Summary:

He knew that tone, and it said that Professor Xiao was done with their bullshit, and wouldn't hesitate to toss one or the other out of the room for the rest of their creative writing class.

"I believe that this will be a treat for you, given how much you like a challenge." Professor Xiao's smile could only be described as diabolical as he looked at Wei Ying and Lan Zhan. "I'm assigning you both to discover the joys of co-writing a novel. I believe that the classic office romance with rivals to lovers trope would be delightful, with the added spice of an unhappy ending. Doesn't that sound like it works to both of your strengths?"

Wei Ying's stomach dropped and he heard the chair across the table screech as Lan Zhan stood abruptly.

Thankfully, Wei Ying was good at being a slippery little sucker, and freed himself so that he could make it over to the sink to get water. He might have lost his emotional support blanket in doing so, but he was still free!

"Wei Ying," Lan Zhan huffed. Still in control, but his patience was fraying. Which wasn't Wei Ying's fault! Lan Zhan just didn't know how to be a good visitor!

He leaned on the edge of the sink, filling the mug with water. Ooft, he was tired. And hot. And cold. Maybe he could nap for a bit, maybe for a few years. Surely he wouldn't need long to get over this flu.

"Is there anyone I can call for you?" Lan Zhan asked from behind him. "You won't accept a doctor, but where is Nie Huaisang?"

He answered as he was plopping a tea bag into the mug. "He's off doing Huaisang stuff. Secret. Weird. Maybe convincing a bunch of people to worship him. Hey, how many minutes?"

Poor Lan Zhan looked adorably bemused by the question. "How many minutes?"

"In the microwave?"

"In the microwave? What does the microwave have to do with anything?"

Wei Ying gave a somewhat wet snort. "How else do you make tea?"

Had he not been afraid of coughing up both lungs if he tried, Wei Ying would have laughed at the horrified expression on Lan Zhan's face.

"You make tea in a teapot. With water boiled in a kettle." Lan Zhan moved quickly and took the mug out of Wei Ying's hands and pushed him very determinedly toward his bedroom. "Bed. Now. You are not making me tea. You are not microwaving tea for me. Nor are you going to be doing anything but resting."

Go play your tiny violin on a street corner and see if someone will donate a fainting couch for you to drape yourself over like a frail Victorian maiden.” Nie Huaisang huffed. “I won’t be back for another week. Why don't you call your parents to come and take care of you? Maybe they'll keep you from doing something stupid. Again.”

Alarm was an ugly shiver down Wei Ying's spine. “No, no, no, that’s not an option. Mama will be all cruel kindness and awful home remedies that she inherited from Aunty Baoshan, and Baba will quietly support her as retribution for my folly.” He adored his parents, but their bedside manners were full of tough love and sketchy recipes.

Another WIP for my @bottomjibigbang.bsky.social fic! Wei Ying cooks and Lan Zhan eats (feat. Malaysian Chinese Wei Ying 🤩)

On his third bite of Wei Ying’s cooking, Lan Zhan starts coughing and can’t stop.

The tickling sensation had initially started as a peat fire in his belly. A gradual outward spreading of warmth, as though he’d swallowed a mouthful of smouldering coal, but now the flames are licking their way up his throat, torching the thin flesh at the back of his mouth to sandpaper, roiling across his tongue like ash. He’s bent double over the dish before he realises it, clutching and clawing ineffectually at his own mouth, his ears, his neck, wheezing dismally as the tears carry him from one fiery exhale and into the next.

Mind racing, sinuses screaming, gut protesting, recalling in slow motion the sight of his own hands pounding the handful of dried chilli padis to a pulp on his mother’s old granite mortar. And then, stir-frying the mixture with a dash of hot oil and a small cup of minced garlic, breathing in the fragrant scents of Wei Ying’s childhood in Port Klang; a halcyon time of riding his bicycle down narrow lanes, scooping chunks of fresh Red Prawn from dirty Styrofoam containers with his fingers, and dashing home from school to the tangy, sweltering aroma of his mother’s cooking.

Chilli pan mee. Wei Ying’s undisputed favourite as a boy, and thus, an important puzzle piece as to his truest and deepest self. All of his family history and fiercely kept secrets, indelibly soaked into this unassuming, humble dish; a symphony of complicated yet complimentary flavours, bursting with the quietest, most selfless order of love.

And here Lan Zhan is, choking on it.

Like a fucking weirdo was certainly a way to describe how Lan Wangji had thought of Wei Wuxian, though not necessarily one that was accurate to his own experience. Like a fucking storm that showed him what desire and freedom meant and changed his life life forever, maybe.

Lan Zhan shrugs. How can he explain a decision he’d made nearly two decades ago, revisit his past considerations and aspirations, young and arrogant as he’d been back then? “I wanted — more than anything else — to find a partner. To fall in love, to marry, and to have a home to bring them back to, where they’d always be safe and loved. My flat would have been a place to share, to keep, and to call our own.” The admission feels like a hot drop of acid in his belly.

“So what happened?”

Lan Zhan hesitates. He can sense Wei Ying listening, rapt and curious and nonjudgemental, and it spurs him on. “I just… couldn’t find anyone. I tried. I put myself out there, but it’s never been easy for me to get close to people. Socializing is fine, and I generally do well both in groups or one-on-one, but I’ve always struggled to open up, to make myself truly vulnerable in a way that would be attractive — romantically and emotionally — to someone else.”

He pauses, reaching for the mortifying, damning truth, and finding it. “I met so many people through dating events, but I didn’t fall for a single one. I’m nearly forty-one now, yet I’ve never even held another person’s hand, or kissed anyone, or —”

“Or had sex?”

Lan Zhan freezes: heart racing in his chest, sweat prickling beneath his underarms. The air-conditioning whines on, yet the air in the room feels abruptly muggy, pushing against his lungs with a warm, syrupy intensity. Between his legs, his cock is rock-hard.

Quietly, quickly, Wei Ying says, “There’s absolutely nothing wrong with —”

“Or had sex,” Lan Zhan confirms.

In the ensuing silence, fraught yet unapologetic as it is, he senses Wei Ying mulling this over. The sudden depth of this understanding surprises him, almost to the point of tears; he’d expected Wei Ying to laugh, to tease, to minimize, to insult. Wei Ying’s empathy — If it can even be called that, Lan Zhan thinks — is a vast, bottomless thing, warm and thorough as a tropical storm.

“It doesn’t matter,” Wei Ying says. Heated, unquestioning, unbearably gentle. “You’re — you. And anyone who falls in love with you will just have to meet you where you are. You have nothing to regret, nothing to be ashamed of.”
