For #FerdigardWeekend Day 3, I wrote a snippet of an Azure Gleam AU in which Ferdinand saves Edelgard and thinks about getting revenge on his father because I think he should get to commit patricide in more than one timeline ❤️🧡

It wouldn't be inaccurate to describe Edelgard as childlike in her current state, but it doesn't quite convey the gravity of the situation. She recognized Ferdinand when he found her, but she could not remember what happened before that. Her body is alarmingly weak, her limbs heavy in Ferdinand's arms as he carries her.

His heart is hammering through his chest so strongly he wonders if Edelgard can feel it. He has felt the rush of adrenaline on the battlefield more times than he can count, but this is quite different. This time he is responsible for fighting not only for himself, but Edelgard if an enemy happens to catch them. He cares not if he is injured in the process, but he can't bare to think of Edelgard suffering any more. Not after all she has endured.

Besides anxiety, Ferdinand feels an extraordinary amount of anger. Towards the Kingdom for abandoning her at her most vulnerable, at his father for lying to him about Edelgard's condition so he could take power for himself, at himself for not preventing her from being kidnapped.

For a moment he wonders if he will need to tell Edelgard the events that transpired in order to help her regain her memories. He wonders if he even should. But he realizes he is getting ahead of himself. First and foremost, he needs to take carry her to safety.

Ferdinand is relieved to run out of the tunnel he escaped from into a dense forest. The trees would provide a temporary safe haven as they rest. He would run to the edges of Fódlan to if his body allowed him, but he knew pushing himself too hard would be a disservice to them both.

He slumps against a sturdy tree onto the ground, his grip still tight on Edelgard. He looks down to see her eyes are closed and panics until he sees the steady rise and fall of her chest, ensuring him she is breathing.

He is glad she is sound asleep. He can't fathom what happened to make her a shell of her former self. Perhaps he is better off not knowing. In any case, he is sure she needs the rest. He allows the weight of her body to rest on his lap, relaxing his grip but still supporting her head.

It seems silly, but Ferdinand likes to imagine himself as the hero of an opera he saw as a child, the one who saves the princess from the villains and carries her across the mountains to safety. Not that he thinks of Edelgard as some princess in distress, even if she is not currently capable of fending for herself.

The opera, as he recalls it, had a predictable happy ending with the hero marrying the princess. Part of him wonders hopes, even-this may be his future with Edelgard, but there is much to do beforehand. He doesn't know how he will do it, but he will dedicate his life to keeping her alive, whatever that may mean for the Empire.

And he will exact revenge upon his traitorous father, even if that means him dying by his hand.

Ferdinand stands while pressing his palms into his desk, wishing he was pressing against her body instead. But he wanted to try to have some semblance of self-control, even if only momentarily.

For #FerdigardWeekend Day 2, I wrote about Edelgard’s thoughts and feelings about Ferdinand before she declares war on the church ❤️🧡

The declaration of war upon the Church of Seiros is imminent. Edelgard has been planning this moment for seemingly forever, has every word she plans to say memorized, yet all the preparation cannot fully quell the anxiety within her. Perhaps what worries her the most is what her friends will decide to do. Will they understand her vision and fight by her side? Will they support the church and end up across the battlefield in the future?

Hubert, of course, will stay by her side, but she is less certain about the rest of the Black Eagles. Dorothea's justified disdain for the nobility means she is likely to support her cause. Petra may feel conflicted about joining her side given her country's tense relationship with the Empire, but Edelgard thinks-hopes-she may be able to reason with her. Caspar, Linhardt, and Bernadetta would likely side with her if only because of their families.

And then there is Ferdinand, another noble who is likely to side with her out of duty to his house, but perhaps the one Edelgard is most worried about. One of her first decrees as emperor will be to strip his father of his title, which will surely upset Ferdinand regardless of the side he chooses. She can't let any more people continue to suffer under the duke's rule.

Should she tell him about her plans beforehand? Tell him how much pain his father has caused not just her and her family, but so many other innocent people? He seems to have a strong enough sense of justice that his father's actions would anger him, but he is still his father. Would he even believe everything she tells him?

Ferdinand always seems to think he is behind her, trying to catch up, but Edelgard never saw it that way. He is and always has been equal to her, to all their classmates, irrespective of noble status. She is realizing that perhaps the best course of action is to let him realize this himself in time.

Would it be too sappy, too vulnerable to say she wants him to walk this path beside her? Mostly likely. More importantly, it's too risky should he decide to go against her. So she will keep her thoughts to herself. She's had a lot of practice with that, so this should be no more difficult than keeping any other secrets.

What she doesn't expect is how difficult Ferdinand makes it to keep her plans a secret. Every time they are so much as in the same room, she feels something heavy, some combination of emotions she cannot name. Something she has never telt about any other person before.

"Does something trouble you, Edelgard?" Ferdinand asks one day when they are having a meal in the dining hall.

She has never seen him regard her with such genuine concern. Perhaps he is not as oblivious as he seems at times.

Edelgard forces a smile, trying not to think about how this may be the last meal they share as allies. "No, Ferdinand, but I appreciate your concern."

She expects him to say something about how it is truly noble to care about the well-being of one's friends or something to that effect, but he doesn't. Instead there is a heavy beat of silence as she feels rather than sees his eyes bore into her.

"If you are certain," he finally says. When she finally makes eye contact with him, she notices how his eyes shine brightly like sunstones. "I am willing to listen should you need to talk."

Edelgard is certain of many things, but her feelings towards Ferdinand are not one of them. All she can do is thank him and hope for the best. For herself, for the Empire, and even for him.

There is, shockingly, (and Hubert would drop dead if he heard this), merit to what Ferdinand is proposing. Sometimes the best way to learn is to go up against someone, especially when said someone is a person that gets on your nerves. To learn a number of weapons stands to benefit her in the long run. If Ferdinand, for whatever reason, decides to side with her in the future then it also benefits him to learn. And if he goes against her then she can learn all his weaknesses and strengths by training against him.

If there is something she can count on Ferdinand it is his fierce determination. When she is better or improving then he will sprint to catch up to her. No matter how many times he falls he gets back up. He can be utterly humiliated and his moxie will not falter. Such determination then pushes her to always be at a high level. And in the world she wishes to create such people, irrespective of background, gender, and so forth, will be rewarded for their drive.

For #FerdigardWeekend Day 1, I wrote a joyful moment between Edelgard, Ferdinand, and their daughter ❤️🧡

Ferdinand would have once described himself as a proud noble, the proud son of House Aegir. But such pride feels meaningless compared to pride he feels now. Not just of himself, not just of being a successful war general and Adrestia's prime minister, but of himself as a husband to Edelgard and father to their young daughter Clara.

He sits across the room from Edelgard and Clara, polishing pieces or armor-fortunately not out of necessity as he once did, but as a ritual, something to keep his hands busy. As Edelgard, Ferdinand, and their confidants work to identify successors based on merit, Edelgard has seemed to allow herself to relax more. She began to resume activities she once enjoyed but abandoned during the war and post-war reform efforts. They make time for attending opera performances and taking leisurely strolls through the gardens.

One such activity is painting, which Edelgard now enjoys even more with their daughter. Clara excitedly presses her small fingers into different colors of paint and stamps them onto the paper in front of her. Her fingerprints form something that resembles a very colorful flower. Ferdinand can't wait to compile all of her childhood artwork into an album and show her when she is older.

"Well done Clara!" Ferdinand praises, setting down his gauntlet to clap his hands together.

"Thanks Papa," she says. Her sweet voice and bright smile melt his heart.

Edelgard feigns a look of offense. "What about me?"

"I cannot see your painting from this angle, my love," he says, staring at the back of the blank canvas on her easel. Edelgard has always been self-conscious of letting others see her paintings, especially when they are in progress, but she has gradually let him steal more glances. "But I have no doubt it is as stunning as you are."

Edelgard softly smiles in response. He notices how much Clara's facial features, framed by amber waves similar to his own hair, resemble her mother's. He thinks of how much more beautiful Clara will become as she grows older. "You should join us."

Ferdinand finds himself stunned by the invitation. "I have always considered myself to be more of an appreciator of the arts than an artist. I am content simply observing you two."

"Are you worried that your painting will not live up to your noble standards?" she says playfully.

Ferdinand huffs. Even as married parents, she refuses to stop teasing him, not that he truly minds these days. "Not at all! I—“

"Then come here. You know as well as I that our days of tending to weapons and armor are over. Besides, were you not the one to tell me I should simply enjoy the process without worrying about the final product?"

Ferdinand has no rebuttal for that. Edelgard is always capable of making a convincing argument, even with minute matters like this.

"Very well." Ferdinand sets down the greave he was polishing to sit on the floor beside Clara. Her lilac eyes twinkle in delight as he dips a brush into a pool of paint. After a moment of not knowing what to do next, he abandons the paintbrush and allows Clara to guide his hands from the paint to the paper.

From the corner of his eye, he catches Edelgard stealing glances of them, her gaze filled with fondness. He knows they both have realized that the most meaningful pride and joy present itself in precious moments such as these.

But no one is immune to emotion, not even the Emperor herself. He would not throw it in her face, though. He thought that she needed to cry. One tear turned into many, and she buried her shoulder in his arm.

They arrive at her tent. There at the entrance she comes to a halt and looks over to him with an austere expression. “That will be all, Ferdinand.”

Usually he would respect her desire to be alone. But he can’t in good conscience leave her believing that she can’t be human around someone and that she can’t turn to people. “I will not leave you utterly exhausted and without a friend.”

White brows shoot up at his boldness. Something glints in her usually stern eyes, the human side she desperately tries to push down when being emperor. It pains him to see that despite serving her for two years, and despite the Black Eagles and others having chosen to walk this path with her, she is still unused to the idea of turning to someone. Sometimes he gets the impression that she sees herself as nothing but a living weapon; why would anyone become attached to such an object?

The stern expression to cross her would make many change their minds or back off, but he stands firm. “You needn’t concern yourself with me.”

“You will not brush me aside so easily,” he insists with his eyes matching her sharpness. “You are not the only one who can be stubborn.”

ferdinand coming to terms with his new title as trophy husband <3

It had been… a little stifling, learning about the security threats from Edelgard’s shadowy enemies and then being told that it would be others who would fight against them. His lance hand ached to be out in the field, helping wherever he could. But his wife disagreed. She said his skills would be better put to use here in the capital.
He was of mixed feelings about it all. He did not want to be treated like a delicate flower, unable to contribute to being anything but Emperor Edelgard’s beautiful trophy husband. It was shameful, sitting here while Hubert and Dorothea were out fighting their battles for them. He was not a porcelain doll! He had kept his fitness exquisitely since the war, training with both Edelgard herself and the other soldiers.
On the other hand, being able to dress in such fine fabrics and rich colors without worrying about them being dirtied with mud was quite the luxury, and of course the opera was opulent and gorgeous, just the way he remembered it before the war. Even if the story of the opera was not to his taste, he still loved the music and the costumes.
