Yesterday in 2013, the Falkland Islands Sovereignty Referendum took place. 🗳️ With a 92% turnout, Islanders exercised our right to self-determination and voted definitively (99.8%) to remain a UK Overseas Territory. 🇫🇰🇬🇧

On this day in 1690, Captain John Strong made the first recorded landing on the Falkland Islands at Bold Cove, near Port Howard, West Falkland. 🇫🇰 He named the channel between the two main islands Falkland Sound, after the sponsor of the expedition, the 5th Viscount Falkland. ⚓️

On this day in 1765, Commodore John Byron, aboard the frigate HMS Dolphin, took formal possession of the Falkland Islands for King George III and Great Britain. The Union Jack was then erected at the landing point on Saunders Island off West Falkland. 🇫🇰🇬🇧
