From the FT: "Demis has been playing the role of AI statesman for some time, and Koray has been running the Google DeepMind research for some time. So this is a formalisation of something that had been happening," said Sebastian Mallaby, author of The Infinity Machine, a biography of Hassabis.
"DeepMind's mission has always been to solve AGI and then use it to solve everything else. The solving AGI piece is pretty much done. So it makes sense that Demis is shifting his energy from the science to the social impact."

This is the wrong distinction. The mafia also acts on principle. T doesn’t understand people whose principle for action isn’t always-be-richer.
Krugman: There was a comment by Adam Serwer, I think just a day or two ago, that Trump doesn't understand people who act on principle, that the Venezuelan regime was just thugs. It was just a mafia. The Iranians are thugs, they're horrible, they're murderers but they actually also believe in something. They're genuine religious fanatics and that actually seems to have completely caught Trump and his people off guard.

Great question posed by @adamtooze.bsky.social in his chartbook this morning.
It seems obvious that Trump is the Baudrillardian President.
No less obvious is the fact that there is a real
geopolitical agenda at work in the effort to decapitate Iran. That geopolitics may be that of Netanyahu, but it is nonetheless real. At least as far as the Middle East is concerned, there is an inveterate revisionist strain in US policy which became apparent with Biden.
But what I am not sure of, is whether the broader framing of Baudrillard's analyss is any longer relevant.
This may be unfair, Baudrillard specialists feel free to weigh in, but his framing seems basically functional. He was explaining how a system cohered.
In 2026 does that presume too much?
Do we live in a world in which the question of popular legitimation for war, or the legality of Trump's actions - the classic questions still posed by war-making in the period between Vietnam and Iraq and implicitly answered by Baudrillard - still matter very much any more?

According to Donovan, songwriter and performer of the hit 1960s song, "Mellow Yellow", the Coca-Cola Company contacted him to discuss directly basing the soda's name on his song, which itself was named after a dildo called the "Mellow Yellow." This makes Mello
Yello the only mass-produced soda whose name is known to derive from a dildo.

This remark from Tamara Kolda that closes the article hints at something critical about our relationship to technology. From www.nytimes.com/2026/02/07/s...
One of my growing concerns is that A.I. could inadvertently slow scientific progress. The theoretical physicist Max Planck is often credited with saying that "science advances one funeral at a time." I am mindful that I may be quite wrong in my viewpoints. However, if my opinion becomes encoded into A.I. systems and persists indefinitely, will it hinder the evolution of new scientific ideas?

Amazing exchange. You can feel the contempt breaking like waves against a rockface, barely leaving a mark. It would take eons to erode the thickness.
One thing reporters try to do is to spotlight ideas or news stories, and what you're trying to do is spotlight her face and its beauty. I do see a real similarity there.
Yeah. We were trying to do the best we could. Again, as I told you, I was the guy with a camera, with a couple of assistants in the Trumps' apartment when they came back to the White House at night. So there's an interview with Melania at that point, and we organized the lights in the best possible way.
It's important to make them look as good as possible, too. That's part of your job, or our job.
It's not about making them look as good as possible. It is about making them look as they are without having anything that is distinctively not nice or proper.

Masaki Fujihata on interactivity vs reactivity, 2008.
E: The audience is a very important part of your work and I wonder again whether they are also a 'site of production', and by interacting they produce the piece. But, when the work isn't interactive, do they still provide this function?
M: I am strongly trying to question what is interactivity, between the pieces and with the visitor (and maybe I can say'participant' or'user' in this case). In the last 10 years people have been over using the buzz word 'interactive art. The term 'interactive comes from computer technology. The computer was so slow in the 70's when engineers first tried to add interactivity. At that time, an interactive terminal meant that when you typed a word, characters would appear on the screen. This was an interactive terminal! [laughs] but I should say this is 'reactive, it's a reaction from the computer. Even today, most of the interactive art showing is 99% reactive. The term "interactive" has a deeper meaning and can be used to describe public space, social areas, and social interaction. How we communicate, how we talk, and how we meet each other is interactive and of course when we see a painting or read a novel we interact with it.

Throughout the interview, Trump relied on Natalie Harp — an aide he calls "A.I." because she searches for things on the internet and delivers documents at his request. She assisted him in passing out a few visual aides including one titled "Trump on TikTok" highlighting the president's popularity on the platform.

“Ineffability” has been getting dumped on a lot here of late -- somewhat uncritically imo — but it has its respected defenders. Here’s Schrödinger:
The working of an organism requires exact physical laws
If it were not so, if we were organisms so sensitive that a single atom, or even a few atoms, could make a perceptible impression on our senses-Heavens, what would life be like!
To stress one point: an organism of that kind would most certainly not be capable of developing the kind of orderly thought which, after passing through a long sequence of earlier stages, ultimately results in forming, among many other ideas, the idea of an atom.
Even though we select this one point, the following considerations would essentially apply also to the functioning of organs other than the brain and the sensorial system. Never-theless, the one and only thing of paramount interest to us in ourselves is, that we feel and think and perceive. To the physiological process which is responsible for thought and sense all the others play an auxiliary part, at least from the human point of view, if not from that of purely objective biology. Moreover, it will greatly facilitate our task to choose for investigation the process which is closely accompanied by subjective events, even though we are ignorant of the true nature of this close parallelism. Indeed, in my view, it lies outside the range of natural science and very probably of human understanding altogether.

Frederic Kaplan (quoted by Stiegler) on the economic dimension of autocorrect:

What do the actors of linguistic capitalism fear? Language that eludes them, that breaks, is 'misspelled', that becomes impossible to put into equations. When the search engine corrects on the fly a word that you have spelled incorrectly, it does not do so only to help you: most often, it transforms something without any significant value (a misspelled word) into a directly profitable economic resource.

At a moment of reflection on the relationship between big tech and right-wing politics, it’s interesting to recall the early days of ecommerce and the convenient affinity between libertarians and corps. From Simon Singh’s _The Code Book_, 1999
Possibly the greatest allies of the civil libertarian cause are the big cor-Porations. Internet commerce is still in its intancy, but sales are growing rapidly, with retailers of books, music CDs and computer software leading the way, and with supermarkets, travel companies and other businesses following in their wake. In 1998 a million Britons used the Internet to buy products worth $600 million, a figure that was set to quadruple in 1999. In just a few years from now Internet commerce could dominate the market-place, but only if businesses can address the issues of security and trust. A business must be able to guarantee the privacy and security of financial transactions, and the only way to do this is to employ strong encryption.

From a profile of Jack Whitten in NYRB www.nybooks.com/articles/202...
Visual art is about perception, he wrote, and our perception is changed by our technology in ways we probably cannot fully comprehend; painting, however, can grapple with those changes, record and combat them, hold the past and the future in relation. Whitten’s belief that painting can provide this essential service to the world partly accounts for the inexplicable vitality and ubiquity of painting today: we live in a world dominated by images, digitally dematerialized and endlessly proliferating on screens. But in painting we encounter images as embodied things; painting is a very old technology that we can use to work out our relationship with these images—something impossible to do within the infinitely flickering scroll.

It seems fair to say that mathematicians are impressed with the current performance of models, and, furthermore, see interesting avenues for augmenting mathematical research using AI tools. However, many mathematicians view the rhetoric that “math can be solved”, extrapolating from progress on competition-style mathematics viewed as a game, as problematic at best, and at worst presenting a fundamental misunderstanding of the goals of research mathematics as a whole.
