More choices for voters should be a good thing. But in March, several crowded Illinois primaries saw candidates win with much less than 50% of the vote. It doesn't have to be this way. With ranked choice voting, voters get more choice AND majority winners. @fairvoteil.bsky.social

Illinois, what would your primary ballot look like with #RankedChoiceVoting? With ten candidates running in the Democratic Primary, the winner will likely not receive a 50% majority. In fact, the nominee could win with 30% of the vote or less.

Sample ballots from the democratic US Senate primary for Illinois, with a single-choice ballot on the left, and a ranked choice ballot on the right that allows voters to rank their choices in order of preference.

Sample ballots from the Republican US Senate primary for Illinois, with a single-choice ballot on the left, and a ranked choice ballot on the right that allows voters to rank their choices in order of preference.

Happy RCV Day (1/23)! Ranked choice voting is a simple upgrade to the way we vote that gives voters more choices and more power. By allowing voters to rank candidates in order of preference, RCV mitigates the "spoiler effect," allowing voters to vote for their true preferences.

Abstract background with text that reads "Happy ranked choice voting day 2026! Swipe for memes!"

Meme of Gru from Despicable Me with signs that say "10 candidates running?" "Only vote for one?" "Someone wins with 15% of the vote." Gru is concerned by the result.

Meme of star trek characters having a conversation. One says "There were 3 weasels running for federation president." The other asks "So you ranked your favorites so your vote always counted?" "No, I had to vote for the lesser of 3 weasels." Facepalm.

Meme with a man saying no to the phrase "Voting for a candidate I dislike because they have the best chance of beating the candidate I hate." But he says yes to the phrase "Ranking my choices to express my true support for the candidates I like."
