And yes, I am stuck in a signal failure at Haywards Heath again. Why don't more people take trams instead of driving? Because when you set out on a train journey, you have no idea when you will arrive.

I got side tracked from the reading list by The Stations. There was something about a story of young Irish people coming to London in the 80's that somehow appealed to me. I knew most of the characters. And so does the author.

Have I mentioned May we feed the king? No. Good neither should you. It's the sort of stuff that gives self indulgence a bad name so will probably win the Booker prize, God help us.

Getting back on track, John of John is more than decent read. A proper novel about real people in a real place. That respects both the people and the place. My booker winner so far (though I still have a few to go)

Abu Dhabi want you all to know that they absolutely don't own Manchester City but if Manchester City are sanctioned for their industrial scale cheating, then the UAE could pull all investment from Britain.

In a desperate attempt to catch up, I'm a big fan of Emma Cline but do not read Switzy if you are over the age of about 40. It will tell you stuff you just don't want to know about what's going to happen to you. And it will do it very well!

I think it's rather unfair of the Booker prize judges to announce the shortlist before the rest of us have a chance to finish reading the long list. We can't all sit around reading books all day you know!

Have to wonder what exactly in his life experience has brought Andrew Bailey to the conclusion that, when people's cost of living increases, jacking up their mortgage costs as well will make them less likely to seek a wage increase?

The argument that the well off also benefit is also silly. The income tax system (and NI on all income) is the simple and fair way do deal with this.

One man - Christopher Harborne - has given over £15m to Reform UK and Farage since August 2025. In that time, the three largest unions in the UK - Unison, Unite and GMB - gave a combined £2,282,516 to Labour. They represent millions of people. And they cover 15% of one billionaire's total.

London's homicide rate hit its lowest level since records began. Yet 40% of the public thought that murders had risen since 2019. That’s the danger of disinformation. We cannot accept it, and to defeat it, we’ve got to put pressure on the social media companies who profit from it.

With over 870 school streets in London, 66% of kids are now getting to school by active travel. Every day there are 73,915 fewer cars doing the school run than when we started in 2016 - that’s the equivalent of a traffic jam from London to Newcastle.

As for The Shadow of the Object, this was a great short story that was unwisley turned into a novel. A really interesting start that went nowhere and told me nothing I didn't already know. Apart from a nice trip along the Thames which had sod all to do with the rest of the book.

There is a section about three quarters way through where both the main character and the plot seems to get lost for a bit, but that may very well be a me problem (to borrow a phrase from my teenage son).
