Portrait of Corizus hyoscyami. Known as the "cinnamon bug" (Zimtwanze) in Germany. Portrait of Bembecia ichneumoniformis, a wasp mimicking butterfly. (Very happy with this photo!)

Drosophila eggs look surprisingly cool under the microscope! Kinda makes me want to look at eggs of other insects too! #microscopy #macrophotography #zoology #drosophila
The egg of Drosophila cf. melanogaster under the microscope. It has a net-like pattern all across it and two long dorsal appendages protruding from one side, likely for supplying the embryo inside with oxygen

I’ve been really quiet on here lately since I’ve been busy with designing a poster for IPC15. Aaaaah I’m so excited!! (It will be the first conference for me) Anyway, I fear I’ve left my page unattended for so long that mould has started to appear. Oh no! :0 #microscopy #fungi #mould #photography
Aspergillus sect. Nigri
Black mould photographed with flash + microscope at 10x objective magnification. The image shows various brown spheres which carry the conidiospores (visible as tiny blobs, if you zoom in).Aspergillus sect. Flavi
A yellow Aspergillus. The conidia are even more visible here and form little rows that emanate from the heads like rays. Unidentified blue mould.
The fruiting bodies on this one are very small, so you only see bunch of bluish-grey spheres.

Moths in a human suit (they/them) @lycomorpha.bsky.social · 02/07/2026
I've had an idea in my sketchbook for awhile to draw cryptic moths (eg waved umber, green carpet) with part of the background faded or cut out. So you could appreciate how effective their camouflage is, & also how beautiful they are in their own right. I never got time to try it tho… Until now! 😁
Two very small outline sketches of hawkmoths on a circular background. The moths are only outlined, the circles are filled half in light brown and half in dark brown, in ink.

So the bad news is that my plants have thrips. 😓 The good news is that I got a great photo! #thrips #microscopy #entomology

I was very surprised to find this beetle larva in my marine/brackish water sample today. I thought aquatic beetle larvae occurred exclusively in fresh water! If you have any idea as to what species/genus/family this belongs to, please let me know. I’m very curious! :D #microscopy #beetle #larva

I went to the sea last week and took some water for microscopy. Found a flatworm and just look at those cells! So pretty :D #microscopy #wormwednesday #flatworm
Photo of (almost) the entire worm in regular brightfield microscopy. The intestine is visible as a sort of meandering river of darker cells. Near the middle there is a repeating structure that I think may be eggs/egg-bundles/ovaries? The middle part, zoomed in further. You can see the cells that line the intestine as well as the ovaries(?) more clearlyDetail of the front part with a large statocyst.

Do you have any recommendations of what features to take photos of for IDing? ^^ I have the specimen in alcohol and could probably go up to the 20x objective on this one. A friend mentioned that the bristles on the claws were relevant?

I can finally share the Giant Clam illustration I created for @20kleagueszine.bsky.social !! 🐠🐡🦑 #invert This was my favorite illustration of 2025 :) My papercraft has evolved considerably over the last few years
Papercraft collage looking straight down at a giant clam on the ocean floor. Its flesh is a vivid blue, and its shell is textured and covered in moss. Around the clam are sea grass, isopods, coral, sea stars, sponges, and a rock structure.

Also, from above:
From above (dorsal) the origin of the name becomes apparent. The scales male it look like it’s made from gelatine. Especially when you find it under a rock during low tide!

Onychophorans are weird. They have 3 different kinds of nephridia. Small ones in the first 3 pairs of legs. Huge ones in 4 and 5. And „typical“ ones in all the remaining ones. Also in 4 or 5, instead of having the opening (nephridiopore) at the base of the legs, they open right at the feet. Wth??

Went to a marine exhibition at the Bundeskunsthalle today. Great exhibition all the way through. But I was particularly stunned by the crocheted coral reef. I think this is one of the most beautiful and impressive works of art I‘ve seen. It‘s a collaboration by a few hundred (>1000?) artists.
A small part of the entire artwork. Crocheted corals of various kinds and other reef-life in yellows oranges and reds. It doesn’t even begin to capture the beauty of it irl

That’s probably eggs, I think. But they look like that in a lot of Phyllodoce species. They also produce *tons* of defensive slime when they feel threatened. P. mucosa more than the others. I‘ve handled one once for photography and the amount of slime these little guys produce is unbelievable.
