My therapist told me that since I didn’t have friends growing up, I invented them with my characters. Those characters became the paints that I used to explore my world. The last issue (issue 3) shipped in April 1998, and Diamond told me they were dropping me for low sales.

My penciller, Freddy Andersson, flew over from Sweden to be there. Milikardo became how I grappled with my world as an undiagnosed autistic. Lisa Nixon’s introductory story arc in issues 2 and 3 were how I processed my 1994 mugging.

The Black and White boom of the mid-80s had gone bust, so quarter bins were overflowing with inspirational reading. Eventually, I had characters. Eventually, I had a world. Eventually, I had a story. And eventually, at the infamous Conference Eight, I released Milikardo Knights #1.
