As new technologies develop, policy continues to drag far behind. What we're seeing with Flock & Meta glasses are clear examples of how this is harmful. Our director, @evangreer.bsky.social spoke to @nytimes.com about this. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/24/t...

A company does not need to verify a users age to prevent multiple people from using the same credentials and any company making this claim is lying. They can prevent people this issue by putting login caps on each account, the same way Netflix does, or push for two factor authentication.

Great question. Most companies like Discord know that governments are working to push age verification on everyone and they are complying in advance. They shouldn't. Age verification mandates need to be getting push-back in both government and corporate arenas.

Good to see reporters calling what's happening in San Francisco what it really is: Surveillance maximalism. The leadership of the city sees no problem they can't solve by defunding resources that prevent crime and pouring all their money, plus all the money offered by billionaires, into policing.

But by rolling out ID checks worldwide, Discord, YouTube, etc are creating the conditions for more censorship and surveillance in places where it's not yet law.
