Any recommendations for good clergy garment bags? Looking for one that can hold a cassock/alb/chasuble for someone over 6'. ⚓

Never seen one before… but I wouldn’t be surprised it was to be carried with our Lord during a Eucharistic procession? The bells alerting people that the Host was coming. But I’m not sure

Maybe a long shot, but any recommendations for a travel size book of the Gospels or (secondarily) the NT? Ideally leather bound and pages with a decent thickness/not 8 point font. Bonus points for NRSV/NRSVue ⚓️

Before I do a thing, anyone know of a guide mapping pre-liturgical movement ceremonial onto '79 Rite II? Lots of parishes have their own customaries, but I'm looking for something akin the American Missal, but for Rite II. ⚓

Got it! At first blush your post seemed to suggest that certain types of military service should override the normal ethical considerations that goes into selecting church leaders and I was curious as to why. I appreciate the clarification!

Chris @farrarc0.bsky.social · 12/06/2026
To clarify, are you suggesting that military service somehow qualifies someone to serve in those leadership roles in the Church? Or have you seen them intentionally excluded from active parish membership?

It's being articulated by a TEC priest who is tasked with forming new TEC priests. It also came up at the last General Convention before thankfully being tabled. Perhaps you haven't seen this? "Richter has a 20-year-old child with her husband, and a 17-month-old baby with another partner."

For the clergy types - what are the things you memorized/wish you memorized before your ordination? We're required to memorize the Commendation at the Time of Death for Liturgics, but I'm looking to make a broader list. ⚓

Pretty odd. Especially given he was already on admin leave. “The Very Rev. Aidan Smith, Dean of Trinity Cathedral in the Diocese of Pittsburgh, was arrested on February 27 on charges of retail theft and receiving stolen property. He had been on administrative leave since late January.” ⚓️

That’s a big presumption, in some dioceses. And I’m much more concerned about how we care for the laity. Is our theology subject to the law of man? Will we revert to some odd piecemeal approach where we believe marriage means different things in different places? Clergy discipline is important…

Interesting tidbit - the Clergy Compensation Report defines "full-time" for clergy as 28.85 hours a week (1,500 hours a year) or more. I wonder what the actual average hours per week for full-time clergy is? ⚓

I'd love to see a stripped down version for personal use that's just the four offices, propers, lectionary, and readings bound together in one volume.

Chris @farrarc0.bsky.social · 29/07/2025
I love going to services there, but it's definitely a learning curve! SSJE has it all in a binder, so all you need is that with a hymnal, but it obviously doesn't include the readings. There's the Prayer Book Office from the 1980s, but it doesn't include the readings and has other things included.

that comes from THEIR struggle with the text - not what a hyper advanced autocorrect can spit out. AI can't write a sermon for the same reason a robot can't consecrate the Eucharist - it has no soul, no mind, no vocation to ministry. Outsourcing one's ministry to AI feels, to be honest, sinful. ⚓

Chris @farrarc0.bsky.social · 23/07/2025
Anathema. The argument that "life is just a lot" is so disappointing. If you need a sabbatical, engage your bishop, find supply clergy, read from the Book of Homilies. Ask for help - that's okay! But priests owe their congregation the sacraments, prayer, and faithful preaching... ⚓
ncronline.org
Are AI sermons ethical? Clergy consider where to draw the line.
Much of the debate involves grappling with the question of whether AI is being used as a replacement for a sacred human project or whether it's a tool in the service of that project.

chaplains and priests should be trained the same way when their ministries are so different. In the end, I'm deeply thankful for your ministry, and pray that the next time I'm in the hospital I have someone as faithful as you to visit me. Prayers, my friend.
