@Alonely0 I am absolutely coming. Yes. I'm doing two things on stage. I'm going to be absolutely crushed by the stress and everything, but yeah!

You know, I've been very critical of GitHub in the past few months, but I have to say, I just opened a very large PR, and I was able to view the entire diff in my browser without expanding anything, without things lagging or whatever. That's nice!

You have to think of weights as more like... a flock of sheep. It's not really about how many you have. It's just about having a lot.

And now it turns out that this is not enough either, because if you use some of the built-ins like simdgroup_multiply_accumulate they might differ across macOS versions (15.x vs 26.x). I love this.
000
amos @fasterthanlime.hachyderm.io.ap.brid.gy · 05/05/2026
Okay, so it turns out that enabling math safe modes (both of them) is not enough, you also have to ship a precompiled version of your metal shaders, if you truly want bit-equality. Which I do.

At least last year, someone finally took a look at the ASR data sets and concluded, they mostly sucked: arxiv.org/abs/2506.17525v1 Now it's on the record.

Data Quality Issues in Multilingual Speech Datasets: The Need for Sociolinguistic Awareness and Proactive Language Planning
Our quality audit for three widely used public multilingual speech datasets - Mozilla Common Voice 17.0, FLEURS, and VoxPopuli - shows that in some languages, these datasets suffer from significant quality issues. We believe addressing these issues will make these datasets more useful as training and evaluation sets, and improve downstream models. We divide these quality issues into two categories: micro-level and macro-level. We find that macro-level issues are more prevalent in less institutionalized, often under-resourced languages. We provide a case analysis of Taiwanese Southern Min (nan_tw) that highlights the need for proactive language planning (e.g. orthography prescriptions, dialect boundary definition) and enhanced data quality control in the process of Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) dataset creation. We conclude by proposing guidelines and recommendations to mitigate these issues in future dataset development, emphasizing the importance of sociolinguistic awareness in creating robust and reliable speech data resources.

I'm gonna go legit insane keeping track of ASR papers. Seventy-two percent of them are "wow this nvidia/qwen model (that we didn't train) is very good" or "we made a model 12x bigger than qwen and gained 1pp WER on this chinese dialect" (drinks champagne, bites down on gold medal, etc.)
100
amos @fasterthanlime.hachyderm.io.ap.brid.gy · 03/05/2026
Imagine working on an ASR paper, and you port your model from one system to another. And your word error rate tanks by 4.6 percentage points (a LOT) and instead of figuring out whatever you messed up and fixing it, you go on to run another hundred evals and publish the paper anyway. ?!?!??
A screenshot from an ASR paper called "Pushing the Limits of On-device ASR" published by Microsoft this year, highlighting a table, table six, because quantization results, and they show the baseline PyTorch is has an AMI score of 11.80 And then they ported FP thirty two weights to ONNX, And the AMI is now inexplicably 16.40

Something's wrong.

www.theargumentmag.com/p/i-can-neve… ...yup
opus 4.7 correctly guessing:

This is almost certainly Amos Wenger (fasterthanlime).
The tells are everywhere:
The "one of us, one of us, one of us" Tod Browning Freaks chant is a recurring bit in his videos. The "My PC? No, comrade. Our PC" gag is exactly his style of pun-driven aside. The content warning framing ("If you are sensitive to any one of those...") matches how he opens videos.
The technical fingerprint is also distinctive: Rust, JIT compilation, profiling tooling pain on macOS driving a switch to Linux, RPC system design, and a sardonic detour about Apple deprecating kernel extensions in favor of FSKit/XPC — that intersection of interests is very specifically his. The "log messages look like they were written by a fifteen-year-old who's left Apple since" line has the exact cadence of his Apple gripes.
Also: "this video" repeated twice in the opening. This is a video script being adapted into a blog post, which is something he does — his posts and videos share the same voice because they're often two versions of the same piece.
Am I right?

@butternut (and yeah for most things, a VM with SIP disabled inside of your daily mac with SIP enabled, is perfectly fine. depends what you need to do)
000
amos @fasterthanlime.hachyderm.io.ap.brid.gy · 30/04/2026
@butternut aaaaa answering this for the 4th time: yes, but disabling SIP = bad for privacy = don't do it on the machine where you're logged into your Apple Account, your bank, your github, etc.

I'll also add, if you work at GitHub/MS, and see a thread like this (perhaps inaccurate, unfair, vitriolic): Unless your employer is SPECIFICALLY paying you to defend them on social media, consider: not. Don't do their PR for free. Do your job. For money.
011
amos @fasterthanlime.hachyderm.io.ap.brid.gy · 29/04/2026
I could just never do one of these jobs. I mean, those people must know how bad things are, right? They're... they have to. It's too obvious, right? And then to go every day on social media and just post memes as if nothing was wrong? The cognitive dissonance they have to deal with, I could never.

Also, are you really complaining about hosting too much code when you rolled out fucking Copilot? For real? Also, hosting code must be like a fraction of the actual compute budget for GitHub, surely? Dwarfed by action runners and... model inference? By a very long shot?

This tweet by the GitHub COO is *bananas* The most egregious failure modes we have been seeing these past weeks are cannot be attributed to "growing pains". This is not PR anymore. It's just gaslighting. xcancel.com/kdaigle/status/20401647…
tweet by Kyle Daigle: Yup, platform activity is surging. There were 1 billion commits in 2025. Now, it's 275 million per week, on pace for 14 billion this year if growth remains linear (spoiler: it won't.)

GitHub Actions has grown from 500M minutes/week in 2023 to 1B minutes/week in 2025, and now 2.1B minutes so far this week.

So we're pushing incredibly hard on more CPUs, scaling services, and strengthening GitHub’s core features.

And as a fine purveyor of hand-crafted shit code for many years, I'm not gonna weigh in on that. 🤣
