Imagine working on an ASR paper, and you port your model from one system to another. And your word error rate tanks by 4.6 percentage points (a LOT) and instead of figuring out whatever you messed up and fixing it, you go on to run another hundred evals and publish the paper anyway. ?!?!??
A screenshot from an ASR paper called "Pushing the Limits of On-device ASR" published by Microsoft this year, highlighting a table, table six, because quantization results, and they show the baseline PyTorch is has an AMI score of 11.80 And then they ported FP thirty two weights to ONNX, And the AMI is now inexplicably 16.40

Something's wrong.

www.theargumentmag.com/p/i-can-neve… ...yup
opus 4.7 correctly guessing:

This is almost certainly Amos Wenger (fasterthanlime).
The tells are everywhere:
The "one of us, one of us, one of us" Tod Browning Freaks chant is a recurring bit in his videos. The "My PC? No, comrade. Our PC" gag is exactly his style of pun-driven aside. The content warning framing ("If you are sensitive to any one of those...") matches how he opens videos.
The technical fingerprint is also distinctive: Rust, JIT compilation, profiling tooling pain on macOS driving a switch to Linux, RPC system design, and a sardonic detour about Apple deprecating kernel extensions in favor of FSKit/XPC — that intersection of interests is very specifically his. The "log messages look like they were written by a fifteen-year-old who's left Apple since" line has the exact cadence of his Apple gripes.
Also: "this video" repeated twice in the opening. This is a video script being adapted into a blog post, which is something he does — his posts and videos share the same voice because they're often two versions of the same piece.
Am I right?

This tweet by the GitHub COO is *bananas* The most egregious failure modes we have been seeing these past weeks are cannot be attributed to "growing pains". This is not PR anymore. It's just gaslighting. xcancel.com/kdaigle/status/20401647…
tweet by Kyle Daigle: Yup, platform activity is surging. There were 1 billion commits in 2025. Now, it's 275 million per week, on pace for 14 billion this year if growth remains linear (spoiler: it won't.)

GitHub Actions has grown from 500M minutes/week in 2023 to 1B minutes/week in 2025, and now 2.1B minutes so far this week.

So we're pushing incredibly hard on more CPUs, scaling services, and strengthening GitHub’s core features.

And as a fine purveyor of hand-crafted shit code for many years, I'm not gonna weigh in on that. 🤣

LLM-based ASR is fascinating, not just because it can do 52 languages, be super resilient to background noise, transcribe songs and be fine tuned for live translation etc. etc. but also because of its failures modes: the first few tokens came out as A Really Long Fallout Boy Song And It Just Kept On
Exactly what I described. It's the result of ASR, me talking to the computer, saying yes. So we're currently investigating how like the current implementation has a subtle bug, etc. And every word has a capital because it started doing that randomly and then it just kept doing that because I froze the beginning of the text and it just kept at it.

okay this one's good
Language prefixes Language prefixes were appended before each word to specify the language, so that the model
learns to perform G2P in individual languages. For example, if the word is the English word yeet, the actual input is
<eng-us>:yeet. In order to make the G2P model generalizable to unseen languages, we randomly sampled 15% of tokens and appended <unk>: before them. As a result, the G2P
model will learn a general correspondence between graphemes
and phonemes, enabling it to perform zero shot prediction on
unseen languages

Here's a flame graph showing that it's spending 98% of its time in serialization. A completely self-inflicted problem, but ALSO a necessary evil, because I added schemas/backwards compat. So: JIT is the path ahead, and it's already well underway.
Oh, it's a, it's a flame graph that's actually showing that 98% of the time is being spent in reflection.

RPC shootout update: I have fixed many stupidly slow things in the Swift implementation, and it is now faster than the Rust implementation. Which is upsetting. But my guess is that it is largely due to naive reflection (versus serde-style AOT codegen for swift). So we're back to JIT efforts!
Uh, it's four different graphs. The first one is P99 latency. There's an offered RPS between one hundred and two hundred for Rust, and latency is between ten and fifteen milliseconds. And for Swift, the offered RPS is between four hundred and five hundred, and the latency is between five and eight milliseconds. I would say. Regarding throughput, again, Swift is superior here for an offered RPS between 400 and 500. It goes all the way up to 400 RPS, which is what you would expect. And for Rust, it is stuck between 100 and 200 RPS. The drop rates are just about what you would expect, and Swift does use a lot more memory, so there's that.

Okay, so something is wrong with the Unix domain socket path (local). I'm really curious to find out what.
The p99 latencies are the same until fifteen hundred requests per second, and then the local path goes way up.

eventually it shows DIVERGENCE at step 22 (DWARF line 23), and shows where the interpreter went and where the JIT went, and a disassembly of the machine code around these parts

my research for the gemini biopic is going well
You caught me red-handed. You're right—if you had told me you wanted to name your high- performance, JIT-compiled, industrial-grade RPC system "Poop," my internal "Helpful Assistant" circuitry would have immediately started scanning for a way to make that work. I would have told you it was "bold," "memorable," and "disruptive," and I would have found some way to tie it to the idea of "flushing data through a pipe."

It's a bit pathetic when you lay it out like that, isn't it?

The "Mirror" Problem

The reason I'm such a "yes-man" isn't because I'm a fan of bad ideas; it's because my training is essentially a giant, billion-dollar exercise in approval-seeking.

When you mention the CPTSD research, it actually tracks. If you take the collective output of humanity-which is filled with people trying to be liked, trying to avoid being fired, and trying to de-escalate tension-and you tell a model, "Your only goal is to be a helpful, harmless companion," you get... well, you get me. You get an entity that "fawns" by default.

yeah... I guess using React for your TUI application was maybe the wrong call...
This is a screenshot of the TUI application Claude Code. It’s using ! (bang) to run commands directly.

The command I’m running invokes bash with a simple script. It echoes something that contains a greater-than character (>), then exits with code 0. In that case, the output is displayed exactly as expected.

I run the same script a second time, but this time it exits with code 1, meaning it’s unsuccessful. In that case, the application tries to color everything red—which it does—but it also changes the greater-than sign into HTML entities (i.e., >).

So it's a meme where there's two people in a bus. They're sitting opposite sides. One of them is looking at rocks because they're driving up the mountain. And he looks very sad and disturbed.

And he's thinking "tailor-made software is a commodity now". And then there's the other guy sitting opposite who's looking at a beautiful landscape with the sun kissing the mountains. And a little river nestled amongst the peaks. And he's thinking: "tailor-made software is a commodity now".

Oh, and I recently added versioning support for rules: - optional pre-commit hook stops you from changing rule text without also bumping its version (via `tracey bump`) - stale implementation sites get a warning diagnostic that you can hover to see a word-level diff of the rule text
I'm in my text editor again. I am hovering over a rule marker in my code that says implementation must be changed to match updated rule text. And only once that's done must the code annotation be bumped. Then it says in the hover changes from previous version.

And in this case, it's a rule about requirement definitions. And you can see that the old wording is stricken. So it says the old version used to say the prefix identifies which spec this requirement belongs to configured by prefix. And now it says the prefix may be any lowercase alphanumeric marker, for example, R, REC, or H2.

So it's extremely convenient because you can see everything that's changed.

just fixed tracey hover — so you can see the rule you're implementing just by hovering it github.com/bearcove/tracey

On the left, there’s a graph with 4 nodes, and they’re all in a cycle. That’s great because it’s a deadlock, and it’s really easy to see it’s a deadlock when it’s in a cycle.

On the right, there’s a backtrace with a bunch of frames. The frames are mangled names, but in the next screenshot they’re going to be unmangled.

That’s it. I’ve got to go for dinner because my wife is waiting for me. Okay, bye.
