It's because due to how unique the cartridge is, not many people actually are capable of making repros of it. As a result, what's out there tends to fetch a heavy price. Their were some available on Aliexpress a couple years ago, but they were $120 and possibly made with 3.3v logic.

It's just extra needless expense, that only creates headaches for the retro community. In trying to protect your work, you punish legitimate people who just wanted to play your game on real hardware. Which is honestly kind of funny to think about, coming from an unauthorized port of a namco AC game.

Even if you don't go as hard on the copy protection, it wouldn't matter anyways, because anything that can be flashed on a modern Genesis flashboard can still be reproduced by Aliexpress sellers. Even if you were to go the custom mapper route, they can STILL reverse engineering it. See Pier Solar.

Paprium is copy protected to hell and back, because the guy who runs Watermelon is an egotistical prick that REALLY hates emulation and people who use it. And now look at it, hundreds of unfulfilled orders and it took years to make it PLAYABLE on the MED Pro. Yeah, not 100% accurate. Playable.

Which then leads to the third and final thing I want to talk about, and that's adding copy protection to prevent Aliexpress repros. I am largely against this. Because the biggest problem with copy protection games is that they also set off on flash cartridges like the Everdrives.

My only concern is given their affiliation with Nintendo, Namco could also take the Nintendo approach and DMCA the project. At this point in time, you just never know what these companies on, whether or not they're going to strike down fan projects.

As far as getting official support for the game? I'm kind of mixed about that because while Namco has shown their willingness to work with fans in the past. For example, Pac-Man Championship Edition (found in the Namcot Collection for Switch) was a fan project that got officially endorsed by Namco.

So to start things off, I totally understand the need to protect your work. It absolutely sucks when you put all your time, effort, and sometimes money, into a passion project. Only for someone to come along and profit off your work. It's a slap to the face, especially when you just wanted to share.

I should also mention that we do not have any legal precedent protecting recomps or decomps, in general. Our protections for CLEAN ROOM reverse engineering is only for hardware. Software does not have such protections. These AI recomps are going to screw all that up, if companies begin to sue.

TL;DR it's basically recompiling game data back to usable source code for porting. When it's done legally, you rebuild it entirely from scratch (BY HUMANS). When it's done illegally, people use pre-existing or stolen source code to build it. AI Recomps do not have such distinctions.
