Forget trying to pass for normal. Follow your geekdom. Embrace nerditude. In the immortal words of Lafcadio Hearn, a geek of incredible obscurity whose work is still in print after a hundred years, “Woo the muse of the odd.” You may be a geek. You may have geek written all over you. You should aim to be one geek they'll never forget. Don't aim to be civilized. Don’t hope that straight people will keep you on as some sort of pet. To hell with them. You should fully realize what society has made of you and take a terrible revenge. Get weird. Get way weird. Get dangerously weird. Get sophisticatedly, thoroughly weird, and don't do it halfway. Put every ounce of horsepower you have behind it. Don't become a well-rounded person. Well-rounded people are smooth and dull. Become a thoroughly spiky person. Grow spikes from every angle. Stick in their throats like a pufferfish.

Fragment, "Dragons" screenplay, mid-90s. Kevin's ear is bleeding from a gunshot.
SMART ASIAN BOB: You should be careful with that. I knew this Bad Canadian once who got his ear pierced and it got infected, and there was a blood clot, and the blood clot got free and moved up into his brain and killed him.

KEVIN: That is a ridiculous story.

JACK: I’d say it passes belief. Who ever heard of a Bad Canadian?

DUMB WHITE FRANK: Oh, Canadians go bad.

SMART ASIAN BOB: And when they do, they’re the worst.

KEVIN: A bad German, maybe.

JACK: “A Bad Australian.” Doesn’t that sound better? If you tell that story again, you change it to a bad Australian. Then people won’t doubt you so much.

SMART ASIAN BOB: That’s a true story!

JACK: Damn it, that’s not the point.

DUMB WHITE FRANK: Well, what is the point then?

JACK: Plausibility. If you’re telling a story, it doesn’t need to be true, it just has to *seem* true, to be believable. Plausibility is the essence of storytelling; truth has nothing to do with it. Plausibility, boys, plausibility is the key.

Kevin glances at his watch.

KEVIN: It’s about time to go rob the lizard people.

"The Perfect Thief," Ronald J Bass
"My father never understood two things, Paul. What you really can't do. And what you really can."

He nodded slowly, thoughtfully.

"If you really want to own your own life," I said, "you do your fighting in those very marginal moments that reality gives you. Those small ... rare ... chances. You have to hunt frantically for a wall that *can* be moved, and then fling yourself with all your strength. Again and again and again and again. And again. And again. Until you've moved it an inch or a foot or a thousand miles ... just as far as that one will go. And then you have a little more space ... you can be ... a little more free. It's not the result, it's the process ... that makes you alive."

Wait a minute! What am I supposed to be doing? Making up the slogan I shall paint on my placard and tote in the big parade? A parade is a group, and I’m not a group animal. I think a mob, no matter what it happens to be doing, is the lowest form of living thing, always steaming with potential murder. Several things I could write on my placard and then carry it all by myself down empty streets:

Up with life. Stamp out all small and large indignities. Leave everyone alone to make it without pressure. Down with hurting. Lower the standard of living. Do without plastics. Smash the servomechanisms. Stop grabbing. Snuff the breeze and hug the kids. Love all love. Hate all hate.

Doonesbury, ~May 1976:

Kim, an infant, is the last orphan out of Vietnam when it fell, and has been consuming American media. She's sitting at the breakfast table in her high chair and diaper.

Panel 1
Mother: Hope you don't mind breakfast with Jimmy Carter this morning.
Dad: Who?
Kim: Y'all trust me now, hear?

Panel 2
Mom (os): She's been watching the primaries again! We now have the only Vietnamese orphan in L.A. with a Georgian accent!
Kim: Send me to Washington!

Panel 3 - Dad reads newspaper at table.
Kim: Not that I've ever been there -- I haven't! I'm untainted! I have never, ever, EVER been to Washington!

Panel 4
Dad (smiling): I believe you, sweetheart.

A tweet from Joyce Carol Oates: overall takeaway from the Curtis Yarvin profile is that there must be millions of smart-aleck show-offy kids who annoy their teachers and go on to annoy other adults through their lives with their “contrarian” pose that hardens to a carapace over their faces; until, as adults, they still harbor a delusion that, if there is a king, or a fuhrer, he’d be impressed with the guys motor mouth and appoint him to his cabinet rather than deleting him with a negligent swipe of his wrist as Stalin did routinely.

“Yes, me,” Call said. “Why not me?”

Some years before, seeking a car-of-all-work for the château, Hel had followed the advice of a friend and purchased a Volvo on the assumption that a car so expensive, lacking in beauty, comfort, speed, and fuel economy must have something else to recommend it. And he was assured that this something else was durability and service. His battle with rust began on the third day; and little errors of construction and design and setup (misaligned wheels that wore out his tires within five thousand kilometers, a windshield wiper that daintily avoided contact with the glass, a rear hatch catch so designed as to require two hands to close it, so that loading and unloading was a burlesque of inefficient motion) required that he return the automobile frequently to the dealer some 150 kilometers away. It was the dealer’s view that these problems were the manufacturer’s and the manufacturer’s view that the responsibility lay with the dealer; and after months of receiving polite but vague letters of disinterested condolence from the company, Hel decided to bite the bullet and set the car to the brutish tasks of transporting sheep and bringing equipment up rough mountain roads, hoping that it would soon fall apart and justify his purchase of a vehicle with a more reliable service infrastructure. Sadly, while he had found no truth in the company’s reputation for service, there was some basis for the car’s claim to durability and, while it always ran poorly, it always ran. Under other circumstances, Hel would have viewed durability as a virtue in a machine, but he could find little consolation in the threat that his problems would go on for years.

John D MacDonald, One Dreadful Yellow Eye, 1966.
The wind began to search out my tropic bone marrow, and I could smell a sourness in the wind. I remembered that it blew across a dying lake. For a hundred years the cities had dumped their wastes and corruptions and acids into it, and now suddenly everyone was aghast that it should have the impertinence to start dying like Lake Erie. The ecology was broken, the renewing forces at last overwhelmed. Now the politicians were making the brave sounds the worried people wanted to hear.

  Now they were taking half-measures. Scientists said that only with total effort might the process be slowed, halted, reversed. But total effort, of course, would raise havoc with the supposedly God-given right of the thousand lakeshore corporations to keep costs down by running their poisons into the lake. Total effort would boost the tax structure to pay for effective sewage disposal systems.

  So in the night wind, the lake stank, and I went back in out of the wind, and thought of the endless garbage barges that are trundled out of Miami into the blue bright Atlantic. People had thought the lake would last forever. When the sea begins to stink, man better have some fresh green planets to colonize, because this one is going to be used up.

The strange fragments of reality make patterns in your head sometimes. They form a collage that is static for a few moments, giving you the feeling that you are on the edge of some perception that might make all the rest of it a little more meaningful. The elements of this design were Vangie’s dry amber eye, the yelping children at play, the barely perceptible weight of the gun, the slack underlip of the morgue attendant, and the adornment of the thickening body of the young vacationing matron in such a brief snugness of fabric that there would almost inevitably be another towhead added to her brood.

Very probably all perceptions are second hand.

I mean, it's not remotely a coincidence that this shit is popping up like the measles as we approach the midterms.
Listen, you rancid bullshit artist, Nazi in hiding or actual Nazi Stooge, "both sides are the same?" Fuck out of here. California has an actual wealth tax on the ballot, and we already tax the wealthy: not heavily enough, but more heavily than any other state that's not run by Dems.

California *reduced* emissions after Dems took over -- not "per capita," though that would have been impressive enough: overall, even as the population grew.

What you mean, to assume you're emotionally four and intellectually twelve, is that some unknown but non-trivial number of members of the national party are compromised? Well, that one's true, but not what you said. Let me help:

"The only organization capable of beating the fash has been corrupted by the same money that took over the Republican Party. But in places where they're actually in charge, policy resembles Europe, not Texas."

You're welcome. Unless "Europe" isn't your target, and Cuba is, in which case, fuck out of here, no one is that stupid.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
And that, I think, was the handle—that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn’t need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting—on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. . . .

So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark—that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.

Note to a young friend, slightly edited:

Concerning yourself with men's issues is perfectly reasonable, if you're a man. Why wouldn't you?

Now, discerning among what really are issues that affect you as a man, versus patriarchal psychosis handed down from wandering savages in the desert, can be difficult. But you're entitled to look out for your own interests, and anyone sneering at that is not your friend. You *do* need to distinguish between those sneering at you, and those sneering at the patriarchal psychosis; there's wisdom to be found among people who really hate the patriarchy. But it's a normal thing that people who hate the patriarchy are going to hate the parts of you that are tangled up with it -- doesn't speak well of them, particularly, but it's bog standard human behavior, and doesn't speak all that badly of them either -- don't drink at that particular well, is all, unless you can discriminate among the stuff that's directed at who-you-are, at what-you-do, and what-other-men-do that isn't your fault.

When I was in my late 20s and early 30s I knew a bunch of awfully angry feminists. And I learned a lot from them. But the truth is, it required a lot of processing to find the stuff I could use.

What I'd recommend for young men is that you do what you're doing now -- find some older liberal men who've solved the stuff you're dealing with, or at least appear to have -- it can be hard to be sure. Listen to what they have to say on various subjects. Contrast *that* with how they're doing in their private lives -- do the people around them love them? Are they and the people in their lives healthy and happy?

A lot of wisdom you can get from anyone, of any race or gender, who's lived a life and thought deeply about it. But in the how to be a man part of your life? Find men who look like who you want to be, and ask them.
~~~~~
End of note to the kid -- but I will say that this is just what I did when I was young. I listened to my Dad; didn't always agree with him, but did listen. He loved me and wanted me to do well. Older men in my life -- those who are left -- have served as a sanity check for me all the way up until now, in my mid-60s. I don't always agree with anyone -- I didn't always agree with Dad, or Steven Barnes, or Steve Perry, or David Gerrold, or my friend Dick Sommers, may he rest in peace -- you have to live your own life and make your own mistakes, to a degree. But there are people out there who've gotten it right. (This is true for women, and transgender people, and black people, and almost any other flavor of human you may be: almost certainly *someone* out there has figured out what you're dealing with. Looking at that person, is that someone you want to be like? Because if they're really like you, you can probably get close.)
He didn’t tell Newt all he knew. He didn’t tell him that even when life seemed easy, it kept on getting harder. Deets liked his work, liked being part of the outfit and having his name on the sign; yet he often felt sad. His main happiness consisted of sitting with his back against the water trough at night, watching the sky and the changing moon.
He had known several men who blew their heads off, and he had pondered it much. It seemed to him it was probably because they could not take enough happiness just from the sky and the moon to carry them over the low feelings that came to all men.
Those feelings hadn’t come to the boy yet. He was a good boy, as gentle as the gray doves that came to peck for gravel on the flats behind the barn.
...Jews went to their death – arriving on time at the transportation points, walking on their own feet to the places of execution, digging their own graves, undressing and making neat piles of their clothing, and lying down side by side to be shot – seemed a fine point, and the prosecutor, asking witness after witness, “Why did you not protest?,” “Why did you board the train?,” “Fifteen thousand people were standing there and hundreds of guards facing you – why didn’t you revolt and charge and attack?,” was elaborating it for all it was worth. But the sad truth of the matter is that the point was ill taken, for no non-Jewish group or people had behaved differently. Sixteen years ago, while still under the direct impact of the events, David Rousset, a former inmate of Buchenwald, described what we know happened in all concentration camps: “The triumph of the S.S. demands that the tortured victim allow himself to be led to the noose without protesting, that he renounce and abandon himself to the point of ceasing to affirm his identity. And it is not for nothing. It is not gratuitously, out of sheer sadism, that the S.S. men desire his defeat. They know that the system which succeeds in destroying its victim before he mounts the scaffold … is incomparably the best for keeping a whole people in slavery.”
The U.S. is not far behind them.
Picture of Itamar Ben-Gvir sticking his tongue out at Palestinian prisoners.
Text:
@senex_official
Ben-Gvir is building gallows with viewing booths so people can watch Palestinian prisoners be hanged.
He's turning executions into a spectacle.
National sadism.
In 1965, an American writer could look at other countries and see where they were broken. I don't suppose MacDonald would be shocked to find us in the state of Batista's Cuba.
“He was a womanizer. Always several mistresses in Havana. Many times they were foolish American girls he would keep there for a time. Big cars. A personal bodyguard. Another house at Varadero. A big cruiser. Also, a personal taste for gold. Gold fittings in cars and home and boats, gold accessories for himself and his woman, art objects of gold. A vulgar man, my friend. A dangerous and vulgar man, a kind we breed too often in Latin America.”
“Not just there. Everywhere.”
“But old Cuba was a place where such an animal can thrive. And the heart of it, always, is the corruption of the courts.”
John D. McDonald, A Deadly Shade of Gold.
Bloom County, Milo and Binkley are sitting on the stoop together, Binkley is reading.
Milo: What's that, Binkley?
Binkley: An envelope I found in Bill the Cat's room.
Milo: Compromising pictures of Jeane Kirkpatrick!
Binkley: They're address to ... The Soviet Embassy!
Milo: Hmm...
Binkley: Hmm...
Editor's Note -- The preceding exchange was an example of "Foreshadowing," or, a subtle hint of plot developments to come. A common literary device, it's often used in contrast to another, less-impressive literary device, that of "making it up as you go" ... which, by the way, is a literary device frequently seen in other features ... such as, ssay, "Nancy," but never, *never* here.
Remember: "Foreshadowing," your clue to quality literature.
