Good question. Both Zuko and Katara are asking themselves questions about what their role is now and who they are going to be going forward this season. The blue spirit and painted lady are both alter egos, versions of themselves that are independent from their forward facing identities that allow them to explore their identities. In finding that they defend the same people, they find their similarities and it complicates their conversation in 207 and platforms what happens in season 3. They actually tie together very well thematically.

Thanks for this! It means a lot coming from you. I definitely respect Zutara AND Kataang shippers both and wanted to make sure people enjoy the ride. I can also say that if i didn't think the blue spirit and painted lady team up this season didn't make sense thematically and with both of their character journeys, i would never have supported putting it in the show. Zuko and Katara have lots of chemistry in the animated series because they have so much conflict and I have to imagine it was intentional on the part of the OG writers to create that chemistry.

Some people in this fandom will try to convince you the genre restricts itself in terms of romantic depth. THAT IS MEDIA ILLITERACY. Just because Bryan and Mike made some hamfisted trope moments and forced “blushing” or interactions, that does not equal “good” romance.

Princess Mononoke is a great example of action-adventure historical fantasy animation with East Asian mythological influences in which we see a nuanced, thematic, tension-and-chemistry-filled romance that still allows for the story not to be defined as a “romance.” It’s not about GENRE. #atla

Same w/Katara and Aang. He forces a kiss on her TWICE when she doesn’t want it, and there is NO conversation between them. It’s so bizarre to set up conflict and never have the conversation and resolution. They just wave it away like it never happened. Not to mention neither romance “says” anything

Ex: Mai and Zuko argue about their personality differences and the next thing we see is her call him a traitor to their country. That isn’t resolved. We get a corny “I love Zuko more than I fear you” line that weighs nothing and he does not hear. She doesn’t “believe” in Zuko. She just “likes” him.

From a character development standpoint only Sokka/Suki make sense since Sokka successfully gains clarity on his development. Katara/Aang and Zuko/Mai are both woefully devoid of purpose and impact on char development, and neither actually successfully resolve the set up of conflict. #atla

A frustrating thing re: ATLA fandom is confusing “something making sense” in the story - ie: “logical” writing - vs being able to critique it anyway. Romance being “set up” =/= beyond critique. From a feminist theoretical lens, none of the ATLA romances pass the test. #atla #avatarthelastairbender
