Chapter 15: Honeysuckle (金银花): Devotion, everlasting love
Summary:

Shen Yuan waits patiently for over five years for Liu Qingge’s soul to transfer to his mushroom body. It never happens.

    (or, zhan yuan’s widow era)

“Start of spring,” Shen Yuan said, staring at the dirt. He’d come by every day this week instead of every couple. He’d been sitting here for most of the day.

“I’m going to leave you some clothes next to the nearest tree. I’ll mark it so you know, hopefully,” Shen Yuan said. “Just in case you decide not to pop up while I’m here. Which would be rude,” he added, “and probably pretty disorienting.”

He waited another shichen but it was starting to get dark and conserving his energy meant walking and not flying home.

Shen Yuan paused over the mushroom field and smiled at the packed dirt. “I’ll be back next week. We’re finally finishing off the restorations for the brothel and if I’m not there they’ll assume I’m sleeping off a depressive episode or something.”

He tapped his fingers gently against his leg. “I can last a little longer,” he said. “If you need to take your time.”

The flowers on the trees had barely blossomed. It was probably still too early. Maybe another week or two.

He could wait that long.

okay i'm just gonna poke at this for fun when I get stuck and actually work on the WIPs I want to finish right now
He couldn’t help but look at the robes everyone was wearing after so many years helping A-Die with the silk trade. They weren’t color-coded like Cang Qiong, mostly they were a base of white or black (no pink, so he supposed that was saved for the Little Palace Mistress whenever she was born) with some yellow interspersed. There were flowers embroidered on some of the robes, generally peonies, but he’d seen begonia and marigolds too. Given the name, there should’ve been some silk tree flowers, but Shen Yuan hadn’t seen any so far. Just the major flowers associated with wealth.

There was also a piping or border on all the outer robes that were in a certain color—sometimes that color extended to the embroidery on the flowers and sometimes it didn’t. There were several colors for the outer disciples that seemed to match which rooms they were assigned to. Shen Yuan had a running piping of blue-green on his white robes (with no flowers so that maybe was a customization) and so did the other people on his floor. There were also some with green and red who were one floor up and seemed to have private rooms ‘plural.’ The outer disciples that seemed the busiest and he knew shared rooms had amber and purple piping threaded through their uniform.

The inner disciples only ever had white, silver, and gold when he saw them. They almost always had at least one flower embroidered into the design.

It was some kind of ranking system, but Shen Yuan couldn’t figure out what it was.

He’d lasted longer than he thought he would resisting going to Huan Hua Palace’s massive library, so this was a good excuse. Shen Yuan made his way there and was stopped before he could enter by a disciple wearing silver piping.

“You’re not authorized,” he said.
“Oh, I didn’t know we needed permission to go to the library,” Shen Yuan thought that was a bit much, but maybe it was like getting a library card. “Does shixiong know who this one can ask?”

The disciple gave him an up and down once-over and snorted. “Someone with jade not aquamarine.”

Shen Yuan tried to ask a few more questions, but got the feeling he was annoying the guy, which well! He was new! Be helpful, Shixiong!

Shen Yuan briefly wondered if she should ask one of his teachers and come back later, but he really wanted to get in there. It was like he could smell the books from here. They had to have some insane bestiaries at the very least. Lore! He could get lore.

Then he saw an outer disciple wearing white robes with green piping, more concentrated than the blue-green in his own, slid right past Silver Shixiong.

System? He tried.

[Thank you for contacting the System! The System is here to assist you 24/7. As a free ‘bonus’ tip: Huan Hua Palace offers a ranking system. Contributions for initial disciples determines placement. Outer Disciples are ranked as such: Amber, Amethyst, Aquamarine, Garnet, and Jade.]

“They paywalled the library?” Shen Yuan balked out loud, before he could stop himself.

“Does our new shidi need some help?” asked a low, amused sounding feminine voice from behind him. When Shen Yuan slowly turned around, it was of course his worst nightmare as a brand new baby disciple.

[Congratulations! User 02 has earned their first 10 B-Points by meeting Head Disciple Su Xiyan!]

preview for next willows update, silly me for thinking courtesan shen yuan who only has ever had male clients and then ends up in a relationship with a man wouldn't have his weird gay crisis
Shen Yuan couldn’t help it. He laughed. He dropped his arm and looked up at Airplane. “No. I didn’t even think I was gay—” Shen Yuan had a momentary mental twitch. “Actually, am gay? Shit. I… they don’t have a lot of female clients that want male courtesans so I didn’t even consider… and then Qingge looks like that and we only had sex because he was dying. Fuck. I don’t even think I’ve ever thought about it.”

“Bro,” Shang Qinghua said, leaning towards him. “Not thinking about it kinda supports you being gay more than anything else.”

“I could be bi!” Shen Yuan objected.

Shang Qinghua looked skeptical. “Really, Cucumber-bro? You are surrounded by beautiful women all the time who would be happy to throw down to bone town. If you haven’t thought about it by now, I don’t think you were ever going to.”

Shen Yuan sat up and spun around to glare up at him. “That doesn’t count! All the women belong to…”

“My son?” Shang Qinghua suggested, grinning.

Small Steps into the Sun | ~15K | M | Complete {RTs 💙} #svsss #bingqiu Luo Binghe is helped out of the woodshed after a hard punishment from a man who looks like his Shizun (aka Shen twin AU but like about how you react to trauma) archiveofourown.org/works/94031336
 Small Steps into the Sun
fancywaffles
Summary:

Luo Binghe is tending to his wounds from his latest punishment in the woodshed like any other day on Qing Jing Peak when he’s led out of it by a man with his Shizun’s face and none of his personality. That day his life changes forever.

(or, shen twin au where they're both equally traumatized but one of them manages to break the cycle of abuse)

He swallowed and automatically started babbling apologies even though he knew that seemed to make it worse (everything he did seemed to make to worse).

“Hush,” Shizun said, in a softer voice than Luo Binghe had ever heard.

Luo Binghe blinked furiously as Shizun came closer, kneeling in the dirty wood dusted floor of the shed in front of him. The anger seeping out of Shizun’s face was as unfamiliar enough to worry Luo Binghe had finally pushed himself into a qi deviation.

“Let me see that,” Shizun said and Luo Binghe obeyed immediately, handing him the bandages. Shizun frowned at them and Luo Binghe knew he’d screwed up somehow. Ning-shijie hadn’t said where she’d gotten them from. He truly hoped she hadn’t gone into stores that she’d be caught for—that Luo Binghe would be caught for.

Shizun was frowning at the bandages and looking Luo Binghe over in a way that made him immediately drop his head. He didn’t have enough space to kowtow with how close Shizun was to him.

Luo Binghe watched Shizun’s hands, his elegant fingers clenching into angry fists and winced—the reaction automatic. Shizun hated his flinching. He steeled himself for correction, but only a gentle open palm touched the top of his head.

“It’s all right,” Shizun said, comforting and soft in a way Luo Binghe had never heard him. “You’re going to be all right. You’re the new shidi, yes?”

The phrasing was strange enough for Luo Binghe to open his eyes again and lift his gaze only enough to see Shizun’s face. Was this a trick? Or was Shizun the one who had qi deviated—badly enough to forget how much hated Luo Binghe?

liu qingge's internal monologue: if i ever get my wife out of this stupid house and into the sect the beast peak lord is going have a field day
“Feiyan,” Liu Qingge said, the following morning, cracking through the haze of very comfortable sleep Shen Yuan was enjoying.

“Mghmm,” Shen Yuan said, articulately and then curled more comfortably around his fuzzy pillow.

There was an annoyed grunt and then Liu Qingge’s hands trying to take Shen Yuan’s fuzzy pillow which then made a very alarmed chirping noise. Shen Yuan woke up to find his arms entangled with the Flowered Otter-Stoat who seemed a little pinker than it had the last time he’d seen it.

“Peach fuzz,” he mumbled and then woke up properly when he realized Liu Qingge had murder face on. “Ah, it’s fine don’t kill it!” Shen Yuan ended up putting the furry thing behind him and holding his hands up in front of his murderous looking husband who… to be fair had apparently also woken up to a random furred creature invading their bed.

Shen Yuan would’ve had a far different opinion if it had been a rat or something.

He might’ve suggested depositing it outside and not killing it, but still.

The Flowered Otter-Stoat chirped angrily and then slunk off again before Shen Yuan could react other than to restrain Liu Qingge from murdering it.

“I think it was looking for a safe spot last night,” Shen Yuan said. It must’ve been quiet to be able to sneak in last night without waking either of them (or more honestly without waking Liu Qingge, Shen Yuan wasn’t exactly a light sleeper).
Liu Qingge looked less murderous and more exasperated. “It’s a weasel.”

“Flowered Otter-Stoat,” Shen Yuan corrected. If it was going to keep coming back to him, probably needed a name. Peach Fuzz was a little ridiculous but on the right track. “Tao Hua,” he said, deciding Peach Blossom was a solid name to go by. Especially if the creature perked up in health and actually started growing them.

“The thing that escaped from the beast tamer?” Liu Qingge asked skeptically. He was eyeing around the room like it might jump out and attack him from any corner.

“Tao Hua was very hungry and I think I’m the only one who offered it food. It was really sweet! You scared it,” he added, frowning.

Liu Qingge’s mouth twisted into shapes and then he shook his head, throwing the covers off and getting out of bed.

It was far earlier than Shen Yuan wanted to do that so he flopped back down and grinned as Tao Hua snuck back into his arms and snuggled up, chirping inquisitively and blinking those huge eyes at Shen Yuan again before Shen Yuan used both hands to pet it.

Liu Qingge came back in dressed for the day and found him lazing in bed with the Flowered Otter-Stoat and sighed very deeply before grunting, “Fine,” and then leaving the room again.

how to seduce a war god by shen yuan--accidentally
Liu Qingge made a face at that and then turned back to Shen Yuan. “You can shoot directly at me with a normal arrow, it won’t penetrate the skin.”

Shen Yuan knew his expression was pinched, but it was very difficult not to make that face when his husband was telling him to shoot him with an arrow while his apparently childhood sweetheart was making fluttery eyes to join the harem.

“It won’t,” Liu Qingge said, again, like that was the problem. He held his hand out.

“I’m not stabbing you with an arrow,” Shen Yuan said.

Liu Qingge rolled his eyes. “My physical cultivation is too high for it penetrate the skin unless you put significant force behind it.”

Okay that was actually cool. Shen Yuan was almost tempted to try stabbing an arrow through the middle of his hand to test it when someone cleared their throat.

The attendant bowed politely. “Young Master Liu, Lady Tian wanted to extend an invitation to tea when you arrived.”

“No,” Liu Qingge said, flat as that and neither the attendant nor He Xiaowan seemed surprised at least. He shook his head and tried to convince Shen Yuan to shoot him again instead.

It was nearly a half hour of that before He Xiaowan gave up and left. Shen Yuan had only agreed to practicing with him and not against him until Liu Qingge had mentioned he could use his sword to bat the arrows away.

That had seemed far too cool not to try and honestly he trusted War God using War God Sword more than shooting an arrow directly at his face.

Chapter 14: Cherry Blossom (樱花): Life, Beauty
Summary:

Tianlang-jun has arrived at Huan Hua Palace for his promised revenge, along with the final two legendary beasts of myth.

(or, actions scenes are the bane of my existence)

Shen Yuan fumbled with his sleeves, ignoring the screaming around him until he realized it was being directed at him from Shen Qingqiu telling him to get out of the area. Shen Yuan kept fumbling in his sleeves and pulled out the emergency beacon Liu Qingge insisted he carry on him.

It was a fucking emergency all right. Snail Godzilla was attacking his city, Shen Yuan was calling his Monster Killer War God boyfriend. He activated the talisman and it burned into a symbol in the air and disappeared.

Shen Qingqiu stopped screaming at him and gave Shen Yuan a slightly assessing look before repeating his order to get out of there.

Shen Yuan looked around. “Where’s Ming Fan?” The kid had just been there. Sure Shen Yuan didn’t particularly like him, but he didn’t deserve to get run over by a giant snail.

“I sent him to Cang Qiong,” Shen Qingqiu said, rather calmly for the situation. “I insist you go into the forest and find shelter.”

“Oh, fuck you,” Shen Yuan said, and turned around to run back into the brothel.

idk if i can stretch out resisting the wife beam as long as I want to hahahaha, it's a lot easier to slow burn liushen when they're not already married
Liu Mingyan was a kid, but she didn’t have an overly sweet tooth so Shen Yuan suspected the amount of mooncakes they’d ended up buying her had more to do with her having fun ordering her brother around and seeing what she could get away with than anything else. She’d eaten one. Shen Yuan had one and Liu Qingge had been forced to put the rest in his qiankun sleeve under protest while they enjoyed the festivities.

“I thought they talked to you and told you their names,” Liu Mingyan said in an accusatory tone when she overheard Shen Yuan mentioning what he’d finally decided to name his bow.

“That’s only certain weapons,” Liu Qingge said. “It only happens half the time with swords from the sword wall and those are usually ones that have been previously wielded.”

“So the swords remember their names?” Shen Yuan asked. That was extremely cool lore. He wondered if Zheng Yang ever had a previous wielder.

Liu Qingge made a face. “Maybe. I’d have to ask Wei Qingwei.”

“Ge prefers to hit with his sword and not talk with it,” Liu Mingyan said, very sensibly and Shen Yuan covered his smile with the back of his hand.

“What else would I do with it?” Liu Qingge asked. “Invite it for tea?”

Liu Mingyan fought the laugh, but Liu Qingge kept going. “Or does Mingyan want to start a bookclub for swords?”

Shen Yuan broke first, laughing at the mental image of several spiritual weapons being told the dangers of plot contrivances that split up the romance she wanted to work out.

When he recovered himself, Mingyan was eyeballing one of the booths selling floating sky lanterns and Liu Qingge was looking at him in a way that made him feel… well it wasn’t the judgmental x-ray gaze anyway. He bit his lip and broke eye contact, going to help Mingyan pick out a lantern she liked.

dragging my ass to bed now, but had to share baby liu mingyan cos i love her
“Miss, those books are too mature for you,” her attendant said, sounding exasperated.

Liu Mingyan crossed her arms over her chest and frowned harder.

“Which books?” Shen Yuan asked, quietly.

The attendant looked at him and only hesitated for a moment (all that not being a dick to the servants was finally paying off), “Young Miss Liu would like some of the pretty yellow ones.”

“Ah,” Shen Yuan said and sympathized. “Do you want them because of the cover?” he asked Liu Mingyan.

Liu Mingyan shook her head. “I heard the servants talking about one. It was about a princess in a castle who falls in love with a dragon.”

Shen Yuan briefly wondered how far the plot would derail to make Liu Mingyan, the valiant and pure wife, into monsterfucking books. Then again he’d seen what his own meimei read and it wasn’t much better.

She hadn’t been five though.

“So you want a book with a princess or a dragon?” Shen Yuan asked her.

Liu Mingyan seemed to think that over. “Both.”

“I’ll see what I can do,” Shen Yuan said and gave a salute that made her laugh quietly.

The attendant looked wary but hopeful as Shen Yuan made his way to find one of the booksellers. It wasn’t too hard to find something appropriate with that kind of constraint. Maybe higher than her expected reading level, but the bookseller assured him there was nothing approaching yellow and probably only some background romance with one of the knights.

Liu Mingyan excitedly clutched the book when it was handed to her, looking like she carried herself a little taller as she walked. A young Liu Mingyan was generally pretty graceful, but Shen Yuan heard the stomping as she came towards where he and Xue Yiling were reading about Bane Partridge-Stags. Well, Shen Yuan was reading about them, Xue Yiling was absently fanning and making random commentary about the illustrations.

Liu Mingyan glared at him, her slightly flushed cheeks puffing out as she huffed in disapproval. “It ended wrong,” she said, levering the book at him like a weapon.

Shen Yuan gently took it from her and saw the problem was, he laughed. “It’s a series, Mingyan. They’ll have more.”

“They didn’t fix anything!” she protested. “They’re still separated!”

“It’s called a cliffhanger,” Shen Yuan said, gentling his tone. Baby’s first frustration had to be taken seriously—considering how Shen Yuan had almost choked on rage when he died, he wasn’t even being patrolling about that. “Its supposed to leave you enticed to read the next one and see how it ends.”

“Then it should be longer and have a real ending!” Liu Mingyan protested.

“You must’ve really liked it if you’re this upset,” Shen Yuan said, smiling at her. She huffed and then deflated a little and nodded. “I’m sure we can find the next one in the series. The bookseller didn’t say it was new so it might already be finished.”

“Fuqin’s coming home soon,” Liu Mingyan said, which was news to Shen Yuan and apparently Xue Yiling the way she startled. “He always wants to get me something pretty but I’m going to tell him I want the next book.”

“Maybe ask nicely,” Shen Yuan suggested, “that might go over better.”

Liu Mingyan begrudgingly agreed with his logic and then asked some questions about his open book. He wasn’t looking at particularly brutal illustration so he had no qualms showing her. She wasn't as interested as she had been in the prospect of a dragon and princess dating, but she did settle next to him and listened politely as he kept accidentally going on excited tangents about things that weren’t in the bestiary.

wife beamed so hard accidentally, liu qingge was convinced he was up to something--poor former wife attempting all sorts of traditional seduction techniques when all she needed to do was go off on a tangent about weird creatures
“Can—I—can we talk first?” Shen Yuan asked, scrambling for composure. He had the urge to cover himself with the blanket even though he wasn’t undressed and the nightgown he’d changed into wasn’t transparent or even lewd by modern standards.

Liu Qingge’s eyebrows furrowed. “Why?”

“It might make it less awkward,” Shen Yuan said, wondering how this usually went.

There were no sizable bosoms to heave, so he assumed it wasn’t like a sex scene in PIDW. Both a gift and a curse given how bad they were—but at least then Shen Yuan would have some kind of reference point.

Liu Qingge’s face made a series of expressions and finally he sighed. “Fine.”

There was a long awkward stretch of silence before Shen Yuan realized he was going to have to be the one directing the conversation. That was fine! He could manage that. There were plenty of things he was curious about that maybe wouldn’t be terrible to discuss.

“Ah, how’s preparation for the conference going?”

“Fine,” Liu Qingge said.

Shen Yuan struggled for a moment. “That’s not very specific.”

Liu Qingge looked annoyed. “What specifically are you asking about? You’ve never been interested before.”

“Isn’t this your first one?” Shen Yuan asked. He’d thought he’d done the math on that right. “As a Peak Lord, I mean.”

Liu Qingge had excelled at several as a disciple, based on the many many accolades in what Shen Yuan was calling the Liu Family Museum. Liu Qingge sighed and crossed his arms over his almost bare chest. At least this time he didn’t look annoyed directly with Shen Yuan. “Mn. It mainly means more paperwork and useless meetings. It’s why I have to leave in the morning.”

“Where are they holding it this year?” Shen Yuan asked. There weren't a lot of details in PIDW about the IACs where Luo Binghe didn’t fall into the Endless Abyss.

“The Qinshui Islands,” Liu Qingge answered.

“Oh, that’s smart,” Shen Yuan said, “they wouldn’t have to transport as many low-level beasts in or set up barrier arrays… unless they have demonic beasts that can swim.”

Liu Qingge was giving him a strange look, but then nodded, slowly. “They have some specialists Zhao Hua Monastery brought in that are familiar with the sea creatures.”

“Oh!” Shen Yuan said, remembering something actually relevant from the monster compendium. “Do you think they’ll have Parasitic Flying Whale Crabs? More of a lobster really based on the description, but, that’s probably the right level for challengers and they should have them in the area.”

Liu Qingge narrowed his eyes and then sighed again, looking uncomfortable. “Don’t do that.”

“Do what?” Shen Yuan asked, still caught up in his mental list of which possible creatures might be used as challenge for the competitors in that area.

“Pretend to be interested,” Liu Qingge said, his discomfort increasing. “I don’t know what my mother said, but I told you before, I don’t need you to—can we just get this over with?”

Shen Yuan briefly considered listening to Xue Yiling about the whole memory issues things, but found himself nodding instead—he kind of wanted to just get it over with too.

At least being cut off when he was enjoying talking about something that clearly was no interest to the other person was something he was used to his from old life.

Thus followed the most awkward night in the existence of creation.

so anyway, shen yuan transmigrates into liu qingge's bitchy grade-b villainess wife (tumblr post author said two cakes was fine, so my brain worm can feed)
Other than accidentally running into a new stupid statue someone had shoved in the middle of the courtyard, Shen Yuan didn’t have any trouble. He dismissed Xue Yiling early, after she went on a very loyal verbal rampage about how rude it was Shao Feiyan wasn’t at the actual dinner and various creative descriptions of the various Liu cousins and other gossipy bitches.

He’d probably be amused about that later, but decided to dig out the novel he was hate-reading as a distraction. Ironically, Shen Yuan did not want to be focused on his own life right now—mostly because it still felt so much not like his own life.

He wasn’t sure three months was enough time to adjust to this dog blood garbage.

Thankfully the book was atrocious and Shen Yuan was very distracted by whatever the fuck the author was thinking when they wrote this. The villainous demon king had just caught up to the heroic cultivators he’d been harassing for the last seven chapters by sending attacks on them every twenty minutes no matter where they went—those scenes had been decent and exciting, but now there was no explanation after all that buildup as to how the demon king was tracking them in the first place!

At least Airplane had blood mites as a plot device! Shen Yuan started rereading the paragraph where they killed the demon king without even mentioning the mystery that made up most of the main plot to make sure he hadn’t somehow missed something. He was so caught up in his disgust that the loud bang of his bedroom door slamming open startled him badly enough to throw the book at the intruder.

Who caught it, with an irritated almost familiar disgust. Were Shen Yuan’s brain working properly he might’ve made the logical jump from Point A to Point B.

Instead he threw the next closest thing at the intruder in his bedroom, which was unfortunately his pillow. That was no longer ceramic so practically worthless to chuck at someone trying to kill him.He caught that too, eerily smooth with the same irritated expression. “What—”

“Get out!” Shen Yuan said, which he thought was a very reasonable thing to shout at a stranger who had just kicked your bedroom door in, no matter the gender or situation, but the man merely looked confused.

The confusion cleared up after a second of Shen Yuan trying to find something actually feasible to chuck at the—weirdly pretty intruder (was everyone this gorgeous but him? no wonder Shao Feiyan was such a bitch).

“I need to prepare for the Immortal Alliance Conference, so we either get this over with now or not at all, because I won’t be able to come next week.”

It took Shen Yuan’s brain more than a moment, because it flatlined as he did the math.

No.

Absolutely not. That was not what Liu Qingge looked like. That was not the boorish, gritty man that Shao Feiyan had described in her journals! This was definitely not the grizzled and scarred war veteran clearly alluded to in the books—this was a fucking model selling vaguely illegal products on a billboard and getting away with it because of the cheekbones.

“Well?” Shen Yuan’s apparent husband said, impatiently.

“Not at all,” Shen Yuan replied, automatically. The indomitable War God, Bai Zhan Peak Lord, Liu Qingge scoffed, shrugged, and then walked out the door, slamming it behind him.

Shen Yuan waited until his breath steadied and then reread those cutting journal entries… okay so Shao Feiyan hadn’t mentioned Liu Qingge’s looks necessarily, but still.

He thought back to dinner and the beautiful cold and cutting expression of Liu Qingge’s birth mother and then Shen Yuan gingerly sat on the floor and breathed out.

“Could’ve knocked at least,” Shen Yuan shot at the closed door.

Summary:

Shen Yuan lived a literal fairytale when he was transmigrated to the world of Proud Immortal Demon Way. That fairytale, however, was a cheap Ye Xian/Cinderella knock-off with an extremely strict System mandate for the seventeenth wife of Luo Binghe to stay ‘in character.’

Ten years after Song Yangjie escaped the Underground Palace to live freely from OOC restrictions as Shen Yuan, he runs into his husband again. Who doesn’t recognize him and has no idea he’s even been missing a wife for this long.

(or binggeyuan divorce fic that is also somehow cinderella and the system is the true evil stepmother)

No, that wasn’t it. Shen Yuan knew Binghe was indifferent, but they’d been (they still were) married. Shen Yuan hadn’t done anything to change his face! Sure, he’d jumped on the chance to rid himself of the back pain inducing tits that this life had given him, when he’d been Song Yanjie. And he had the Root of Wagstaff Thorn even if he hadn’t gotten the guts to use it yet. He definitely preferred male clothes but that had always been true. Still he knew it wasn’t perfect, half the town threw in the towel and used ‘they/them’ pronouns with him (which honestly Shen Yuan kind of liked sometimes). That whole gender fuckery identity crisis was still a muddled mess in his mind that he wasn’t thinking about—but—

“Mm?” Shen Yuan finally said, watching closely as Luo Binghe’s black as midnight eyes creased slightly in that way they did when he was irritated but trying to remain pleasant.

“This one was saying,” Luo Binghe said, “that he was told Herbalist Shen might have knowledge of the location of the Crystal Phoenix-Raven’s nesting grounds.”

What?

Shen Yuan stared blankly at Luo Binghe for longer than probably was warranted. The only look in return he received was strained patience. There wasn’t even any swagger to it—wait, Binghe was in disguise. Why was he disguised? Not well anyway, he was still so fucking handsome it was impossible to think he’d be anyone but…

“I didn’t catch your name, young sir,” Shen Yuan said, forcing himself to drop his hand from where it rested on the safety of the blood red pendant tucked beneath his robes.

Brilliant, gleaming teeth that were missing the sharp fanged incisors gleamed at him in a grin. “This one is Zhang Wen.”

Luo Binghe’s go-to fake name when he was pretending to be a traveling cultivator.

Shen Yuan was suddenly hit with the unavoidable fact that Luo Binghe did not recognize him. He shut the window on his face.

Chapter 11: Carnation (康乃馨): Love, affection, admiration
Summary:

Luo Binghe learns the truth about the kind of person his birth mother was and Zhan Yuan is insistent he’s fine when he and Liu Qingge finally take that trip they’ve been planning.

    (or, revealing and healing)

Luo Binghe forced himself not to frown in reaction to that but Zhong Qingzu seemed to notice something that she found amusing. “Su Xiyan was likely my birth mother,” Luo Binghe said evenly.

Zhong Qingzu nodded, though her humor dimmed into something else. “I apologize. This master truly did not mean to offend or bring up bad memories.”

Luo Binghe gave a dismissive shrug since the Old Palace Master wasn’t around. “I never met her.” At the contemplative look Zhong Qingzu gave him, he added some platitudes, “From what I have been told she was a kind and gentle leader.”

He was not expecting the guffaw Zhong Qingzu let out. It was so loud that the Little Palace Mistress and Chang Yun glanced in their direction, concern on Gao Jinyu’s face and barely veiled irritation on Chang Yun’s.

“Gentle,” Zhong Qingzu said, still laughing going so far as to slap her own stomach, “whoever told you that did not know Xiyan. She once ate a Bane Partridge-Stag’s heart raw purely to prove a point.”

It was the first hint of similarity he could draw from the woman who’d abandoned him. He’d eaten plenty of raw hearts in the Endless Abyss. It felt more honest to think of the woman who abandoned him as prideful and sharp rather than his actual mother who was gentle and kind.

last preview I think cos it's in reconciliation stage and that's a) not as funny and b) probably too spoilery?
“You were jealous,” Shen Yuan said, not entirely a question since it made sense even if it made no sense whatsoever. “You were marking your territory,” he corrected and really wished his legs weren’t made of soup so he could stand up and maybe kick him—or leave the room or something.

“It’s not that crass,” Luo Binghe said, which was not a no. “I—I can’t stand going to the palace anymore,” Luo Binghe said. “Being with you is different—”

Shen Yuan’s snort was derisive and loud.

Luo Binghe’s face morphed into a scowl. “It is,” he said, insistently.

happy wip wednesday! i got real excited today when I realized there's only one more chapter until tianlang-jun shows up in willows--binghe's bitchface reminds him of the love who betrayed him
Luo Binghe’s eyes flicked towards Zhuzhi-lang who was pointedly staring at the floor. He waited until Tianlang-jun took his seat again. Lounging in his chair like it was a divan. “Happy birthday by the way. I missed a few being trapped under a mountain and all. I hear you work for the people that put me there.”

“I don’t work for anyone,” Luo Binghe said, settling himself down in a seat. Mobei-jun stood behind him and Sha-Hualing draped herself into the nearest chair.

“Right, yes, you’re attempting to be head of Huan Hua Palace, a sect of demon hating immortal cultivators and also the Emperor of the demon realm.”

“According to you, I’d inherit that,” Luo Binghe said, flatly.

Tianlang-jun laughed and then clenched his fist for the briefest of seconds before waving his hand in the air as if it had never happened. “You even sound like Xiyan. You’re set to inherit her throne as well, so surprisingly filial.”

Luo Binghe stared at him for a moment. Tianlang-jun was… angry that Luo Binghe reminded him of his previous lover. That was as confusing as his existence outside the tomb in Bai Lu Mountain. “You seem to be assuming a lot.”

“Enlighten me then,” Tianlang-jun said, propping his elbows on the table and folding his hands into a shelf to rest his chin on.

“For one, Su Xiyan was not my mother. I never met her, so whatever odd… estrangement you had with her I don’t particularly care.”

Tianlang-jun watched him carefully, his eyebrow raising slightly. “No shock and awe over your father still being alive?”

Luo Binghe looked at him, boredly. “What father.”

Tianlang-jun laughed, falling back into his chair and pressing a hand to his chest. “Oof, that face. The delivery.”

 Chapter 12: Closure and Endings
Summary:

Shen Yuan tries to go back to Cang Qiong Mountain Sect and ignore the Luo Binghe shaped hole in his life now that the protagonist is off fulfilling his destiny in a way that doesn’t include some unimportant NPC Zhan Yuan. Binghe might have a different idea about the inevitability of that future.

“I was surprised actually,” Shen Qingqiu continued, “that I didn’t end up resenting you. You’ve succeeded far more than I have coming from approximately the same start. My assistance and guidance uplifted your potential in a way I’d never personally had and I… didn’t feel bitter about it.”

Shen Yuan stared at him. “Shizun. That’s called teaching.”

moments earlier, bingge was acting almost normal--great job zhuzhi-lang and rip gongyi xiao who has only managed to make him kind of irritated but isn't a cat 5 kaiju threat apparently
“Herbalist Shen,” Zhuzhi-lang said as he approached his booth.

Shen Yuan smiled brightly at him. “Zhuzhi-lang.” He’d thankfully remembered to pack the ‘snake oil’ (not actually oil from snakes but oil for snakes, he didn't even want to start ranting about Airplane) this morning. Shen Yuan took it out and placed it on the counter of the booth. “Always so punctual. I’d almost forgotten there was another New Moon coming up.”

Zhuzhi-lang bowed politely, but before any sort of interesting small talk about how the southern snake demon tribes could begin, he looked up curiously behind Shen Yuan.

“Cousin,” said Luo Binghe—who scared the shit out of Shen Yuan by appearing somehow instantaneously behind him when he could’ve sworn he was halfway across the market half a second ago.

Shen Yuan held his hand to his chest, trying to slow his racing heartbeat when that registered. He threw his head back to stare at Luo Binghe and then back to Zhuzhi-lang in abject confusion. “Cousin?”

Luo Binghe’s smile was tight and at some point his hand had drifted to Shen Yuan’s shoulder. “I was not aware Zhuzhi-lang came so far for herbs. Surely there are herbalists in the southern territories who might cater to your needs.”

Zhuzhi-lang’s snake-like eyes blinked one set of scaled eyelids and then the other more human one. “Herbalist Shen acquires several types of venom in exchange for goods. This humble one also owes them a debt for providing the necessary Monkshood root to assist several members of the tribe who were struggling during a spread of disease that was preventing shedding season.”
“You don’t owe me a debt,” Shen Yuan said automatically. If anything the venom he provided was more than enough to pay it. It wasn’t like Shen Yuan had any other contacts in the southern snake tribes. He did know another Heavenly Demon—the only other Heavenly Demon, so this was a… strange coincidence.

“Why not inquire with your familial relations?” Luo Binghe asked, eye contact between him and Zhuzhi-lang a bit too intense to be between. “Surely, the palace could have provided the necessary items.”

“There was a time constraint,” Zhuzhi-lang said, politely. “This humble one apologies if he gave offense.” He paused. “Should I refer to Cousin by his title or is he not—” Zhuzhi-lang gestured to his own forehead. Where there was what Shen Yuan was now realizing was an actual zuiyin and not the in-vogue fashion of demonkind to paint one.

“Cousin is fine,” Luo Binghe said, his smile was extremely threatening, “after all we’re family.”

The terse standoff of severe eye contact was getting to be a bit much. Shen Yuan eased out from under Luo Binghe’s shoulder and stood, clearing his throat. “I think Cactus Face might have some seasonal treats Zhuzhi-lang enjoyed last time, if he wanted to escape the incredibly awkward situation so I could yell at his cousin.”

Zhuzhi-lang smiled very small and Shen Yuan could practically hear Luo Binghe’s nostril’s flaring.

"Steal it, steal it," said Tianglang-Jun. "We're all demons--why fuss about something like this? Besides, he's only your younger cousin. What are you afraid of? The last lord of the Mobei clan even openly stole his younger brother's official wife."

I did the math and Liu Qingge'd be like late 20s if he reincarnated in PIDW so my brain can get its easteregg liushen in and torment Bingge at the same time
“Do you have to look so grumpy?” Shen Yuan asked Luo Binghe. “It’s not going to kill you to get help.”

Luo Binghe gave him a pleasant and completely fake smile. “Does this please Shen Yuan?”

“It makes me want to pinch you, but you’re not trying to impress me,” Shen Yuan said and turned back around as Yi Xieren forcefully reentered the room.

“They said come to the back,” Yi Xieren said, and gestured with his head. He held out a small Sand-Rock Wyrm leather bag. “You left this last time.”

Shen Yuan laughed at himself and took it, smiling up at Yi Xieran. “Thank you! That’s like the fourth time I’ve dropped it here. I suppose, Yi-er should start charging me for return services.”

Yi Xieran shrugged him off, but his ears went a little red. He was so easy to tease. Shen Yuan wasn't sure how old he was, but it couldn’t have been more than his late twenties.

Shen Yuan felt Luo Binghe walking close enough he could feel him brushing his back as they went into the back to the office that Wind Keeper usually stayed in. He glanced behind him and me Luo Binghe’s irritated looking face before he smiled that fake smile again.

Shen Yuan narrowed his eyes at him, wondering what that was about, but left it alone and continued on into the room.

almost ran into a block when I thought about how it'd be too coincidental for them to accidentally run into each other and then I remember its bingge so he just broke into shen yuan's house and started cooking without asking
He undid his hair, setting aside the hair crown on a random counter for tomorrow Shen Yuan’s problem and scratched the roots, sighing in relief as it laid down around his shoulders. He almost walked past his kitchen to go into the bedroom, completely missing the emperor who was somehow cooking in it.

“Shen Yuan mentioned he liked this lord’s cooking,” Luo Binghe said, without turning around.

“Did Shen Yuan also happen to mention he liked when this lord didn’t break into his house?” Shen Yuan asked, crossing his arms over his chest.

“The door was unlocked,” Luo Binghe said and did something with the pan he was using to fry something that of course smelled fantastic.

“No, it wasn’t,” Shen Yuan said. Though it was when he came in. He hadn’t made note of that, which was odd. It wasn’t like there was a high crime rate in the village, but still.

Luo Binghe glanced briefly over his shoulder. “Is Shen Yuan calling this lord a liar?”

“Yes,” Shen Yuan said without hesitating and was truly annoyed at how much he enjoyed Binghe’s responding smile before he turned back to his cooking.

Briefly he debated making a bigger fuss about this. It was rude and not a standard he wanted to set. He also didn’t want to think about being glad to see him. Ugh.

“How long is it going to take?” Shen Yuan asked.

“Another quarter shichen or so. Shen Yuan still has time to clean up if he’d like.”

Shen Yuan might’ve taken that personally if even his non-demonic sense of smell could still catch Wooly Bear-Goat perfume all over him. One of Sweet Heat’s many siblings had wanted to give an updated tour of the flock.

I love writing Bing-ge wives T_T esp interacting with Shen Yuan.
“You look well,” Ning Yingying said, politely.

“Is it just the tits or did you do the bottom layer too?” Sha Hualing asked at the same time.

“Sha Hualing!” Ning Yingying scolded.

She just laughed, unrepentant. “Like you weren’t wondering.”

Shen Yuan’s face felt hot, he used that as the excuse for walking a little faster so they could get to the nice stream at the midpoint of the path a little sooner. He stopped when they got there and turned around. Taking a steadying breath, Shen Yuan smiled, a little awkwardly. “You said you had something to talk about?”

Sha Hualing punched him in the arm, hard. “That’s for not saying goodbye, A-Jie. You could’ve at least left a bloody kidney for me.”

“Mine or someone else’s?” Shen Yuan asked automatically and Sha Hualing grinned at him.

Ning Yingying did not roll her eyes, but definitely stared at something high up (which were most things for her). “We’re both happy to see that you’re well, Shen Yuan. A-Yan would’ve come as also, but she’s… preoccupied with some matters of state.”

Sha Hualing’s laugh regarding that was not reassuring.

“I…I’m flattered,” Shen Yuan said. “I didn’t… I mean…”

“You assumed that because A-Luo didn’t notice, none of us would either?” Ning Yingying asked, but her smile was kind.

“No one—” Shen Yuan caught himself before saying ‘ratted me out’ even though Sha Hualing probably would’ve enjoyed that. He cleared his throat. “As no one reported it to the emperor, I assumed it wasn’t notable.”

He’d kind of been counting on that actually.

“We assumed he knew and was being a bitch about it,” Sha Hualing said.Ning Yingying tapped her fingers on the table and then sighed and picked her up cup. “Go ahead,” she told Sha Hualing. “It’ll be more efficient if you recount it.”

Sha Hualing paused, stretching out the dramatics and then flashed a toothy grin. “A-Jie must’ve cut his balls off, because Junshang came back like he was missing them.”

“I regretted that faster than I expected,” Ning Yingying said, tiredly. “She means that A-Luo had been a little discontent, but after he returned from seeing you, he was withdrawn, sullen, and prone to random fits of violence. I haven’t seen him like that in a long time.”

“They weren’t random fits of violence,” Sha Hualing said.

“Was Shen Yuan aware that someone had taken his name out of the emperor’s tablets?”

“Eventually,” Shen Yuan said, with a disgruntled shrug. It had been long enough that there was no point in getting fussed over it.

“A-Luo did not know that,” Ning Yingying said, “he assumed,” she sounded annoyed when she said that, “without confirming with anyone, that Shen Yuan had taken his name off due to lack of desire for his company.”

“Men,” Sha Hualing said with a disgusted snort as she sipped her tea. She eyed Shen Yuan carefully. “Is that insulting to you or…”

Shen Yuan sighed, but he also laughed. It was shaky, but loosed some of the tension he was feeling. “They removed my name from the rotational roster as well.”

“They might have done that after A-Luo noticed the tablet missing,” Ning Yingying said. “Some of the wives prefer to abstain, though it’s never a surprise.” She huffed, in definite annoyance and then sipped at her own tea.

“What?” Shen Yuan really couldn’t buy that. “There are wives who abstain? Who don’t want to sleep with Luo Binghe?”

Ning Yingying and Sha Hualing shared a look

the system coming alive after shen yuan has already ruined his role as disposable wife #17 by meeting and wifebeaming binghe too early: (。ᵕ °ㅁ° ).ᐟ.ᐟ.ᐟ
“I think your manual’s wrong,” Song Yangjie said, frowning at it.

They’d been in his room for ages now going back and forth between the one Song Yangjie had and the one Binghe brought with him. It was beaten up and he’d clearly read through it a lot even if he said it was still hard for him. And Binghe’d had no trouble at all when he tried Song Yangjie’s and that one was way less fancy. It came from the printing house that sold to wandering cultivators not a cultivation sect.

“I don’t…it’s wrong?” Binghe asked, but it sounded more like he didn’t want to believe it but he already kinda did.

Song Yangjie nodded and then pointed to one of the pages. “This breathing pattern doesn’t match how the anatomy looks for veins on Yang Gorillas.”

Binghe scrunched up his face. “What?”

Song Yangjie laughed and got up. “Hold on.” He quickly browsed through his bookshelf and pulled out the right book. It was heavy but he managed and plopped it on the floor in front of Binghe. “Yang Gorillas are the closest species to humans in terms of internal systems like anatomy,” Song Yangjie said, flipping to the right page to compare. “And spiritual veins are like regular veins sorta, but for energy. So if that’s wrong, the other stuff probably is too.”

Binghe looked a little distraught. Song Yangjie gave his shoulder a reassuring pat. “It’s probably a misprint. That happens sometimes.”

Binghe stared at his manual. His eyes were dark and his fists were clenched at his side. Song Yangjie couldn’t tell if he looked angry or sad, but both of those were unacceptable things for his new friend to feel!

He grabbed his own cultivation manual and placed it Binghe’s lap. “You can have mine,” he said.

Binghe looked startled, which was kind of better. He stared at the manual and then back at Song Yangjie and shook his head. “No, no. I can’t—”“Please, Binghe! I can always get another one,” Song Yangjie said. “I doubt I study half as much as Binghe does anyway. You deserve a good manual. Not a misprint.”

Binghe stared at him again. He seemed overwhelmed. “I don’t think… they’ll think I stole it.”

Song Yangjie snorted. “Oh, well that’s easy to fix.” He took the book back and then dug his thumb into the binding and stripped the cover, laughing at Binghe’s gasp. Song Yangjie did the same to Binghe’s manual and switched the insides. “I don’t have binding glue in my room, but that’s like… super easy to find. They have to use them all the time at the printing houses and A-Die likes to test them out or make his own books sometimes. I’ve been practicing for when I get to write my own bestiary.”

Binghe was breathing kind of quickly and hard, but he smiled after a moment, so he was probably okay. “Gege wants to write a bestiary?”

“Mhmm!” Song Yangjie said, grinning. “I need to read more of the ones already written first, since I don’t want to write something someone else already did, but when I get old enough I’m going to explore and find all sorts of different beasts and monsters. Probably plants too. Did you know there are plants in the Demon Realm that eat people?”

Binghe was making that scrunched face again. “Gege sounds excited that it eats people.”

“It’s exciting if you’re not the people,” Song Yangjie said and couldn’t help giggle after. “I only mean that it’s interesting and different. I like learning about that kind of stuff. Even if I don't want to have one in the garden. ‘sides it’s probably a good idea to know what to avoid.”

“That’s true,” Binghe said, thoughtfully. His mouth pulled up in a smile that Song Yangjie really liked, only half of it lifted, but he could tell it meant Binghe was happy. “Can Gege show me his other bestiaries then?”

Song Yangjie nodded and had to reign in his excitement not to jump up too fast as he went to get them.

Shen Yuan was eating a very delicious breakfast that he had an appetite for in the smallish high table by the kitchen where he’d watching Binghe cook. He was about to ask Luo Binghe if he had personal experience with the fields, when the door was kicked open.

That was such a common occurrence, Shen Yuan usually didn’t even flinch. This time he fell out of his chair and threw the chair in front of him, gripping it defensively.

Luo Binghe had a kitchen knife held up and was in front of the table, which was a fairly fast reaction given how quickly Liu Qingge had entered.

Hysterical laughter bubbled up again and Shen Yuan pulled his knees up to rest his head on them and try and smother it. It was only minimally effective and by then Liu Qingge was at his side looking at him with concern and helping him up.

Shen Yuan sighed. He did not want to talk about this, but he couldn’t—

“You have to open the door normally once in a while,” Shen Yuan said, leaning his weight into Liu Qingge’s chest. It felt very nice at the moment.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing right this second,” Shen Yuan said. He could at least put it off maybe. He wondered if it would be worse if he begged Lai Wen or Binghe to tell Liu Qingge so that Shen Yuan didn’t have to recap the horror show. That was probably too immature and selfish for him to attempt, even if it was tempting.

Liu Qingge seemed to at least accept his answer even if Shen Yuan could practically feel his distrust of it. He cupped the back of Shen Yuan’s head and held him closer.

I wanna finish this by my bday so bad but I also don't want to rush it and miss out on shen yuan raking bingge though the coals properly like he deserves
It didn't even bother Shen Yuan to say that out loud. That was a steadying thought. The recurrent pain now was like a trauma flashback. It would pass much more easily once Luo Binghe left.

If he did. Judging by the choked noise he made, it sounded like it was not going to be that easy. “That’s not true,” Binghe said. “That has never been true.”

Shen Yuan didn’t even glare, he just leveled an unimpressed look at him. “You didn’t even recognize me.” Until he’d been pissed and yelling, which… what the fuck was that about? Song Yangjie never got pissed and yelled at him. The System would’ve fried her brain for the OOC alone.

Luo Binghe’s jaw shifted and he looked away. “I wasn’t expecting to see my wife here.”

“Any of your current ones anyway,” Shen Yuan said, dryly.

“That does include you,” Luo Binghe said, shortly. That dig had definitely gotten to him. “I certainly would’ve known you’d left if there’d been any sort of divorce request or even a written goodbye.”

“Your defense is that I didn’t leave a note?” Shen Yuan asked. Inappropriate laughter was on the verge of bubbling up his chest in a far different way than it had earlier.

“No,” Luo Binghe said, petulant. Still a big baby. “I’m not…defending myself. I’m still trying to understand how—”

“How the person you think you are, the just and fair person who never leaves a debt unpaid, could forget someone they married so easily?” Shen Yuan guessed.

Luo Binghe winced at that and grimaced. “I deserved that.” He rubbed his hand over his face before dropping it with a sigh. “I suppose it doesn’t do much to defend my character if I said I was specifically trying to understand how I could forget you and not… just anyone I married.”

“Spewing bullshit doesn’t tend to defend someone’s character, yeah,” Shen Yuan said, pressing the bruises on his knuckles instead of punching something again.

happy wip wednesday, news at eleven, local emperor bingge accidentally sounds like he's apologizing for ignoring a misplaced wife and ends up breaking shen yuan's brain instead, sounds of screaming and stabbing were heard shortly after
“There were many paths open to me and many roads taken to accomplish my goals,” Luo Binghe said. “I’ve long assumed that my journey was the right way and the only way, but I met… I saw something that changed that. It made me think about some of my choices and there have been regrets.”

Shen Yuan shifted on his feet. Luo Binghe didn’t look at him, but he couldn’t turn his eyes away.

“There were people that maybe if I’d treated differently,” Luo Binghe said, struggling with himself as he did so, like the words needed to be torn out of him. “If I’d approached the situation from another angle or done something different maybe they’d…” He sighed trailing off and stared at his reflection again before scowling and turning the bronze mirror face down on the table. “It doesn’t matter in the end, I suppose. The possibility of what could have been doesn’t change what happened or what I did.”

“It…” Shen Yuan found himself taking a step forward, his arms falling by his sides at some point His heart was lodged in his throat. "You don’t know that. Maybe talking to them about how you feel might still… a sincere apology can go a long way. If there’s someone you hurt, they at least deserve that.”

Luo Binghe laughed once, completely without humor. “Difficult to do with Shen Qingqiu dead.”

Shen Yuan blinked at him, certain he’d heard incorrectly.

Luo Binghe didn’t seem to notice Shen Yuan’s sudden potential stroke and continued while glaring at the wall nearest him. “He had to be different. He was so different. I can’t—I never got an answer out of him. There’s no way to be sure that coming at it from a different angle—asking him to forgive—”

“Shen Qingqiu?” Shen Yuan said in a voice that felt like it was coming from somewhere above him. He was floating out his body and his body was screaming. “Shen Qingqiu?”

Gongyi Xiao shook his head. His hands were resting in fists on his lap and he hadn’t poured himself any tea. “I came to see if you were all right… after yesterday.”

Shen Yuan took a long sip of tea, feeling the caffeine mix with the dread from his statement. “Why?”

Gongyi Xiao glanced around, leaned forward, and lowered his voice. “The emperor.”

“You—oh fuck,” Shen Yuan put his cup down. He wasn’t out of it enough not to do the math on that one. The only way Gongyi Xiao would’ve put together that Shen Yuan recognized Luo Binghe was if he knew who Shen Yuan was. “How the hell long have you known who I was?”

Gongyi Xiao shrugged, awkwardly. “… since I saw you outside of Huan Hua Palace again. You don’t really look that different. I assumed you didn’t wish to speak about it.”

“I don’t,” Shen Yuan agreed and rubbed his temple. “I don't even remember meeting you in at Huan Hua Palace.”

“The Little Palace Mistress singled you out a few times,” Gongyi Xiao said, almost apologetically. Shen Yuan felt bad for him if he was still feeling responsible for apologizing for her actions. After the way she’d cucked him, Gongyi Xiao had a free pass to at the very least let her dig her own grave.

He cleared his throat. “You… also were nice to some of the younger cultivators I taught. I saw you helping them in the library a few times.”

“Unbelievable,” Shen Yuan said, finishing off his cup and then pouring himself another. He was awake now out of pure irritation at least.

RIP Gongyi Xiao, I'm sorry I keep torturing you with almost this exact scenario of having the nerve to talk to Shen Yuan while Binghe can SEE YOU in fics lmao
At least he was stationed with people this time. “I have a little here, but I can make more if you want to come by later,” Shen Yuan said. “Get some dinner while you’re actually in town. You don't have to trudge back right away right?”

Gongyi Xiao seemed a little flushed—he really shouldn’t have been posted so directly in the desert with his apparent sensitivity to the sun.

“If Shen Yuan asks, I am certain—” Gongyi Xiao started and then was cut off as Luo Binghe somehow appeared out of nowhere and leaned back into the space like he was doing that morning.

“Did I hear you were with the Shui Yu outpost?” Luo Binghe asked.

Gongyi Xiao was an extremely bad liar and might’ve had the worst pokerface in his life. His head snapped quickly to stare at the emperor of the three realms and the worst disguise imaginable. “Y…”

“Zhang Wen is after a very expensive courting gift,” Shen Yuan said, saving him from having to stumble through an embarrassing game of pretend.

Luo Binghe smiled—it didn’t even remotely reach his eyes. It was a shame it would be too dangerous to send Sweet Heat to bite him as a distraction.

“Right. That’s…well if… Cultivator Zhang? Needs any assistance…this Gongyi Xiao would be happy to help,” Gongyi Xiao said, awkwardly.

“Shen Yuan said it was dangerous for human cultivators to traverse that area,” Luo Binghe said, suddenly informal.

Shen Yuan felt his eye twitch. “Mhm, which was why I recommended the Lu Zhou Clan,” he said. “That are on the other side of the market.”

“They weren’t very agreeable with this one,” Luo Binghe said, putting on a fake pout worse than Sweet Heat’s earlier. “I think they dislike humans.”“They get along with me just fine,” Shen Yuan said, “Gongyi Xiao too. A little too well,” he added, lips twitching. “Don’t buy another one of those ugly weiqi boards, hm?”

“I’ll keep that in mind,” Gongyi Xiao said, weakly. He kept glancing surreptitiously at Luo Binghe and then back in Shen Yuan’s direction. Poor bastard wouldn't have lasted a day if he’d been put on any sort of assignment that required subterfuge.

“Also,” Shen Yuan could not help adding, because deep in his heart he was a petty bitch. “I mentioned Zhang Wen should contact the Lu Zhou Clan, because I haven't heard of him before. His skills are unknown. I’m certain a talented cultivator like Gongyi Xiao could manage fine in the Shui Yu Desert.”

There was a thrill that ran up Shen Yuan’s spine when Luo Binghe shifted his jaw in clear, visible annoyance. “Then again his gifting ideas seem to lean on the more practical side,” Shen Yuan added, to dig it in. He smiled at Gongyi Xiao, friendly and completely ignoring the angry half-demon sulking over his toy being taken from him glare out of the corner of eye. “As I said, come by later and I’ll make you up a fresh batch.”

Gongyi Xiao was not quite as gifted at ignoring the full irritation of the emperor directly pointed at him. He still managed a mostly sincere smile at Shen Yuan before it fled when he glanced in Luo Binghe’s direction. Then he bowed and quietly excused himself.

bingge's inner monologue all about his switch between worlds and navel gazing about his decisions and life so far, clinging to a random dude who wouldn't give him the proper attention IN DISGUISE sy, his ex-wife he doesn't recognize: i am going to be so petty it will snap xin mo in half
There was a certain feeling Shen Yan was having watching ‘Zhang Wen’ pick at the serving of pulled noodles in front of him.

The feeling was irritation.

Of course Binghe’s noodles would be better! Shen Yuan knew that. Luo Binghe knew that. But that didn’t mean the noodles were inedible! Besides considering ‘Zhang Wen’ had just met Shen Yuan, there was no reason for the insecure little tantrum Shen Yuan knew was going through his head.

Shen Yuan slurped his noodles loudly like the petty bitch he was.

Luo Binghe’s eye twitched, but he didn’t comment on it.

It was amazing how quickly Shen Yuan had shifted from abject terror to annoyance. He’d always been pretty adaptable, however, it was how he’d survived. “So what’s the curse you’re trying to clear?” Shen Yuan asked. He had zero interest in finding out who it was for, but surely they’d get that curse cleared up and make their way to find a spot in the endless boredom of the harem soon enough.

Shen Yuan tried not to scowl at his noodles as he began to feeling sympathy rather than petty bitterness for the nth wife of Emperor Luo.

“Herbalist Shen seems very certain that is the reason, this one is searching it out,” Luo Binghe said, finally taking a bite of his own meal. He looked like he was chewing sawdust. It took every ounce of strength Shen Yuan had not to roll his eyes.

Shen Yuan took a not so elegant slurp of his tea. “Fine, enlighten this old man. What is Zhang Wen after an extremely rare shell from a Crystal Phoenix-Raven egg for?”“It's a gift,” Luo Binghe said about a rare dangerous artifact that probably hundreds of men had died trying to retrieve. “For an accord.”

Great. It was a courting gift. Not even breaking a curse. Shen Yuan took another long drink of his tea and focused on eating so he wouldn’t say the millions of things that came to mind. Song Yangjie would’ve been hitting OOC restrictions to bitch about it anyway. Who cared about wife after wife that didn’t seem to matter and never filled the endless void of yearning that Luo Binghe never took the time to actually try and fill?

It was not his problem. It had never been his problem. Still…

“A nice jade hairpin is probably less dangerous,” Shen Yuan said, going back to his noodles.

Luo Binghe’s lips twitched slightly. It was like he might remember how to laugh. Shen Yuan was honestly glad he didn’t. He didn’t think he could handle that on top of everything else. Maybe in another ten years he could manage hearing Binghe’s carefree laugh again—if it was ever that. Could've all been bullshit.

It was probably all bullshit.

I know I said I'd touch grass, but I what if I started working on divorcee binggeyuan where the emperor has not noticed his 17th wife is missing for like a decade and why this random herbalist dude not immediately charmed by him???
“Zhang Wen,” Shen Yuan said politely.

Luo Binghe very briefly showed his irritation—probably not enough for someone who didn’t know him well to notice. The easy smile he had as he matched Shen Yuan’s pace was more of the genial bullshittery he’d excelled in over the years. “Herbalist Shen,” Luo Binghe said. “Apologies for interrupting your… walk, but I did hope to gain some insight about my search for the Crystal Phoenix-Raven nesting grounds? It’s rather urgent.”

“Shui Yu Desert,” Shen Yuan said, keeping his pace and focusing ahead rather than the way Luo Binghe’s hair was tied more loosely than normal. There wasn’t even any tension where he had it secured. Shen Yuan wondered wish wife brushed it out for him. She did a good job. Hopefully he paid attention to her for more than grooming.

“Pardon?”

Shen Yuan sighed. “The Crystal Phoenix-Raven’s nesting grounds is in an Oasis in the Shui Yu Desert.”

“No warnings on taking on such a dangerous creature?” Luo Binghe asked. “Or curiosity as to why this one is searching for it?”

Shen Yuan snorted, unable to help himself. “If you’re going directly for the creatures and not trying to sneak into the nest, none of my advice will help except: don’t. And I’m assuming you want the eggshell for the qi purifying proprieties for a nasty curse.”

Wife plots were not his problem anymore.
“Herbalist Shen seems very knowledgable,” Luo Binghe said, making it sound like half an insult.

“Mm.” Shen Yuan sighed in relief as he noticed familiar faces nearing the restaurant where he spent almost every evening. “If that’s all?”

Luo Binghe’s arm crossed his chest, reaching for the door and effectively blocking Shen Yuan off from reaching for it himself. It also put him at an angle where they were half embracing. It was either seductive or intimidating and given how he clearly didn’t recognize Shen Yuan, it was probably the latter.

“Does Herbalist Shen like this restaurant?”

Shen Yuan did not think about Luo Binghe’s cooking. He did not think about how congee tasted flat and sometime he stabbed a perfectly bao out of spite with a chopstick because they couldn’t match up.

“It’s the best in town,” Shen Yuan said, “If Zhang Wen is looking.” It was also the only place in town unless you sidled up to one of the aunties and got dragged into a homemade meal. That happened at least once a week for Shen Yuan. He was certain Luo Binghe could accomplish as much by merely smiling a little in the market tomorrow.

“Zhang Wen would like to treat Herbalist Shen,” Luo Binghe said, “for his assistance.”

He sounded… actually annoyed. Oh fuck, Shen Yuan had accidentally triggered his insecure bitch mode, hadn’t he? You’re emperor of the fucking realms for crying out loud! Grow up! One random old man herbalist not liking you on sight doesn’t mean you’re incapable of receiving unconditional affection!

you'd think having a locked fic w/ only registered accounts would avoid weird rude confusing comments (there are no other ships/cheating in this fic)
Bro how is he going to be whoring around and then get jealous at a dog. Binghe would never sleep with others when he's already in love I refuse to believe it 🪬

Also could you please tag this to include the other ships with binghe present?

Chapter 9: Lily (百合花): Purity, innocence
Summary:

On what is supposed to be a simple business trip and meeting with an old friend, Shen Yuan discovers the nefarious background workings of the Merry Lotus Blossom and how much more dangerous those ‘buy out’ offers have been.

(or, not the kind of blast from the past zhan yuan wanted)

Lai Wen sighed. “I can’t even hope that the new Head Disciple falls into a pile of Winking Windflowers, since he’ll have a line out the door of volunteers to treat it.”

Shen Yuan couldn’t help stiffen a little awkwardly at the thought of Lai Wen in Luo Binghe’s harem. He knew they were the same age, but… that was precisely why it felt weird. Plus it would be like Binghe dating Shen Yuan’s meimei which was—all of it was weird.

“You met him?” Shen Yuan asked.

Lai Wen shook her head. “Second hand details from Rong-er and plenty of looks now that he’s out and about in the sect.” She fanned herself over dramatically. “I could swoon.”

Shen Yuan’s discomfort was topped by his amusement. He snorted. “I don't think anyone would buy you swooning.”

“Yes, I am not quite as delicate as Shifu,” Lai Wen said with a wicked smile, laughing when Shen Yuan smacked her arm.

“I am not delicate,” Shen Yuan said. He had actually gained some muscle definition since he started dating a man whose favorite interest was getting bruised up during sword training.

Lai Wen laughed at him. “You’d still swoon at Head Disciple Luo.”

“I can assure you I would not,” Shen Yuan said, snorting. “I knew him when he was a little bun.”

Binghe certainly wasn’t anymore, but it was hard not to still see that little bun and want to protect him. It was kind of ridiculous when Shen Yuan let himself think about how he wanted to protect the protagonist. Luo Binghe’s plot armor should have him sailing through any trouble at this point in the story.

glad this wasn't shen yuan pov so I didn't even have to pretend he was going to actually resist giving in almost immediately to binghe
Luo Binghe cupped his hands and bowed. “This disciple has learned more from Shen Yuan in less than a year than he has learned his entire time on Qing Jing Peak. Please consider being my shizun.”

“I can’t teach you Qing Jing sword forms,” Shen Yuan said after an excruciating pause.

Luo Binghe looked up at him, hopefully. “This disciple would be pleased to learn how to fight like Shizun.”

“I didn’t say yes yet!” Shen Yuan objected and then groaned when Luo Binghe beamed at him. “I—Binghe, let me at least check to see if that’s a thing I’m even allowed to do first.”

Luo Binghe nodded, eagerly. His heart pounding in chest. “This disciple is certain that Shizun will be able to find the right ‘loophole’ as he likes to put it to make it so.”

Shen Yuan scoffed and pulled his fan off his hip to smack Luo Binghe on the head with it. It was so light and non-threatening even when it landed harder than normal. “Absolutely shameless. You’re going to be disappointed.”

“This disciple doubts that,” Luo Binghe said.

Shen Yuan—Shizun rolled his eyes and sighed in defeat.

Luo Binghe skipped along side him the rest of the day until he got whacked a few more times with the fan.

maybe it's my manifesto on how people can handle the same trauma differently actually
Luo Binghe couldn’t pretend he didn’t mean to eavesdrop once Shizun had caught sight of them and Shen Yuan had told him to wait by the steps for him. He hunkered into the nearest shadow, hoping no one like Ming Fan would notice him (or also Ning-shijie—she had a way of getting him caught up in more trouble when he was already in deep).

“You swore you wouldn’t take anymore disciples after the last one,” Shen Yuan said.

“I don’t recall that,” Shizun said, icily as if to chill the heat from Shen Yuan’s tone.

“Bullshit,” Shen Yuan snapped. “We talked about this before I left!” There was a thumping noise Luo Binghe couldn’t identify, the cadence of it made him think maybe it was stomping feet or someone was slamming their fist onto one of the walls. “You agreed with me!”

“You left!” Shizun said, sharply. “Any agreements left with you. You stayed away long enough I’ve had several disciples since.”

Luo Binghe flinched as the next noise startled him—that was definitely something being thrown into a wall. It obfuscated whatever Shen Yuan’s response was—all Luo Binghe caught was the anger in his voice.

“They can’t truly have that much potential if they’re weak enough to be run off like scurrying rats,” Shizun replied. “You spend so much time with beasts, you're starting to hallucinate the humanity in them.

“Wow, didn’t think I’d ever hear Qiu Jianluo again, but he—” Shen Yuan was cut off by the familiar sound of flesh hitting flesh.

One of them made a strangled noise, almost like pain.

Shen Yuan—Luo Binghe was fairly certain—chuckled, humorless. “You’re going to have to hit harder than that if you want me to feel him again too. Or does that not work since I’m big enough to fight back now?”

 Chapter 10: Sex-Pollen Wife Plot
Summary:

After the Bing-ge possession incident, Luo Binghe is avoiding Shen Yuan. Shen Yuan assumes this is due to Binghe’s disinterest in him and feeling violated by possession. An Airplane wife plot indicates otherwise.

(or, shen yuan always carries his fuck-or-die kit)

“Yuan-shixiong?” Ming Fan asked as Shen Yuan was practicing a couple of tunes on the erhu before class.

“Mm?”

“Ah, are you… okay?” Ming Fan asked.

Shen Yuan looked up, confused. Then noticed half the class was filled with disciples who looked like they were about to cry.

“Please play more, Shixiong,” one of them said. “It’s so tragically beautiful!”

“You can feel the heartache.”

“I—I’m fine,” Shen Yuan said, trying to remember any prior life pop song he could butcher to play something upbeat.

“They are… sad,” Ming Fan admitted.

Shen Yuan cleared his throat and could only remember the theme song to Final Fantasy, which seemed to have mixed results.

Chapter 8: Hibiscus (芙蓉花): Delicate beauty, wealth, fame
Summary:

Fallout from the defeat of another legendary creature means the cat is out of the bag regarding Luo Binghe’s still alive secret. It all depends now on whether or not his old Shizun feels like disclosing the other information he knows.

(or, have an important for the plot transition chapter)

“Who was the singular attacker?” Shen Qingqiu asked, his voice even, but his silence during the discussion without his usual pointed indifference a little suspicious.

“The Head Disciple from Huan Hua Palace,” Kang Wu said.

“Gongyi Xiao did get second place in the Immortal Alliance Conference that went to hell,” murmured Zhong Qingzu.

“No, it was someone else,” Kang Wu said, “Luo Binghe.”

Most of the Peak Lords seemed not to have any reaction to that information. Mu Qingfang frowned thoughtfully, likely trying to remember if it was familiar. Liu Qingge met Liu Mingyan’s eyes again and his sister was inscrutable, but clearly taking it all in.

“Zheng Yang,” Wei Qingwei said, nodding, noting the boy by his sword. He looked at Shen Qingqiu. “Didn’t he die at the Immortal Alliance Conference?”

“This master never said that,” Shen Qingqiu said, evenly.

Even Yue Qingyuan was looking at Shen Qingqiu now, though the Qing Jing Peak Lord was still burning his eyes into Liu Qingge’s side for some reason.

“You never reported him either,” Qi Qingqi said. “I recall checking the list of dead, as he was friends with a few of my disciples.”

Liu Qingge’s sister glanced away from the table, but made no other reaction.

wip wednesday of the bzp disciple au--sure wasn't going into this expecting shang qinghua to adopt shen yuan against his will and mobei-jun I think try to be his new stepdad, but here we are!
“Demonic snow leopards are interesting,” Shen Yuan said, trying to think of something local to where he assumed they were. “Or at least what I’ve read, which isn’t much. There aren’t a lot of bestiary entries in the books I have. I know non-demonic snow leopards are reclusive, so that—”

Mobei-jun had stood up and then disappeared.

“Shit, shit, shit, sorry, mini-bro!” Shang Qinghua said the second it happened. “We were talking and I think I said how great it was you were already going on night hunts and okay maybe trying to brag a little and then he said he wanted to meet you and I thought he meant organize it, but he did—” Shang Qinghua gestured to the empty hair. “—that!”

“Is he going to kill me?” Shen Yuan asked, rounding on him. “I don’t think demon warlords generally socialize with cultivators, Airplane!”

“He liked hearing about you?” Shang Qinghua said, grimacing. It wasn’t very reassuring if that was what he was going for.

“Why were you talking about me in the first place?” Shen Yuan’s voice was definitely rising and so was his panic. He punched Shang Qinghua in the arm.

“Sometimes my king asks questions!” Shang Qinghua said, flinching back from Shen Yuan holding up his fist again. “Also sometimes I fill the silence… it’s habit. I don’t think he wants to kill you. He wouldn’t have a dramatic villain lunch about it if he did. Very not his style. I guess it’s like bring your kid to work day?”

“I am not your kid!” Shen Yuan objected. “I’m your contemporary.”

Shang Qinghua looked at him like he might pinch his cheeks or something. Shen Yuan punched in the arm again.

“Fuck, mini-bro!” Shang Qinghua rubbed his arm. “Same spot? What are they even feeding on you on Bai Zhan?”

“Shouldn’t you know, Dad,” Shen Yuan growled. It didn’t have the correct effect because Shang Qinghua seemed emotional like he’d taken it without the dripping sarcasm.

Chapter 9: Fake Dating and Spiritual Encounters
Summary:

Life after the IAC not ending in disaster has gone really well, but nothing lasts forever. Shen Yuan gets a spiritual awakening when he and Luo Binghe have to play a married couple to solve a mystery.

(or, shen yuan wife beams across dimensions)

Shen Yuan fanned himself to keep from balking. “Why don’t you be the wife if you’re so sure about it?”

Luo Binghe didn’t seem to like that idea, he was scowling at even the concept of having to pretend to be married to Geng Lim which was admittedly fair.

“Obviously, you and Luo-shixiong have to do it,” Geng Lim said, somehow managing to convey that Shen Yuan was an idiot for thinking otherwise. “You’ll be more believable.”

“You are comfortable enough together for it to look sincere,” Su Jiang agreed, which was true.

“Yuan-ge,” Luo Binghe said, earnestly. “If you’re uncomfortable with it, I can be the wife.”

Shen Yuan practically guffawed at the thought. No, no. If they were actually going to do this, no way would Luo Binghe be the wife. “Binghe, no one is going to buy that.”

Luo Binghe’s shoulders dropped and he pouted a little. “Why not?”

Shen Yuan pressed the fan against his face and did not scream. “Because—look at you!”

Luo Binghe looked down at himself and then back up again in confusion.

Shen Yuan was on the cusp of reassuring Binghe that he was pretty enough to be a wife but the masculine energy he naturally walked around with as a stallion protagonist (which he now looked like) would never make it believable.

His face felt a little hot and he instead said, “I’ll be the wife.”

The magistrate’s daughter understandably stomped off and didn’t come back to serve them any additional refreshments.

shen yuan discovers the horrors of bai zhan peak's "library"
“You okay, Zhan-shidi?” Quan Lijun a nebulous senior-junior that Shen Yuan was pretty sure wasn’t much older than himself asked.

Shen Yuan was still staring at the sad little stack of books in the supply closet. “This… is a joke, right?”

“Well yeah,” Qual Lijun said. “We don’t have a library, but if you need a new cultivation manual or—some of the newer disciples have to learn literacy so An Ding drops off some crap. That’s the left pile.”

Bai Zhan Peak didn't have a library. That was fine. It wasn’t like every other peak did or anything. Zhan Yuan couldn’t have known that—and Shen Yuan wasn’t entirely sure. It was a mere fact in PIDW, what did that mean in this real living universe? Maybe none of the peaks had libraries. Maybe…

“What about different marital styles?” Shen Yuan asked. “We all… learn from practice?”

“Physical cultivation can’t be done from a book,” Qual Lijun said, scoffing.

Shen Yuan was absolutely certain that was wrong, but didn't argue with him. He was too sore to argue. He was…

Bai Zhan Peak didn't have a library.

“We can… get off-peak at some point, right?” Shen Yuan asked, hearing the desperation in his voice.

Quan Lijun’s responding smile was a little scary. “Don’t worry shidi. We’ll have raids soon enough.”

That was definitely not what Shen Yuan meant.

Chapter 8: Immortal Alliance Conference
Summary:

Shen Yuan focuses on surviving (with Binghe) the seven days of the Immortal Alliance Conference, not realizing how close to his old brothel the location is.

(or, after the conference its the afterparty)

It took Shen Yuan until they were halfway to the conference—wondering why Shen Qingqiu invited him to ride in his carriage since he was reading and not pressing Shen Yuan to lose at weiqi—to register where the Immortal Alliance Conference was taking place.

Shen Yuan had been so focused on what might happen at the conference, he’d forgotten it was going to be held at Jue Di Gorge. Near Chung Ju Valley. Walking distance from the Merry Lotus Blossom.

He spent the rest of the ride staring out the window and trying and failing not to think about it.
