I'm not a button collector per se, but this has always been one of my favorites. Found on the ground in my old hometown in the mid-80s.
A pinback button with a picture of Jim Baker and the words: Jerry Falwell Can Suck My Dick.

trump can make up the how but nothing is self-executing and the process by which something becomes a reality matters a great deal as to whether it is a reality

i am genuinely bewildered by people who say that the rise of white nationalism in the republican party is a response to the "woke left." like, did the woke left cause pat buchanan's 1992 presidential campaign? is the woke left why steve king had a long career in congress?

Kash Patel defends FBI’s new policy on bestiality at Senate hearing
Sen. John Kennedy grilled the FBI director about a recently revised policy that doesn’t automatically disqualify job applicants who have engaged in bestiality.

The progressive and liberal folks who I came up with have mostly stuck to their guns even today, after the pressures/compromises of raising families and earning a living. Outnumbered for sure, but I don't think that's anything specific to a generational timetable. (3)

terribly right-wing ever since I can remember, but we came up in an environment that was, if not quite as cultish as the Trumpers, pretty fucking insanely devoted to Ronnie and the whole flag-waving aesthetic. The '84 and '88 Olympics were hard to live through (as I recall the time anyway). (2)

I think there was also plenty of alternative-aesthetic adoption during the mid/late 60s (see Zappa's WOITFTM for contemporaneous critique). Also, plenty of (mild) self-criticism apparent in popular culture like 'The Big Chill' about "how we forgot our values"... My cohort certainly has been (1)

On the one hand I agree; on another, Reagan was elected by a whole fuckton of Boomers, Silents, and Greatest Gen (white) folks. I'm one of the first Xers and I didn't get to vote against him until '84. Most Boomers weren't Abbie Hoffman either...

'The United States' is not a specific patch of soil, it is a collection of communities under one constitution, bound by those self-evident truths. It can - and has - traveled. One of those self-evident truths is that someone *born into our midst* is, presumptively, one of us.

was talking about this with ganz on the podcast today, but among the many reasons that race science is obvious nonsense is the fact that it is a giant exercise in begging the question. not one person obsessed with "race science" thinks that it might prove "white" intellectual inferiority...

It was a pretty great space for a long while. Loved being able to interact with Hunter back when it started... When the Phil vs Everyone Else narrative became dominant it got stupid (in some parts). 9/11 and the Iraq war revealed so many jingo chuds...

I think it was Hunter who remarked that after the E72 tour the band "could have become anything" but they "decided to get big" (or something like that). I think Veneta was sort of the end of the beginning, for the band at least, not the counterculture writ large.

LAST WORDS FOR JERRY GARCIA By Robert Hunter Not the same thing as the more widely published Elegy, which is magnificent and worth your time to look up if you haven't seen it. From a privately published collection of Hunter's elegies and funeral poems for friends and family
Go naked in the world,
Wind for your cloak and coverlet.
Whom the Gods love best
they reward with early death,
gather them into the sun,
reflect them in moonlight,
crown them with comets,
anoint them with shooting stars

Go naked to the Throne of Stars,
go as the stars go,
arrayed in their own
incandescent light.

Go and our hearts go with you.
Return to the sourceof the soul
by way of the Sacred River,
royal road to the sea
where all shall be music
and dreams shall be dreams
no more, but visions
of the World's foundation
scattered among the stars.

Dust shall be dust
and the voice of dust
shall be music,
pleasing to God
who sent it forth
in search of melody
to crown His silence
with eternal song
