In 2002, < than 100 Iberian #lynx remained. Today there are 2,663, thanks to #conservation efforts (captive breeding, more native prey, improved connectivity, partnerships with landowners). Still, 4,500-6,000 lynx are needed for a secure future.

Was a puma in SF last night? >90% of 'puma' sightings are not actually pumas. Whether this was actually a puma isn't known. Pumas are elusive and prefer to avoid people. The animal disappeared last night and is confirmed to no longer be in the area. sfstandard.com/2026/09/06/s... #sanfrancisco

Mountain lions prefer to avoid people so encounters are quite rare. If you do see a lion while hiking- stay calm and do not approach. Give them a wide berth so they can go on their way. If they approach you, make noise and make yourself look big. Leash your pets. www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/arti...

Felidae uses conservation dogs in our Bhutan Wild Cat Health Project. Here, the dogs are trained to locate scat from wild felids across four of Bhutan’s protected areas. The scat is collected and analyzed for exposure to parasites and viruses like canine distemper virus and leptospirosis.

Mule deer change their behavior in order to avoid pumas, moving away from roadways and instead increasing their use of the forest. This shift to reduced urban-edge use, particularly around roads, has led to a 67% reduction in the chance of wildlife-vehicle collisions involving deer.
