According to the two teachers I was hanging out with this week (my brother, who teaches 7th grade science in Illinois, and my cousin-in-law, who teaches high school art in Ohio), yes, indeed we very much do.

My sweet baby girl now tips the scales at 145 lbs and vet says it’s a good weight but adds that we should keep her there. She’s gained 34 lb in a year. Much of it muscle. Powerful girl.

To put this in perspective chestnut trees used to be dominant species in the United States. Billions of trees were killed by fungal blight and now fully grown America chestnuts are functionally extinct. There is no getting them back. Ever. All for a data center. www.gadgetreview.com/one-of-ameri...

One of America’s Last Chestnut Groves Is About to Be Destroyed for a Data Center
A rare 200-tree American chestnut grove in West Virginia may be cleared for data-center development, but the project denies the site is on its land.

It speaks volumes about the reporter’s skill that she used that short vignette to give her readers a very strong sense of just how big a self-centered jerk he is.

Um. Not a lawyer but… if you’re in the food business and your products “put a few kids in the hospital” and you publicly acknowledge that fact with those exact words… isn’t that something that leaves you open to (successful) class action lawsuit?

The ceremony for my uncle at Arlington National Cemetery was beautiful. Beautiful day, beautiful ceremony, beautiful family and friends gathered. I am glad I went. And a bald eagle flew over the cemetery before the ceremony. Feathery bastards are stalking me.

My husband is the master carpenter and paid special attention to ADA compliance. Which is why my home has both stairs and a ramp in the garage. I learned a lot from him.

Anyway, the “closet” also has an iron in a holder affixed to the wall. It does not, however, have an ironing board, which accounts for the iron shaped scorch mark on the carpet beneath the iron’s holder. Again, lots of wasted space in that closet corner.

When I arrived, there was a cricket on the wall above the safe, I did look carefully and made sure it was not a cockroach, but it was definitely a cricket. I took this as an omen of good luck. But the cricket is gone now.

And then let’s talk about the closet. There isn’t one. There is a bar with three hangers on it. Underneath that bar is what appears to be a safe. Something you could’ve actually put somewhere else in the room so that that people could hang their clothes without the safe being in the way.

Even my brother, normally not the most design sensitive person on the planet, commented “lousy feng shui” as he navigated the space between the bed and the wall in his identical room next to mine.

Elizabeth No War or ICE @fenbeast.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
I will also point out that that wasted 4 ft.² in the bathroom could have been put to good use adding more space for someone to walk between the second bed and the wall. Because there is approximately 12 inches between the foot of the second bed and the wall of the bathroom. It’s a real squeeze.

And the reason I did not see it before was because it was tucked away behind the shower curtain. You can’t see it, and you can’t use it, but it’s there, dropped in as an afterthought. I find that a lot less charming than the rest of the room’s dysfunction.

Elizabeth No War or ICE @fenbeast.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Addendum: I was wrong about there being no grabs. There’s exactly one grab bar. It’s located at the back of the shower, far from where one would step into it, and right next to the toilet, but not where one would grab it in order to stand up from the toilet. It serves absolutely no useful purpose.

When I first saw the room, I was a little disappointed, if not horrified, but I’ve come to realize that there’s something almost magnificent about the utter failure to achieve what one would normally expect in a mid range hotel. Plus I gotta say the mattress was incredibly comfortable.

They have a microwave on the bureau next to the fridge, which suggest people spend enough time here to actually eat meals in this place. I wouldn’t recommend.

Well, OK, I’m already started on the decor. We’ve got your 70s earth tones as a theme, but everything is ever so slightly off in terms of color family. And they just randomly selected different patterns that have no consistency whatsoever.

Elizabeth No War or ICE @fenbeast.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
I mean, I could very well go on with my critique of how this room was laid out and why it is not ideal for human habitation, but you get the point. There are all sorts of nicking, little inaccuracies, and weird decisions that went into how it’s laid out. I mean, don’t get me started on the decor.

Elizabeth No War or ICE @fenbeast.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
That hypothesis is also supported by the fact that the two identical paintings above the two identical beds were not hung the same height. There is at least an inch of difference in the distance between the top of each frame and the ceiling.

Elizabeth No War or ICE @fenbeast.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Oh, and: the toilet is not straight. They installed it at a slight angle. Why is anyone’s guess, but given that the mirror in the living space is also askew, and was affixed to the wall that way (you can’t straighten it, I tried), it’s likely whoever slapped this room together, eyeballed everything.

Elizabeth No War or ICE @fenbeast.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
On a more serious note, there is absolutely nothing in the way of grab bars or supports in this bathroom. Not in the tub/shower, not near the toilet. If you are an older person, or someone with vertigo, as I am, or someone who just needs additional balance aids, you’re on your own.

The bathroom trashcan is in the alcove outside the room where the shower and the toilet is. This immediately tells me that the room accessories were chosen & placed by a man. If a woman had done it, there would be a trashcan next to the toilet. With a lid, ideally.

Elizabeth No War or ICE @fenbeast.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
The towel rack meanwhile is on the wall directly above the toilet toilet. Fine, close to the shower, I guess that makes sense. At least it does if your guest is short. If your guest is tall, and they stand up from the excessively low toilet, they’re in for a nasty surprise.
100
Elizabeth No War or ICE @fenbeast.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
And one would imagine, if designing for human use, that it might be appropriate to place the toilet paper roll with an easy reach of the toilet within that 4 sqft. And yet it was placed as far as possible from the toilet so that someone sitting on the toilet must lean over to grab the toilet paper.
100
Elizabeth No War or ICE @fenbeast.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Because there is a good 24 inches or more between the right side of the toilet as you face it and the wall. Ample space you have moved the toilet over so that it wasn’t directly in front of the door and so that one could clean around it. But no. Four empty square feet is what was desired.

Elizabeth No War or ICE @fenbeast.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
The tub is crammed into a corner, expected. The toilet, directly in front of the door, is jammed next to the tub. There is zero space between the tub and the toilet. Aside from the nagging question of how one cleans around the toilet… why?
100
Elizabeth No War or ICE @fenbeast.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
There is a sink in a doorless alcove with a door next to it. Pretty standard. Inside the room beyond the door is a tub and a toilet. Also standard. It’s the positioning that gets things weird.

The hotel room I’m staying in is a master class in poor living space design. I mean, hotel rooms in generic hotels generally are intended to be utilitarian rather than comfortable, but this isn’t even that. Starting with the bathroom:

According to my husband, Romy is now completely integrated into our pack. We haven’t even had him three days yet. Even dang, who was terrified of him, has come around and is now his best friend. That is just mind blowing.

The icing on the cake was when I stood in front of the Capitol building chatting with a friend and a bald eagle flew by. Then either the same eagle came around again or its mate flew by as well. It was cool! But I didn’t have my phone out.

We determined that what she wanted was a photo of her standing in front of the ginormous totem pole in the museum, so I snapped two pics with her phone, one sufficiently large enough to capture the whole totem pole, and the second one close-up.

Then while I was in the Museum of the American Indian, a woman hesitantly approached me and said something of which I only understood “photo”; I took a chance and asked her in Spanish if she spoke Spanish, and her face just lit up.

My husband eats one of these every day with bananas & milk, but the mitigating factors are (1) he’s a farmer so eating hay seems reasonable to him and (2) high fiber/complex carbs provide excellent lasting blood glucose control for a T1 diabetic who hates eating during the day. A foodie he ain’t.

At very least, differentiate your candidate's known corruption from the allegations you're spreading about the guy you're trying to sink, right? Otherwise the calculation becomes, "Well, they're both on the take, BUT AT LEAST HE DIDN'T TAKE AN ANTI-ABORTION JUDGE'S WORD FOR IT." But you do you.
