Our TropEco Lab has been busy in the last three months: three teams across four regions in the Brazilian Amazon and Ghanaian forests. A quick summary of the joy and madness of our #fieldwork across continents.
Image was taken from a tower with camera facing down. It shows the forest from the top, a dirty road crossing the Center and disappearing under the tree canopy. Also shows a small fieldwork white truck and solar panel used to power the equipment in the tower.Image shows a massive Bako tree (Tieghemella heckelii) with a scientist standing with arms up to show the large dimensions of the tree. The background is mostly green with smaller trees and the ground is brown with multiple dry leaves.Image shows a baby white-cheeked spider monkey (Ateles marginatus) trying to hide in the black hair of the scientist. The scientist is looking down, so you can see most of its hair and the baby monkey in the top, looking to the side. In the blurred background, it is possible to see the Indigenous houses made of wood walls and leaf roofs, a bright blue sky and some trees in the Panará Indigenous Territory, in Brazil.Image shows four man trying to carry a tree trunk they just cut to build a bridge to cross a river, so they can continue their track to the field plot. The photo shows the base of cut tree. The fallen tree is on the side. The man wear long sleeves (two with dark blue,’one gray, one black) and all are holding the tree trunk, trying to carry it.

An overwhelming majority of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon is unauthorized (illegal). A data-driven report from August/2023 to July/2024, cross-referencing deforestation with clearing permits, confirms this heartbreaking reality. Read more below ⬇️ #AmazonDeforestation #LawEnforcement

91% of Brazilian Amazon deforestation last year was illegal, report finds
Nearly all deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon in the past year was illegal, a new report finds. Between August 2023 and July 2024, 91% of forest clearing in the Amazon lacked authorization, accordi...

The taxonomic biases in biodiversity data are growing over time. The amount of data we are collecting is growing, but the biases get bigger. We need to make a conscious effort to study the understudied! #SciComms #Science #Taxonomy 🧪 image from Troudet et al 2018 @natureportfolio.bsky.social

There are many ways in which the potential marriage of the goals tackling climate change and restoring biodiversity is a good thing. But also real dangers of an abusive relationship if biodiversity is subordinated to an overpowering drive for carbon sequestration and biofuels.

The climate and biodiversity crises are entwined, but we risk pitting one against the other
In our race to cool the planet, we must not compromise the ecosystems on which we depend.

The little things we find doing #fieldwork in the #AmazonForest. Unsure about the wasp species, but amazed with the nest structure.
A wasp nest behind a leaf. The nest is built as a very thin layer in the back of the leaf, occupying the center of the leaf while leaving 1-2 cm borders of leaf. The back of the leaf is green, while the nest has a mix of green and light brown straps that gives the look of a dry leaf. There is an opening in the bottom of the nest, where 4 to five time wasps are positioned. Other wasps are present at the borders of the leaf, around the nest. There is some signs of herbivore on the leaf, and the nest follows the shape of the herbivore marks.
