The hsl(from …) syntax thankfully makes this obsolete. CSS written like that was a real pain to maintain!

I had this "problem" just last week. TS only allow property access for known properties, even when it's optional. In other words, even though `null?.a` is valid, TS is saying `null` doesn't have a known property `a`.

I’m okay with this. Classes for styling, IDs for behavior and tags for semantics. Mixing these concepts used to lead to bad code, like using the a semantically wrong element for its styles. I think decoupling is the right move.

`take` and `sample` are basically the same method, but the rest look good. I'd love for it to take any sequence, and not only arrays. For example, Object.entries() and Node.children are iterators. Sampling those look useful, but I have no idea how that could be implemented.

One of my favorite Brave features is that it swallows most cookie consent screens (which I doubt sites are honoring anyway)

Helping modernize a 15yo system that was running on python 2 until a month ago. It’s been a huge pain but gratifying at the same time.

@dylanbeatt.ie maybe I'm suffering from the Mandela effect, but haven't you posted a video somewhere about AI being good at programs but not products? I'm trying to help a fellow dev in an existential crisis, but I can't find it…

My dream is having browsers implement the line-height-step property. I have no idea how that would interact with the lh unit, though.

@bram.us I finished writing something about how color scheme switching should be a browser control just to discover you wrote the exact same thing in 2022. :P Any news about that since then?

That's awesome! I had no idea that existed. I went looking for ideas like this but googling it I could only find tutorial after tutorial (since they so necessary with the current solutions). Thanks for the pointer. :)

ERRATA: It should be "Let's make dark mode *switching* a browser-native feature." At least this proves I'm not AI. 😅

@nerdy.dev @syntax.fm @kevinpowell.co I'm sorry for the spam, but I just wrote a piece on why we should stop writing dark mode switches and I'd like to know your opinion (and maybe some help getting this to people who could act on it). bsky.app/profile/did:...

Dark mode toggles should be a per-site browser preference, just like zoom. Why are we still reinventing the wheel with JavaScript? Let's make dark mode a browser-native feature. bit.ly/dark-mode-is...

Just tangentially related, a margin-vertical/horizontal would be great too. Not necessary, just neat. :)

As much as I dislike Tailwind, I admit it has its uses, and generated code is one of them. In my experience, AIs are not that great with CSS, but Tailwind helps a little.

I'm mostly pointing out the unexpected behavior of background-position, but those are great! I'm saving them for future projects. Thanks! :)
020
Felds @felds.dev · 19/03/2025
Nope. That's a "problem" with linear-gradient too. I've made a very minimal example. Uncomment the background-position declarations to see that they have no effect: codepen.io/felds/pen/my... (I say "problem" because I could be having the wrong expectation)
100
Felds @felds.dev · 19/03/2025
Also, any idea why side-relative are not implemented for bg-pos-x and -y? That took me off guard, too.
100
Felds @felds.dev · 19/03/2025
You mean using a var to animate the stops? I was trying to use bg-pos to "slide" the existing gradient as an image, so a new gradient wasn't generated on every frame, but it doesn't move when the bg-size is 100%, even when using side-relative positions. I don't understand why it behaves like that.
100
Felds @felds.dev · 19/03/2025
I thought a little bit of animation wouldn't hurt codepen.io/felds/pen/zx... PS 1: replacing linear-gradient with repeating-linear-gradient crashes the tab PS 2: I just found out that animating gradients using background-position-x is surprisingly tricky!

Now that I'm thinking about it, it would be nice to have a selector for stuff between two siblings. That would not be easy to implement, though, based on the time we had to wait for :has…

Felds @felds.dev · 18/03/2025
You're doing good work with your suggestions. I'd love to have more control over gaps! :)
010
Felds @felds.dev · 18/03/2025
Last thing: This expression `@scope (h3) to (p)` means "Inside an h3 but outside a p", not "the siblings between h3 and p". I think having the same keywords to mean different (but close) things can create a lot of confusion.

If the top element has `gap-below: 10px` and the bottom el has `gap-above: 20px`, who wins? I like the margin semantics for that, but gaps act more like children of the container, not like margins, which act more like pseudoelements.
110
Felds @felds.dev · 18/03/2025
Just a minor nitpick: why not `gap-top`? I understand `gap-block-start`, but `gap-above`?

Mixins will be such a game changer for ergonomics. Some properties naturally *go together*. It makes so much more sense expressing that in CSS than having to scatter utility classes all over the place!

Felds @felds.dev · 14/03/2025
I still think dark mode is a little half baked. For example: we have a media query to detect dark mode, but we can never control that from JS. The only way to change that is by changing the mode on the device (making functions like lightdark useless).
010
Felds @felds.dev · 14/03/2025
CSS variables are huge! I love the fact that css variables act like signals, where their values are propagated on change. A lot of JS was written to do that, where in CSS it just works.

I know they are not that shiny, but CSS color and math functions (min, max, clamp, round, etc).

What I always end up doing is something like `@media (hover) and (width >= 1200px)`, since it covers iPads and Android tablets (this bug only happens on samsung phones). Funnily enough, Samsung tablets don't report hover even when used with an pen, which has hover and can generate mouseover events.

(4/4) Problem is: It looks like the tickets are stuck in a limbo and with no solution in sight. How could I get more involved with this issue and help getting this fixed? I'm passionate about progressive enhancement, and I'd really love to be able to use this in production.

(3/?) This is a know bug that affects a huge amount of phones since 2019. For comparison, Samsung + Xiaomi have more market share than Apple globally. Yet, @media(hover) is still being used on every demo under the sun and evangelized as the right solution. Honestly, I'd love if that was the case.
