On this day, June 2nd, 1910, Quentin Compson III died by suicide in Boston, Massachusetts. Quentin's death is fiction, but suicide is not. According to the WHO, over 700,000 people die by suicide each year. There is always help available. www.thecalmzone.net

Southern studies hivemind! Your attention please! Faulkner never acknowledged the work of Flannery O'Connor, did he? I know that O'Connor described him as the "Dixie Limited," but he never mentioned her work in interviews, right?

If Absalom! was published today, Faulkner would have to add a content note decrying Sutpen's actions because heaven forbid readers think critically about the work they're encountering. Hypersensitivity towards "offence" in culture and the academy is excruciatingly infantilising.

As part of “the old” I feel this quote from "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner: “…as the old do, to whom all the past is not a diminishing road but, instead, a huge meadow which no winter ever quite touches, divided from them now by the narrow bottle-neck of the most recent decade of years.”
