Great @economist.com’a #Charlemagne this week in praise of the “dreaded European working group” 🇪🇺🔥 and a “power that prefers rule books to rockets” ⚖️ > 🚀 economist.com/europe/2026/...
Europe's indecisiveness has invited many a barb.
Scott Bessent, America's treasury secretary, recently quipped that the continent's only response to crises (in that case one caused by Mr Trump's bizarre obsession with invading Greenland) was to create
"the dreaded European working group". Ha ha; most of the time working groups produce better results than carrier groups. Confabbing, summit-holding and deliberating result in decisions that—when they are eventually taken —have some sort of logic and general buy-in. Can Mr Bessent say the same of his team! It is anybody's guess what America's tariff rates will be next Tuesday. Europe's can be divined a decade away.

Great one! I also liked this week‘s KAL cartoon in @theeconomistnews.bsky.social
Cartoon by KAL in The Economist Magazine showing Greenland surrounded by buoys with US flags and the sign „MINE“ on them. Oh, and here's the full slide 🇪🇺 "What has the EU ever done to support the algae sector?" 😉 #EU4Algae
Infographic with a lot of text and ornated by different algae representations showing "what has the EU ever done to support the algae sector". The European Commission adopted its EU Algae Initiative in 2022. It works with national authorities to create awareness, facilitate licensing and help the sector develop. It has invested more than 500 million euros into algae-related research over the past decade or so. It has set up the EU Algae Stakeholder Platform EU4Algae. It is working across different services to make sure the sector's challenges are addressed in a coherent way. And it raises awareness through consumer surveys, Euronews episodes or last week's second Algae Awareness Summit
