It's nearly 11am. I have phone calls to make and lesson prep to do. The lesson prep means moving the dolls' house from the table I need to work at and I don't know where to put it. So I'm lolling on my bed and having another cuppa. Peak procrastination.

Come for a bbq, says daughter. Then: Our bbq's broken; can we borrow yours? Ours hasn't been used since 2022. Mr Hoarder won't part with it. Grudgingly agrees to lend it. Then finds a crucial part rusted in position, unable to be shifted. D's gone to buy one. I want rid of ours even more now!

Acanthus. Bear's Breeches. Looks lovely in flower. Don't be deceived. Spreads as insidiously as Reform's lies, popping up all over the place. Almost impossible to eradicate. Even a little bit of root will sprout. Seems resistant to weedkiller. Horrible thing. In this garden when we came.

Having a vivid visual imagination can sometimes be a curse. It's ruined Pretty Flamingo for me. "When she walks by, she brightens up the neighbourhood." That's because her legs bend backwards, she walks in a weird stalky-legged manner and has a huge hooked nose.

We collect the shower water in a bucket while it runs from cold to warm and use it to water the garden. After my shower, I went out with the bucket, in my dressing gown, as is my custom. Only to be faced with a man on a ladder, doing next door's guttering. Just hope he has a strong stomach.

Miss Hettie is sulking under my bed. Men with chainsaws arrived shortly before 8am to take out next door's conifers so she hasn't been allowed out. She's in for a shock later. So, sadly, are the robin and the wren, both of whom liked to serenade me from within the conifers.

Our late, lamented Mole (cat) was a prodigious hunter. Just before I woke this morning, I dreamt that he was trying to catch an adder. As they wrestled it bit him. He died in my arms. Not a particularly cheery start to the day!

Belatedly, I must tell you that I read the preview copy of The Wolf That Chews Rocks by Russell Jones and just loved it. Well researched info on the development from wolf to dog, interwoven with his life with the resident 'wolf' in laugh-out-loud detail. I'll be buying several copies as C/mas gifts.
