Our moon emerging from our shadow! #astrophotography 🔭
The moon glows red due to every sunset on earth being projected onto it as it passes through our shadow. A sliver of raw sunlight shows on the top left.

The wing of the Falcon. 🚀 #photograhy #rocket
The exhaust plume of a Falcon 9 launch streaks across the twilight sky in colors of blue and red, illuminated by the sunlight due to its height. Venus shines brightly front and center, and Saturn watches from below.

Lunar occultation of Mars 🌕🔭 January 13, 2025 #astronomy #astrophotography
The Full Wolf Moon takes up most of the frame, with the exception of a small red dot just above it. This is the planet Mars, shortly after reappearing from behind the moon. This is known as an occultation. Zooming in, Mars has some vaguely resolved details such as darker regions of soil and polar ice caps. And yes, the moon is out of focus. Don’t mention it.

Lunar transit This render is based off the famous image from NASA’s DSCVR EPIC camera, taken from a million miles away, with visible offset in the RGB channels on the moon. This is due to the moon’s motion. #blender #b3d 🔭
Render showing the moon crossing over the face of the earth, based on the image by NASA’s DSCVR EPIC camera. Zooming in, there is RGB offset on the moon. This is due to the camera taking pictures in the respective color channels with a considerable time gap between each image. When aligned in post, an offset becomes visible due to the moon moving throughout the imaging process.

Candle in the Dark Based on NASA photojournal image PIA08235, this render shows Titan’s atmospheric glow behind Saturn’s rings, with Enceladus peeking from the lower right. Original image processed by the Cassini imaging team. #blender #b3d
mighty Titan is backlit by the sun, causing light to be dispersed around the back of the moon and creating a ring of light that is strongly visible. Saturn’s rings take the foreground, crossing almost directly in front of Titan. On the moon’s lower right limb, Enceladus glows lightly.

So this AI nonsense showed up in my discovery feed. A thread on how to avoid AI-generated slop and mislabeled/misattributed/unattributed images and find real space images and astronomy content on Bluesky. 🔭
Screenshot of a post from the account Pictures @piictures.bsky.social. The post contains an AI-generated image that has dark swirling clouds with bright dots and a glowing center. It looks like a mix between a cinnamon bun and a hurricane seen from space at night. The post has 460 reposts 38 quotes and 7.8k likes (sigh).

Here is a video I made that loops between the Ha and Oiii emissions from the Orion Nebula. It is quite interesting to see how each filter leaves behind a set of filaments to make way for the other, and how it completely ignores the other wavelength. #astrophotography 🔭

The Orion Nebula shines magnificently in false color, with Hydrogen-alpha being represented by Reds, and Oiii being represented by Greens. Blues here are represented as a 50/50 mix of the two. The center core is blown out due to the sheer brightness and exposure length needed to get detail in the darker regions.
