Summary:
"Gentleman, what a perfect time to inform you of the revised requirements of your major assignment for this class," Professor Xiao Xingchen told the pair. Wei Ying was forced to sit down. He knew that tone, and it said that Professor Xiao was done with their bullshit, and wouldn't hesitate to toss one or the other out of the room for the rest of their creative writing class.

"I believe that this will be a treat for you, given how much you like a challenge." Professor Xiao's smile could only be described as diabolical as he looked at Wei Ying and Lan Zhan. "I'm assigning you both to discover the joys of co-writing a novel. I believe that the classic office romance with rivals to lovers trope would be delightful, with the added spice of an unhappy ending. Doesn't that sound like it works to both of your strengths?"

Wei Ying's stomach dropped and he heard the chair across the table screech as Lan Zhan stood abruptly.

I'm gonna fail, Wei Ying realised. I'm totally gonna fail and it'll be all his fault.

Thankfully, Wei Ying was good at being a slippery little sucker, and freed himself so that he could make it over to the sink to get water. He might have lost his emotional support blanket in doing so, but he was still free!

"Wei Ying," Lan Zhan huffed. Still in control, but his patience was fraying. Which wasn't Wei Ying's fault! Lan Zhan just didn't know how to be a good visitor!

He leaned on the edge of the sink, filling the mug with water. Ooft, he was tired. And hot. And cold. Maybe he could nap for a bit, maybe for a few years. Surely he wouldn't need long to get over this flu.

"Is there anyone I can call for you?" Lan Zhan asked from behind him. "You won't accept a doctor, but where is Nie Huaisang?"

He answered as he was plopping a tea bag into the mug. "He's off doing Huaisang stuff. Secret. Weird. Maybe convincing a bunch of people to worship him. Hey, how many minutes?"

Poor Lan Zhan looked adorably bemused by the question. "How many minutes?"

"In the microwave?"

"In the microwave? What does the microwave have to do with anything?"

Wei Ying gave a somewhat wet snort. "How else do you make tea?"

Had he not been afraid of coughing up both lungs if he tried, Wei Ying would have laughed at the horrified expression on Lan Zhan's face.

"You make tea in a teapot. With water boiled in a kettle." Lan Zhan moved quickly and took the mug out of Wei Ying's hands and pushed him very determinedly toward his bedroom. "Bed. Now. You are not making me tea. You are not microwaving tea for me. Nor are you going to be doing anything but resting."

Wei Ying tried to suck in a wet breath through blocked sinuses, failed, and heaved an even wetter sigh. It sounded gross, and he felt even grosser. “Don’t be mean, I’m literally held together by snot and pitiful moans right now.”

“So dramatic. Go play your tiny violin on a street corner and see if someone will donate a fainting couch for you to drape yourself over like a frail Victorian maiden.” Nie Huaisang huffed. “I won’t be back for another week. Why don't you call your parents to come and take care of you? Maybe they'll keep you from doing something stupid. Again.”

Alarm was an ugly shiver down Wei Ying's spine. “No, no, no, that’s not an option. Mama will be all cruel kindness and awful home remedies that she inherited from Aunty Baoshan, and Baba will quietly support her as retribution for my folly.” He adored his parents, but their bedside manners were full of tough love and sketchy recipes.

Oh, so they were playing that game, huh? Lan Wangji narrows his eyes at his brother. “Says the man who tried to flutter his eyelashes at the police chief’s son to try and get out of his eleventh parking fine of the month. Who also put so many Boomer Mom inspirational signs in his car that there was no hope of seeing any other car on the road -”

Lan Xichen squawks in indignation. “Don't you dare bring my -”

There's a warm, fuzzy feeling that Lan Zhan gets when his favourite barista at his favourite cafe gets his order right. Not that he expects Wei Ying to get anything wrong, but he's been burned - sometimes even literally - many times before by baristas who think boiling water is perfectly fine for brewing green tea.

Lan Zhan drops some coins in the tip jar before moving away from the counter to wait. He even decides that today he's going to stand in the sunbeam that shines through the large windows of the cafe. It's just the right time of year to make it toasty warm and not a laser. Spring in Melbourne can be any one season in a single day, but it looks like the September morning has decided to be kind.

Way to make friends, Wei Ying. You should know better than this. He tried again. “Do you like my garden?” He waved at the profusion of summer flowers around his cottage. There was no order to it; he liked to toss seeds in random places in spring and see what happened later.
It didn’t stop him from being proud of it, though.
“It -” His pretty new friend stopped and looked down at his feet. Wei Ying tilted his head, wondering if maybe he was shy…
The sharp little squeak was so unexpected a sound that Wei Ying jolted. What - had he - he took a step forward, wondering why his friend was frozen in place, not even appearing to breathe…
He forgot about his gardening tools. That single step was all it took for his foot to hit the spade lying on the ground, and that was enough to send him tripping forward, right into - “Oof!” They hit, or rather, Wei Ying hit his friend, and they both stumbled this time. He had a brief moment of Oooh, he’s solid muscle, before he then went plummeting to the ground

As an established, confident man in his 40s, Wei Ying usually had more poise than this. Unfortunately, like his twenty year old, decrepit computer that he couldn't bear to part with, the blue-screen was inevitable.

Wei Ying.exe has stopped working.

It took him a moment to realise that the beautiful sprite staring at him was probably staring out of disgust. The contrast between them was stark; Wei Ying had been gardening all morning around his cottage, and was dirty and sweaty and just gross. By comparison, the beauty standing before him wore something white and flowy and perfectly suited to the warm weather, his long braid of hair tied at the end with a blue ribbon. Want to touch, but can't touch.
