@lauralexx.bsky.social is on at the Lemon Tree tonight and I'm gutted that I'm going to miss the show (because Reasons). I caught a preview at the Fringe and loved it.

I caught @pierrenovellie.bsky.social's afternoon show. Which was brilliant but there was a point where he asked what a vitamin is...and I desperately wanted to put my hand up and explain not only what they are but also the etymology of the word.

So I've just raced from Waverley station to get to a show with 5 minutes to spare. Only to find that I'm three days early. So I've an hour spare. Going to charge up my phone and try to find some coffee instead.

Anyway I saw Felicity Ward and Rachel Fairburn yesterday who were both excellent.

For what can only be described as reasons I'm wearing two watches. One of which turns out is broken (but crucially not stopped). So we we now have situation where one watch tells the always truth and the other lies. For some reason this feels very on brand for me.

Last day at the #Edfringe at least for the time being. I bought a bunch of tickets in advance so hopefully today may be a little less chaotic. It's been a few years since my last Fringe but it seems less busy this year. But the prices seem to have hiked up.

Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette. I bought it before I owned a CD player...because of the secret tack. My sister pinched it from me (I've since replaced it)

So, I saw this and wondered if @oldenoughtosay.com would be interested. There's no haunted masks, dolls or dungeon...that I can see. But there's a definite choice been made with the on suite. (I am kinda drawn to the bookcase space though)

OK, I want to have a bit of a rant... But it's work related so here's some pictures of my lilies instead.
the picture is of a cluster of Asiatic lily flowers. They are a deep red colour and are lit by bright sun light. six of the flowers are open and another four are still buds. I'm particularly pleased with them this year and this is the best they've ever been.
Also in the picture are nasturtiums but these have yet to flower.
In the top left corner is a lupin leaf. And frankly it's looking a bit sad this year.the picture is of a cluster of Asiatic lily flowers. This image is similar to the first but showing a wider angle revealing more of my untidy planter and showing more of the nasturtiums and another cluster of yellow lily buds.

Well that's another trip around the sun completed. I'm a little thicker around the middle, a little greyer on top and a little more frayed around the edges. And so far no-one's realised I'm actually just four well intentioned Pine Martens in a big coat.

Unscientifically (I stuck in a ruler) the snow in Aberdeen City is around 10 inches (25cm) deep.
Picture is of a steel ruler pushed into a field of lying snow up to around the 10 inch mark. I've used imperial measurements because I have to unfold the ruler to show cm. If the snow gets any deeper it may come to that.

So I hope that, in the coming year, we remember to each other and ourselves and to be kind especially when we don’t need to. I hope the people I care about know just how much and I, really, hope there are more hugs and laugher to come in 2026. Happy New Year!
Picture is on a bearded Lego figure wearing a cable knit sweater sitting in a blue armchair in front of a Lego book case. The figure is holding a white tea cup in his right hand and there is a book on a table to his right.
Wishing everyone a very Happy New Year!

I’d like to wish everyone a Happy Hogmanay and a peaceful and prosperous New Year. The last few years have been, euphemistically, challenging to say the least. But a New Year is an opportunity for healing and renewal.

Wishing everyone the merriest of Christmases.
The image shows a LEGO diorama of Santa Clause sitting in an arm chair in front of a fireplace. He is holding a yellow mug and there are cookies on a table in front of him. A second figure is standing to the right of him he has a beard, glasses and shot messy brown hair and has a cable knit sweater print on his torso (he looks suspiciously like me). He is holding a red mug. To the far right of the diorama is a small LEGO Christmas Tree.
Merry Christmas.

I'm struggling a bit with #TheWarBetweenTheLandandtheSea. Russell Tovey is brilliant at playing a slightly bewildered everyman. But some of the dialogue has been quite clunky and the 'Homo Aqua' thing just upsets me. It's like nails on a blackboard every time I hear it.

We have Waxwings visiting Aberdeen again this year. I was lucky enough to catch them when the light was good and managed to take a few shots that I'm really pleased by. #nature #wildlife #bird #waxwing #ShareMondays2025 #fsprintmonday

I'd managed to get some shots of the Waxwings in Aberdeen yesterday. However the light wasn't great and I thought I could do better. I was up and out early enough to catch them in the morning light and I'm much happier with the results.

This came up on my FB memories this morning. To be honest I'm cringing, slightly, at the tautology of 'earlier' with 'forerunner' but I do really like a classic phone box. And you almost never see a K2 outside London.
The picture is of a screen grab of a FaceBook memory from six years ago. The accompanying text reads:
"K2 phone box outside the Natural History Museum and the V&A.
The K2 was an earlier (and larger) forerunner to the iconic K6 phone box.
Designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott it was introduced in 1926.
The design of the domed top was inspired by the mausoleum of Sir John Soane."

The K2 phone box is larger than the classic K6 box, has slightly more design work and has a pierced crown emblem instead of the moulded crown found on the K6.

Thank you. The two parts of the course that I'd skipped were on predictive algorithms and data forecasting. Which I think would have been the most interesting and possibly the most useful. I need to find the time to go back and try the tutorials.

Andy @fetch13.bsky.social · 07/11/2025
That is a good question. I look after a data historian, I'm increasingly being asked more data sciencie questions. At the very least it's helpful to be using the same terms as the data scientists. But finding the time to study was really difficult. So yes, but I'm not sure I can carve out the time.

I sometimes think with AI LLMs what we've actually managed to produce is Douglas Adams 'Electric Monk' as they may not give you the correct answer but will give you what you want to hear.

Hey there, how's it going? A while back (June maybe?) I started a short course at a local University. And what with one thing and another (mostly work) I fell behind. So I spent a week in August, that I should have been at the #EdFringe, finishing the course and getting in my final report.

It's not in the same league, but Aberdeen University had a number of stock rejections of which "a short list has been drawn up. Your name was not included" seemed particularly blunt.

The Fourth will be with you. Always. Happy Star Wars Day. #MayThe4thBeWithYou #StarWarsDay #MayThe4th #Lego
The picture shows Lego Minifigures duelling of Darth Maul and Qui-Gon Jinn on a mossy rock.
Darth Maul is hooded with a single red bladed light sabre. Qui-Gon is wielding a light sabre with green blade.
Both figures are from the 7101 Lightsaber Duel set (so Qui-Gon has the classic Lego yellow colouring).
Happy Star Wars Day and May the Fourth Be With You.

I've upgraded my gear and took my new lens out for to see if I could spot some Short Eared Owls. (I didn't) However I did have a chance encounter with a fox who'd popped their head up to see what I was doing while they were stretching in afternoon sun #ShareMondays2025 #FSprintmonday #FoxOfTheDay
Photograph of the head and neck of a fox surrounded by scrub and gorse bushes. Small yellow flowers can be seen on the gorse.
The picture was taken in the afternoon sun and the there is a warm tone to the picture.
I'd gone looking for short eared owls which have been overwintering in a local nature reserve. I didn't see any.
I'd decided to move on to try my luck elsewhere and as I was making my way a foxy head popped up and looked at me, unconcerned, enjoying the winter sun and I managed to take a few shots.

That said my Grannie knitted me a woollen vest when I was wee that was like armour. It was so sturdy it could stand up on it's own.

Andy @fetch13.bsky.social · 15/01/2025
Scotland. I'd say a vest was a light top undergarment either sleeveless or short sleeved worn to add an extra layer for warmth or just to stop your short buttons rubbing against your skin. Usually made of a light fabric like cotton.

I read somewhere that Moffat tends to give The Doctor's Companions definitive endings because he wants a reason why The Doctor never visits them once they've left. But what if The Doctor just has really poor Object Permanence?
