A group of 25 Fields Medalists, including myself, have made a joint declaration on Math and AI: mathandai.org . We welcome additional signatories. See also this article in the Economist announcing the declaration: www.economist.com/science-and-...

There are many things to dislike about the current situation: AI companies treating math problems as trophies for their frontier models, the necessity to read X (yuck!) to keep up with the latest developments, and researchers hastily publishing half-baked drafts to claim priority.

Just came across the participants' list of the first Meeting of the Society of Social and Welfare in 1992. Amazing lineup. Ken Arrow, 4 future Nobel winners (Maskin, Myerson, Harsanyi, Sen), Jackson, Kreps, Pattanaik, Peleg, Saari, Schmeidler, Young, Zhou, etc. www.scwsociety.org/IMG/pdf/list...

After seeing the ballots for Munich's municipal election, I feel bad for spending my energy on voting theory rather than doing something about this. One of three tasks: "Distribute up to 80 points on more than 1000 candidates (3 points max per candidate)"

Beyond the benefits, AI’s biggest negative externality is the paralyzing uncertainty it spreads, especially among young people. It’s very unclear what you need to do to be successful 10 years from now.

Interesting realization: Social choice theory, mechanism design, and theoretical computer science peaked in the 1970s and 1980s.

Most of my (few) interactions with LLMs end with me insulting the AI and telling it how stupid it is. I fear this may reduce my chances of survival when the takeover begins.

Every TV series I've watched has left me disappointed at the end of the first season due to unanswered questions and loose ends: 24, Prison Break, Westworld, Big Little Lies, Cobra Kai, Severance, Pluribus. I've never watched a second season. It seems I just prefer movies.

I can't stop thinking about this article. For the record, I am still impressed when undergrads get a single paper before grad school... 😅

What do people think about IJCAI's Primary Paper Initiative ($100 paper submission fee, first submission is free)? The proceeds will be "exclusively directed toward the support of the reviewing community".

Until 1982, there were 4 groups at FIFA World Cups. Having 12 groups is just ridiculous. Germany is facing Curaçao, the smallest nation ever to participate in a World Cup. They have a population of approximately 150,000, comparable to cities such as Heidelberg, Darmstadt, and Ingolstadt.

Great series of primers on democracy reform that specifically address problems in the US: the electoral college, private fundraising, gerrymandering, unavailability of vote-by-mail, first-past-the-post (plurality), etc. Don't miss the article about Condorcet voting. effectivegov.uchicago.edu/primers

AAAI 2026 has received more than 29k submissions. Peer-reviewing is completely broken for AI. It’s not only the well-documented issues, such as self-nominated PC members, mismatched referees, useless reports, fraudulent submissions, low-quality papers, etc.

Ironically, the biggest obstacle to broader adoption of LLMs seems to be their lack of reliability, a trait that is otherwise characteristic of computers. Like the worst of us, they just make up facts rather than admit they don’t know. I appreciate anyone who admits they don’t know something.

Really hard to tell April Fool's jokes from genuine news this year. US regrets that far-right extremist Marine Le Pen is convicted of fraud. Trump abandons money laundering law. Musk pays millions to Wisconsin voters. Innocent father from Maryland accidentally deported to El Salvador mega prison.

Happy to see that people in machine learning (ML) are drawing on results from social choice theory. Especially maximal lotteries (ML) are getting some attention because of their robustness against clones. I recently compiled a topical bibliography of my ML papers: www.cs.cit.tum.de/en/dss/brand...

youtu.be/jWJVMoe7OY0 The fact that all these people have been released from prison epitomizes the absurdity of our times. It was the largest criminal investigation in U.S. history, with some individuals receiving sentences of up to 22 years.

In other news, Trump announced he could forcefully turn Canada into the US’ 51st state, doesn't rule out military action to take control of Panama and Greenland, NATO partners need to pay 5% (rather than 2%), and threatens that "all hell will break out" in Middle East.

Best thing about the machine learning hype: academic spam can be identified much easier. Whenever a suspicious email contains DL, ML, or AI, it can be safely deleted.

Let p be the proportion of preference profiles that admit a Condorcet winner. If you fix the number of voters n and increase the number of alternatives m, one would expect that p decreases. Similarly, when fixing m and increasing n (by two). Both statements have been open since 1974!
