Great news! Horace has gained weight since his previous vet appointments and he's looking healthier for real and not just in my hopeful imagination. Will get test results later today or tomorrow to confirm but I am so relieved. Stress levels immediately down by like 15%.

I did it. I got the outside Halloween decorations up at the beginning of October. Now I just need to get some mums for the planters. 🎃👻💀🕷️

These hydrangeas we planted two years ago bloomed this unexpected bright magenta-y purple this year. Some of them are darker, almost like a red wine color. I swear they were a much paler pink last year, but I'm into it. I hope they get huge and cover the whole back section of the yard. 🤞

Got an idea that would just mean bumping up the timeline on my plans (totally doable) and would take about a day to set up (& free, since I already pay for it.) Driving to VT after work and will be back late tomorrow night. Want to have a call on Sunday to talk about it?

Oops! The part where the handsome black and tan tabby so obviously misses me, his beloved housemate, seems to have been left out of the alt text. :p

Yes! BBC NL is the only channel that isn't news we can watch/listen to while cleaning out my uncle's house. I keep confusing the characters because they were suspects in the previous show I hadn't realized had ended. So many are set on islands. So many plots involve cults.

Hazelnut in Dutch is hazelnoot and I think that is the cutest and would be a great name for a pet.

No wonder my uncle had so many sets of cups and saucers and teapots. So many visitors. Oh! And we successfully re-homed all of his plants. No orchids neglected on our watch.

Today I hung out on a cool houseboat my uncle's friend built himself. We had homemade jam and mocktails with syrup from their blackberry harvest. (Zo lekker!) Then coffee with other friends at the now mostly empty house. It's been good to chill after so much organizing and cleaning.

I drove my uncle's car with its Dutch display text and strange icons and even weirder controls to get lunch and go to the hardware and grocery stores and we survived. 🥇🏆💪

Maya the Bee
Vintage copy of Waldemar Bonsel's "Die Biene Maja." There are two anthropomorphic bees on the cover. One is holding a long stem maybe like a spear and the other is kneeling with its hands clasped, pleading. There are lines indicating her wings are moving.

The ladies are even closer today. I love when they do little hop-skips in excitement over arriving at the grass they couldn't reach the day before.
Black and white and brown and white cows munching grass in a field directly next to my uncle's deck. You can see cattails in the irrigation ditch between the properties. Some cows are closer. A brown and white one is looking at the camera. Now a mostly black cow is making eye contact with the photographer. She appears younger than some of the others in frame.

Everyone speaks so cruelly of the distraught onion man tasked with holding his brethren as they await the chopping block. But his sorrow speaks to me.
White ceramic onion with a man's crying face. His open frown and a little hole in his pointed head/hat allow for air flow. A single tear forever on his cheek. A treasure.

Approx four million gorgeous teapots in my uncle's home and this wretched thing was his daily driver. (He did use the cool ones for company, at least.) New rule: Use your nice things yourself.
Lime green ceramic teapot with THEE across the front in a basic serif font, sitting on a star shaped warmer with a tea light candle. I hate it.

Holy shit there are thousands of books in the little apartment next to the garage. In a dozen languages, about languages, the history of languages, learning Dutch, German, English, Spanish, Japanese... and I'm not through a quarter of them. What do I do with them all?

Was awake for over 24 hours and tried to reset by staying up until this time zone's normal bedtime for, like, kids at least, but then was thwarted by the world's loudest mosquito three hours ago. It is 6am. The mosquito is tireless and insatiable and has my respect.

Two decades of capturing Beaver the cat's best angles. These are my faves so far because he developed/printed them himself.
A b/w photo he developed himself of him and his beloved cat Beaver who moved to NL with him from Germany. They are sitting in a wicker chair and she is mid-jump off his lap.B/w photo of Beaver the cat. She is a tabby with big eyes and her ears are in a "really?? More photos?" position.

I'm helping my mom clean & pack up my Uncle Fred's house in the Netherlands. I'm gonna make a thread of things that make me smile even though this is rough. First up: photos. There are thousands of photos & slides from decades of travels and good times.
Three color photos on a wooden tabletop of my Uncle Fred looking cool as hell in the 70s. He is a white man with long dark hair and black framed glasses, and some hip fashions, like a dark suit and a leather jacket.Black and white photo of my uncle Fred smiling at the camera resting his head on his hand, leaning on a table. He is shirtless and wearing a watch.Black and white 1970s photo of my uncle Andy smiling at a table holding a cigarette and wearing a robe looking very suave and a bit like a movie star.B/w 60s photo of my uncle Fred and his bestie. She's in a long hippie dress and he's in bells with a cool jacket. They're leaving a hotel during one of their many adventures.

I don't have a Framework laptop but I wiped an older model Dell that and installed Linux Mint and there's not really anything I need to do anymore that I can't do on it with open source applications. Mint is probably the friendliest distro for new folks. I dig it.

They seem to understand that the power lines are an everyone problem. I think the disease killing all the trees is too. Having my trees treated but not the neighbors on all sides would be pointless. This needs to be a community effort before they weaken and fall on houses _and_ power lines.

My city contracted a service to trim the trees encroaching on power lines. Yes, sure, do that without destroying them, thank you. But can we also bring in an arborist to do something about the blight that has spread across the local trees and caused a premature Autumn leaf fall in August?

Horace investigating the cool new nightlight less than a minute after I plugged it in is a delight I didn't anticipate. Excellent.

100% understand. I had to move here for work and, well. Several notes. It is very 🌲green🌲 and scenic at least. I still find myself going "oh damn" when I drive around a bend into a postcard.

On my uncle: "Since 1995, Fred has been an indispensable part of the Spanga theatre scene; staring dead in a bathtub with a burning cigarette in his hand in Gianni Schicchi, [...], and this summer, no longer as the barber in Der Rosenkavalier. No more Fred in Spanga." www.operaspanga.nl/en/

I swear every time you mention anything about your new place it feels like maybe we are kinda neighbors. If we are (!?) then yeah, super chilly and windy spring this year. My farm share was mostly greens and radishes this week. And carrots from overwinter storage. Late start this time.

How is your writing published? Are we talking blog posts or eBooks? I think I saw a thing like that for pdfs/common eBook formats but I'd need to dig. For blog posts it would depend on your platform. Easier on a diy website to, say, inject code that traps crawlers in a maze of garbage for example.

My new phone's battery has been good for nearly two days so far on a not-even-full charge. And its still only down to 70%. Amazing.

Horace (left) and Nibbles (right) — named by the shelter. I don’t know how Horace got Horaced but Nibs would delicately pull each kibble from her bowl and drop it on the floor to eat individually. Took forever to finish her meals. Animal Control had named her Stubs but the shelter was kinder.
Two snaps of two cats taken in quick succession while the dilute tabby on the right was hollerin’ and the black and tan larger of the two on the left ignores her. There’s a pale curtain behind them that somehow isn’t visibly covered in fur.
