While there were plenty of european-based inspirations for art nouveau, from study of medieval art to the pre-raphaelites, one of the larger inspirations for the form this art movement would take was Japanese Woodblock Printing. The wave of enthusiasm followed the forced reopening of trade.

"Foreigners in the Drawing Room of Foreign Merchant's House in Yokohama", a series of wood block prints by Sadahide Gountei, 1861. In the scene, a european merchant family rests in a manor built in their familiar architecture amongst food and drink and music. The family is waited upon and scrutinized by a trio of japanese people dressed in their traditional fashion. A number of european-styles sailing ships, two of which fly flags for France and the United States, float in the water outside the windows.

"The Unicorn in Captivity", one of a series of tapestries created by unknown artists between 1495 and 1505. A unicorn is featured resting in a small fenced-in area amongst wild grasses, countless flowers, and a single pomegranate tree. The unicorn has some small but still-bleeding wounds and wears a collar with a chain attached to the tree.

"Ophelia", an oil on canvas painting by Sir John Everett Millais, 1852. A young woman, Ophelia from Shakespeare's Hamlet, lies on her back in a river surrounded by aquatic grasses and a broken tree limb. She seems to stare off into space as she holds a garland of flowers and begins to sink.

Did you know? Art Nouveau sought to break down the barriers between the fine arts, like paintings and sculpture, to more applied arts in everyday life. So in addition to many well-known pieces being advertisements, the aesthetics were applied in architecture, including that inside the RMS Titanic

We'll be working in a lot of history and facts alongside the art to help with inspiration! Art Nouveau emerged from a movement of using the logic of nature in visual and functional art. It was predominant from about 1883-1914, a period we know as the Belle Époque.

The distinguishing characteristic of Art Nouveau is its undulating asymmetrical line, often taking the form of flower stalks and buds, vine tendrils, insect wings, and other delicate and sinuous natural objects; the line may be elegant and graceful or infused with a powerfully rhythmic and whiplike force.
Guidelines:
-Visual: show your Wol/OC/NPC alt wearing something inspired by the theme and/or gpose them by recreating an art piece from the art style.
-Writing: write a fic based on your muse attending the gala.
-Feel free to be as creative as you want.
-Any form of media welcome.
