation demonstrates the lack of guardrails, and taken alongside other instances of surveillance, reveals a disturbing pattern of politically-motivated monitoring—notably in direct violation of the city’s 2013 civil liberties resolution. The uselessness of that 2013 resolution, rarely if ever even mentioned in this building, tells us something about the future of today's civil liberties resolution. Calling for a ceasefire while you continue to drop bombs isn't peace, it's just politics.

I urge you to say no to this million dollar check in the shape of a pony.

A screenshot of the employee controlled Instagram account shows a post from staff with over 6,300 likes and hundred of reshares. The post reads "Hey Y'all, long time (10 years 💔) employee of Vortex Doughnuts here."A photo of a text exchange between an employee and owner Mollie Skalski. The employee says "Hey I really need to know because I have auto pays due the next couple days are we getting our paychecks this week?" Mollie replies "Unfortunately that is one of the reasons why we closed abruptly. We don't have enough money for payroll or any of the other things that need paid. There is more money going out than coming in. We tried to get a loan to help with that but no luck. I would suggest you apply for emergency unemployment. That's always why we were offering the equipment to offset that. I know that's not what you want to hear and again we are truly sorry."
