I have logged thousands and thousands of miles in these hills and seen all sorts of creatures, but yesterday’s hike was the first time I saw a real live mountain lion in the wild. The pic doesn’t really impart a sense of scale, but it was so big I thought it was a cow at first.

Took my son on a hike to look for globe lilies, aka fairy lanterns. They’re not so common, but I know a good spot.

Hiked through where the Pickett fire burned last year. From a distance, it looks like a lot of the shrubs died, but up close you can see that the root systems survived, as evidenced by this new growth.

Some particularly precocious wildflowers from my hike today. Bluewitch nightshade, maybe? Idk. Lots of green, but this was the only purple I saw in 15 miles, so it stood out.
