The workshop starts today, in about an hour. I will talk about the transmission of Arabic translations of Syriac hagiography (unfortunately only online because we don't have childcare today and tomorrow). My colleagues will talk about much more interesting things. So, tune in!

One of the most important inscriptions for the history of Arabic now on #OCIANA: an Arabic-language inscription (pre-4th c. CE) written entirely in Greek letters, shedding light on the pronunciation of Arabic centuries before Islam. A 1: ociana.osu.edu/inscriptions...

I am not trying to make a point. I genuinely don’t know. I know Cordoba was a big city and other cities were big too in Muslim Iberia. But Paris, London, were small. Venice, Palermo?

What’s the rival city outside of Iberia in the Middle Ages?

Fatimid History @fatimid.bsky.social · 28/01/2025
But it was perhaps the largest city in Europe for some time?

I am coming to it from a lot of struggle with programming language. What it offers is pretty cool. Actually it will ask you to paste your csv. Or it will ask to give you a sample and will offer a script to deal with the problem :)

True. Though DeepSeek’s thinking process which is shown in realtime looks impressive. I asked it to look at a badly structured URI’s and extract only the relevant parts and it did a good job at extracting and converting those with little context.

I guess both. I don’t know how these ranking work. Of course it is said that Deepseek is very efficient (it’s as efficient if not better I think) and that share in US firms has just drops. On the other hand tech billionaires seem to be quite about it while some dismissed DeepSeek. Lots of ????

Turkish #etymology of the day: simit "ring-shaped bread with seeds", from Arabic سميذ \ سميد samīd/samīḏ "semolina" (Turkish 'd' devoices to 't' word-finally), from Aramaic ܣܡܻܝܕܳܐ (səmīḏā), from Akkadian 𒆠𒅔𒆠𒅔𒄯𒄯 samīdu, related to 𒀀𒊏𒄯𒄯 samādu “to grind fine”

How is the Emir of Cordoba like the Queen of Sheba?
When in 865 Emir Muhammad I of Cordoba (r. 852-886) sent back the Frankish envoys he had received from Charles the Bald (r. 843-877) the previous year, he entrusted them with a number of gifts, whi…

This one for the top spot: ex-Shii Muslims accusing another ex-Shii Muslim of practicing taqiye (sic) - disguising his actual Islamist beliefs (the modus operandi for Islamists according to these lunatics) without any sense of irony.

The most bizarre thing I saw on the internet is a bunch of ex-Shii Muslims accusing another ex-Shii Muslim of practicing taqiyya - pretending to be an atheist - without any sense of irony.

A fun example of ChatGPT 4o vs. o1 Someone posted this awful tattoo on Reddit today in r/hebrew asking what it says. The letters are Hebrew, but the words are nonsense.

As happened in Spain, in Portugal there was an appropriation of the Islamic past as a narrative of temporal continuity to which the inhabitants of Gharb al-Andalus were totally assimilated, creating the concept of Luso-Arabs. Don't miss our latest article www.alandalusylahistoria.com?p=5066

Apparently there’s a 50% off sale this weekend at Edinburgh University Press, including my recent book **Traces of the Prophets: Relics and Sacred Spaces in Early Islam** The discount brings it down to a more reasonable, if still a bit much, $55. edinburghuniversitypress.com/book-traces-...

Modern spoken Persian (or Turkish) are usually taught before learning classical Persian. That’s unfortunate useless when it comes to Arabic.

Fatimid History @fatimid.bsky.social · 27/11/2024
One can know how to read Classical Arabic and not speak dialects - which are almost different languages. Not the case with Persian.

I think with Persian it’s unforgivable. I would be more lenient with Arabic.

Is this the same cup depicted on this famous coin of Jahangir? The Persian inscription on the coin reads: The world "Jahangir" and "Allahu Akbar" are equal in value until the Day of Judgement. According to the Abjad alphanumeric system, both have a numerical value 289.
