Fionnuala Walsh @fionnualawalsh.bsky.social · 01/09/2026The Freethinker periodical rejecting a poetry submission in 1890: ‘the verse is meritorious in its sentiment but defective in workmanship’ - nicely succinct rejection! A rather entertaining journal to read, despite the frequent jokes at expense of the Irish in its ‘Profane Jokes’ section. 010
Fionnuala Walsh @fionnualawalsh.bsky.social · 18/04/2026Realising however the importance of looking at digitised handwritten return - transcription had listed one great-grandfather aged 34 rather than 54 - my father became worried about possible teen marriages! 040
Fionnuala Walsh @fionnualawalsh.bsky.social · 18/04/2026There’s something special about finding grandparents as young children in the 1926 census. Finding little details too like Great grandad Francis Kelly was a ‘rationalist’ and being reminded of my grandads lost little brother among the Pugin-Meldons in the divergence between children born and living. 1110

Fionnuala Walsh @fionnualawalsh.bsky.social · 10/03/2025My books finally arrived! Very grateful to the team at @cambridgeup.bsky.social for the superb production and supporting the project. Thinking today of the late David Fitzpatrick who began this project and to whom it is dedicated, and also of my mother who would have loved to see it in print. 128519
Fionnuala Walsh @fionnualawalsh.bsky.social · 07/02/2025I’m very much looking forward to receiving my copy of this though It think bittersweet is a very apt word for the emotions arising from it’s publication. Great to see it is out in the world, I’m very grateful to Ciarán and the other contributors for sticking with it over the years. 0144

Fionnuala Walsh @fionnualawalsh.bsky.social · 18/11/2024I listened to this interview while on my commute this morning and found it v moving. So much resonated with my experience of losing my mother to cancer in August. Tom’s comment re his Grandad eating ready meals now reminded me so much too of the stuff my little nephews and nieces have said since. 140
