The literacy crisis is not just referring to people's ability to literally read and write. It's also people's inability to read for context. I've been a public educator for over 20 years and I have never, ever seen it this bad.

Every once in a while, I like to remind the world (and educate the young) that Boston-born actorJohn Cazale was in only five feature films before he passed away in 1978. All five of those films were nominated for Best Picture.

Snowy day. Japan

Enveloped within a dense swirl of tumbling snowflakes (botan-yuki), a woman clad in traditional winter attire takes shelter beneath the dark timber eaves of a historic Hida-style building. Set against the deep, saturated tones of dark wooden lattice screens (koshi) and a weathered timber facade, her mustard-yellow coat (azuma-coat) and striking crimson accents create a vivid focal point amidst the freezing scene. Deep within the shadowy alcove of the entrance, three straw-wrapped sake barrels bearing the mark Hourai (蓬莱) sit stacked in quiet repose. Overhead, a single glowing globe lamp sheds warm, amber light across the threshold, illuminating a potted plant with late-autumn foliage and a snow-dusted wooden lantern (tōrō) resting along the stone curb.

Evoking the preserved townscapes of Hida-Furukawa in Gifu Prefecture, this scene highlights the deep historical ties between traditional Japanese sake brewing and the master woodworking lineage of the Hida region (Hida no Takumi). The stacked barrels in the background belong to the Watanabe Sake Brewery, founded in 1870, whose signature Hourai sake is produced through ancient kanzukuri (cold-season brewing) techniques that rely on the region's freezing winter air and pure subterranean mountain waters. The dark, heavily latticed facade reflects the region’s specialized architectural monozukuri (artisanal mastery), engineered to withstand heavy snowfall while providing privacy and temperature control. The figure’s winter ensemble showcases the refined townsperson aesthetic (iki), where rich outer layers protect against mountain chills while retaining an effortless, urban sophistication.
