Authenticity is hard to beat. Will you be watching East of Eden on Netflix?

Jan @falcondalejan.bsky.social · 10/10/2026

Interesting tex-mex night with friends yesterday. Two declared they don't like art, and dug in when I challenged them. One told us about her sister's rented house where there's an app instead of a doorkey (horrific!) A third had never eaten a taco, an enchilada or refried beans and liked them all.

I hope attitudes have changed. The idea of writing a whole story around a female character who is simply born evil seems incredibly basic. It's like the idea of the witch or the whore from even older literature/culture. Patriarchal framing of what's likely to be wrong with a bad woman: her nature.

Anyway, much as I love this TV production for it's power and superb acting and visuals, it's put me off reading the book. Like I say though, I am only 3 episodes in. I'd love to know what anyone else thinks of Steinbeck, I have only read Cannery row. #TV #Netflix #TVChat

Also the sex scenes are a bit much if you have a big telly. Too close. Florence Pugh's boob was bigger than my head! My daughter (21) made the suggestion that there should be a cringe button all TV remotes to make sex scenes smaller for family viewing. I support this message 😬

Spoilers: it makes little sense for a girl of no more than 13 to decide that the way to get ahead in life is to seduce a teacher for whom she feels nothing. I haven't read the book but in the TV show there is a lack of corruption of Cathy (like there is in e.g. Dorian Grey), she is unexplained.

Jan @falcondalejan.bsky.social · 10/10/2026

East of Eden on Netflix - I am only 3 episodes in and it's a fantastic drama, but it's reminding me of how I struggle with Steinbeck and his era of male-writers-writing-women, generally. Cathy was written to be evil, but a grain of sympathy creeps in our modern hearts; Steinbeck might be surprised.

People have forgotten how to read instructions longer than 2 sentences. Universally true in cases where a friend or relative has sent them by WhatsApp.

Jeffrey Archer was an interesting person to say the least. He's been visible for decades since his sins were laid open and he was imprisoned, where others would have sunk into obscurity. I disliked his politics and more, but at 14, reading just one of his books fired my interest in politics forever.

Poured the boiling water into my husband's mug and then realised I'd forgotten the teabag. I added the teabag then microwaved it. As a Brit, I believe this behaviour qualifies me for USA citizenship. #DontTellHim

❌ Myth: The far right are “defending Christianity” against secularism, Islam and “cultural Marxism”. ✅ Fact: Church leaders aren’t having it. Churches Together in England said “the Cross and the Gospel must never be co-opted to support messages that breed hostility towards others”.

The new Sense and Sensibility film is properly good, a very satisfying emotional rollercoaster. Ok, the hair and choreography were a bit off, but the relationships and characters were BANG on. I had loved the Ang Lee version, this stands alone nicely as a different, and really good, production 👏

I'm so sorry. Tell them to look at Germany. I've seen a lot of videos online from people getting their stage 4 cancer treated there, funded privately. Some of them get TACE or TACP therapy, several recommend Dr Vogl, there's other stories online too. Also, much cheaper than USA. X

As many of you will know. my oldest friend's g/daughter was recently diagnosed with glioblastoma. It's inoperable; treatment options on the NHS are limited. So they're exploring other therapies too. If you're able & happy to contribute even £1, they (and I) would be so grateful. gofund.me/ea5c2d9ca

I hope it's not rude because I often just start "hi" and end "thanks". I think, if it's someone I know a bit, and I've not been in touch for ages, I might start "hope you are well". I hope I'm doing this right 🤔

I have been working my way through the sci fi stuff on Apple TV but I haven't started that one. So many Apple series start with one very plodding episode, then improve.

No me neither, but it terrifies me when people judge hidden disabilities, and that's definitely happened here. Looks like both sides are awful tbh.
