The biggest barrier of entry for creative spaces beforehand was giving a shit about making stuff. Thank god AI has removed this hurdle so now ppl who don’t care about anything can clutter these spaces up

That's why I like pixel art in general; it cuts out the need for fine motor skills and just leaves art theory. I can't draw or write by hand anymore, and I find drawing with tablets unfortunately has the exact same issues. Forever doing art with a mouse, I guess...

Not being able to traditionally draw as an artist has messed with my brain bad.. I'm constantly thinking "I wish I could make art. Like, good art like that." when scrolling on here, completely forgetting that I do alright in my own way. Cut out the need for fine detail skills (disability), and yeah.

I reckon Damian McCarthy would be a better choice, though. Same producer as Hokum (and RE) has taken on the SH reboot, so here's hoping.

Also, Acerola did a great video about why it will all collapse in on itself. It made me angry, but also hopeful, I guess?

Random internet person here who also had a recent AI existential crisis. Someone helped me by pointing out: posts talking about the "mind blowing" results of each new model are a part of their shady marketing practices. Remember, the one thing AI is good at is lying! Same for tech companies. $$$

If you need help with workflow stuff and we can line up times (I'm Aus, +10:00), happy to body double via discord or something and give pointers. I've been working with a low poly pixel art textured style for 6 years, and props take me 2-6 hrs from start to fully textured. No need for pay.

Here's some of my terrible sprites if people want to see them. I needed things like two expressions and characters to swap between, and my scribbling just became more unhinged as I got into enjoying the process of not caring how they looked. Bad art is character building and freeing.

I needed placeholder art while coding my own visual novel plugin for Godot, so I spent a couple hours scribbling sprites. A few weeks later and these abominations have grown on me. Why do people still make excuses for using slopmachine placeholder art?! I can't draw for shit, but this was fun to do.
A rework of the "just make it exist first" meme, but with only the "exist" image and the text "Just Make It*" and "*like you actually fuckdamn MAKE it" beneath. The screenshot at the bottom is of a scene laid out like a visual novel, but with terribly drawn characters and background art.

Still thinking about Camp Miasma... Speaking of teenagers, I haven't posted here for so damn long because my country decided it wants everyone to prove they're over 16 to use social media, and fuck uploading my licence to some random site. I hate this future so much... (Photo: me, The Pit 2016)

I sent my novel pdf to the artist I'm working with via gmail, and google thought it would be great to have their ai read it and send me a plot summary/analysis that I never agreed to. Seeming my story is a reaction to the rise of AI psychosis, it felt apt, but also deeply violating and gross...

Was coming here to say this! KIRA has been my favourite dev for a while, and everything they do may be super niche, but always interesting. Also see Lunacid, a King's Field-like (Hard 1st Person Fantasy RPG) that is genuinely scary at times.

This! Complaints about "style over substance" in movies, especially those that commit to being weird, makes me feel like people have forgotten that film is a varied artform and doesn't need to be engaging only in a conventional story way. If its purpose is just vibes, then watch it for the vibes.

Never understood the hate for found footage horror.. Maybe it comes from the intrinsic high bar for realism, but by focusing on that people miss out on how impressively experimental it can be. Also, I'm obsessed with the aesthetics. Anyway, here's a call to watch Fake Documentary Q! #darkart #horror

The good thing about having a huge back catalogue of old photo work is that you can cheat when making "new" art. Here's the neon soaked photos (2015) I used to make the artwork on my "MurderBike" arcade machine. I guess it's not really cheating if their my photos tho. #gamedev #blender #newretrowave

I've seen a surprising number of found footage films (3) about forgotten leech gods whispering to serial killers in the past week, completely by accident. I guess that's a thing. Anyway, here's an unrelated photo of mine, "Co-morbidity" (2017) #horror #darkartist #occult #photography #foundfootage

With Tormented Souls reminding me why I love Survival Horror (horror + puzzles + retro aesthetics), I decided to make a list of everything I didn't own yet and start buying and playing through 2 games a month. So far, I have played through the first 3 games. #survivalhorror #psxhorror #horrorgames

Heartworm

Crow Country

What is visible of the rest of the list (trust me, there's a loooot on the full list):
Slitterhead

White Knuckle
The Tartarus Key

My weirdo pixel art textured snack products made for a vending machine model. I realised that there were so many details people likely wouldn't see. Unless... I could make them interactable objects that are actually dispensed. Hmm... #lowpoly #blender #aseprite #pixelart #gamedev #indiegames

I just figure at some point I'll have made a big enough catalogue of objects jumping between all my projects that it'll end up being enough to build a shopping mall, but that’s kind of the problem. I have to make things easy for myself, but I'm constantly making design decisions that complicate it!
110
Bryn DC @feverdreamr.bsky.social · 29/08/2025
I love the aesthetic too! I've definitely been tempted to make a horror game set in an closed (overnight, rather than abandoned) shopping mall, but I'd need to get way faster at finishing models... Building a single store (a laundromat) is already taking sooo much damn time to finish.

Aww, that's really lovely to hear, thank you! It's taken me way too long to get to where I'm happy with this style (going on 4 years now?!), so it's great to find out when others like it and it's not just me.

Why hadn't I heard anything about this?! An all round solid post-apoc thriller, a genre that's pretty well trodden by now, but this does a hell of a lot with a little. Killer lead performance from Deadwyler. I'm just kinda confused why it didn't screen anywhere...

I wasn't going to post more until the full scene was done, but I need something that’s not people bombarding me, ehhh... My effort yesterday - those tiny labels had me tempted to increase pixel density, but I'm glad I stuck with it (1px per cm) #gamedev #blender #pixelart #retrohorror #indiegaming

Continuing to try to speed up my asset process, this took 2hrs 25min, but a coin machine is a much simpler model than a dryer. I'm curious how long the average object takes other 3D artists from start to finish? Because these speeds are still hard for me. #gamedev #blender #retrogaming #psxhorror

Yeah, my process was definitely sped up by making mistakes early on and taking the time to figure out how to do things better, so I guess the time invested in being slow and methodical at first does pay off eventually!

Being the only 3D artist at my day job, while also having come from an unrelated field (photography), means I have no idea how long it takes the average artist to do this kind of work. It felt quick, but I noted a bunch of areas for improvement, especially with unwrapping taking me 2.5hrs...
120
Bryn DC @feverdreamr.bsky.social · 10/08/2025
Thinking about scope and how small tasks blow out into huge time sinks - I started timing myself and how long an asset currently takes me. This was 5.5hrs from start to end. That's a dayish per asset. 900x is just under 3 years. Realistically, I need to get down to 2hrs per asset. #gamedev #blender
