It's true that most new ideas are bad ideas. Theodore Sturgeon's 90% of everything observation applies most places. Fash will yell about this. Don't let them. They're a death cult who haven't had a new idea since sometime around John Locke. Be cautious? Sure. Prudence (can't say conservatism […]

I used to be unreasonably protective of my kids. That wiring was so strong it didn't really permit a reasonable sense of doubt. (Niven's Protectors were a more modest extension of that reflex than childless people probably realize.) Listening to a buddy burble about his grandkids? I didn't know […]

So why did the Nazis perform so strongly in 1930? As paradoxical as it sounds, it might be for the same reason that voters turned away from the Nazis in 1928: its propensity to violence. Ever since Hitler had been in the NSDAP, he had talked about one thing: executing his political opponents […]

Wait a minute! What am I supposed to be doing? Making up the slogan I shall paint on my placard and tote in the big parade? A parade is a group, and I’m not a group animal. I think a mob, no matter what it happens to be doing, is the lowest form of living thing, always steaming with potential murder. Several things I could write on my placard and then carry it all by myself down empty streets:

Up with life. Stamp out all small and large indignities. Leave everyone alone to make it without pressure. Down with hurting. Lower the standard of living. Do without plastics. Smash the servomechanisms. Stop grabbing. Snuff the breeze and hug the kids. Love all love. Hate all hate.

Doonesbury, ~May 1976:

Kim, an infant, is the last orphan out of Vietnam when it fell, and has been consuming American media. She's sitting at the breakfast table in her high chair and diaper.

Panel 1
Mother: Hope you don't mind breakfast with Jimmy Carter this morning.
Dad: Who?
Kim: Y'all trust me now, hear?

Panel 2
Mom (os): She's been watching the primaries again! We now have the only Vietnamese orphan in L.A. with a Georgian accent!
Kim: Send me to Washington!

Panel 3 - Dad reads newspaper at table.
Kim: Not that I've ever been there -- I haven't! I'm untainted! I have never, ever, EVER been to Washington!

Panel 4
Dad (smiling): I believe you, sweetheart.
Kim: Well, once to pick up a peanut subsidy. But I kept my eyes closed!

A tweet from Joyce Carol Oates: overall takeaway from the Curtis Yarvin profile is that there must be millions of smart-aleck show-offy kids who annoy their teachers and go on to annoy other adults through their lives with their “contrarian” pose that hardens to a carapace over their faces; until, as adults, they still harbor a delusion that, if there is a king, or a fuhrer, he’d be impressed with the guys motor mouth and appoint him to his cabinet rather than deleting him with a negligent swipe of his wrist as Stalin did routinely.

“Yes, me,” Call said. “Why not me?”

“I take it back, Woodrow,” Augustus said. “I have no doubt you’ll miss me. You’ll probably die of boredom this winter and I’ll never get to Clara’s orchard.”

Glucosamine, a popular joint supplement, linked to faster Alzheimer’s progression
A large health-record analysis found that glucosamine use was associated with a 25% higher likelihood of mild cognitive impairment progressing to dementia. Lab experiments suggest the popular joint supplement may intensify an abnormal sugar-tagging process in the Alzheimer’s brain, although researchers say clinical trials are needed to determine whether it actually causes harm.

Tom the Dancing Bug by Ruben Bolling.

Panel 1: "Elon Musk and His Doge Pals" in "Rogue One"

Panel 2: Elon is sitting at his desk when two men -- one probably liberal, one in a red MAGA hat and red Trumpian tie -- approach him.

Prob liberal: "Elon! Giant AI robots have gone rogue and are destroying humanity!"

Panel 3:

Elon: There's nothing we can do! This is the price of progress!

Panel 4: The two men are standing outside of a building marked "X".

Prob liberal: "We've got to do something!"

Panel 5: A giant robot is coming down the street.

PL: "One's coming this way!"
Red Hat: "Quick! To the roof!"

Panel 6: The two men jump onto the head of the robot.

PL: Here it comes!
RH: Jump!

Panel 7: They're on the robot's head.

PL: I found a hatch!
RH: Let's see its inner workings!

Panel 8: Elon Musk pops up out of the hatch.

PL: Elon! It's you!
Musk: Of course!

Panel 9:

RH: So AI is just a bunch of mad billionaires doing whatever they want?!
PL: It clearly needs government regul...

Panel 10: A robot marked "OpenAI" appears and zaps the probable liberal.

Sam Altman: Oh, my AI went rogue again! Oh, well, humanity will just have to trust us!

Elon Musk does a Nazi salute.

Musk: Right, Sam! And we're a very trustworthy bunch!

The Red Hat appears to be smiling.
