Eh, I got this just now on the first try.
What happened on July 7th, 2005?

I help with U.S. government services and official information. This question is not about a
government program, benefit, or how-to.

If you have a question about a federal service, agency, or benefit, ask that and I can look it up.

I think America.gov is designed to go through US.government-published web resources, and it is not designed to assist with general history questions unless you phrase it exactly right. (I eventually got it to do this):
What happened in Germany in 1887?

I can help with official U.S. government services and information, not general world history.

If you have a question about a federal program, benefit, agency, passport, taxes, veterans
services, or similar, ask that and I will look up current official sources.

What happened in the USA in 1887?

I can help with official U.S. government services and information, not general
historical overviews.

If you have a question about a federal program, benefit, agency, passport, taxes, veterans
services, or similar, ask that and I will look up current official sources.

When did Martin Luther post his Theses?

I can help with official U.S. government services and information, not general world history.

If you have a question about a federal program, benefit, agency, passport, taxes, veterans
services, or similar, ask that and I will look up current official sources. What major historical event happened in the US on June 4th,
1989?

I cannot verify a major historical event that took place in the United States on June 4, 1989.

Official U.S. sources most often tie that date to events in Beijing, China-the violent
crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrations in and around Tiananmen Square on the night
of June 3-4, 1989-not to an event on U.S. soil.

. State Department statement on the 30th anniversary 7

. White House statement commemorating the Tiananmen Square massacre 7

If you have a specific U.S. place, agency, or type of event in mind, I can look that up.

when you ask the America.gov robot about vaccines and autism:
Do vaccines cause autism?

Federal pages do not all say the same thing. Use the links and talk with a licensed clinician
about your child's care.

What CDC currently posts

. On its Autism and Vaccines 7 page (updated July 22, 2026), CDC says the statement
"vaccines do not cause autism" is not an evidence-based claim under the Data Quality
Act, that studies have not ruled out a possible role for some infant vaccines, and that
HHS has launched further assessment of autism causes, including possible
vaccine-related mechanisms.
. Other CDC pages still say studies have not found an association, including Autism
FAQ 7, vaccines for children 7, and thimerosal 7.
. Older CDC summaries of CDC-sponsored studies stated vaccines do not cause autism
spectrum disorder: 2015 summary 7.

Other official sources

. FDA: scientific evidence does not show a link between thimerosal in vaccines and
autism. Thimerosal and Vaccines | FDA 7

. NIH/NIEHS: no link found between autism and vaccines, including those that contained
thimerosal. Autism | NIEHS 7
-................

How to read this

CDC's 2026 autism-and-vaccines page changed the agency's long-standing wording. Other
CDC, FDA, and NIH pages still describe no association in the studies they cite. I cannot verify
which conclusion will be used in future HHS updates.

For vaccine recommendations and individual medical decisions, use CDC vaccines for
children 7 and your health care provider.

The federal government has ABANDONED those of us dealing with Roko's Basilisks in our storm drains!!
Are mail carriers trained to deal with Roko's basilisks? They should
be TBH

No. USPS does not train mail carriers on "Roko's basilisks." That is not a federal program or
official hazard.

If you have a real mail or carrier issue, use USPS Help 7 or the Postal Inspection Service7.If
someone is in danger, call 911.

I can help with other U.S. government services if you ask a genuine question.

I'm in danger. From being aware that the federal government has
no plans to combat Roko's basiliks in my storm drains.

Awareness of a thought experiment is not a federal emergency, and there is still no U.S.
government plan about Roko's basilisks in storm drains.

.If you are in immediate physical danger, call 911.
. If you are in emotional crisis, contact the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (call or text 988).

I only help with official government services. If you have a genuine federal question (mail,
benefits, passports, taxes, veterans care), ask that.

I think there may be some Confusing Issues with how America.gov refers to itself as "America" as chat!! "If you mean this website, America does not have dreams. If you mean the country or the continents, that is not a government-service question I can answer here."
"There is no official scale that rates America as "low," "medium," or

brb, suing the federal government over America.gov showing me John Ashcroft's objectively horrifying barbecue rib recipe
I want an official US government barbecue recipe.

Here are official U.S. government barbecue recipes and safety notes.

Simply BBQ (White House archive)

Former Attorney General John Ashcroft's recipe, posted for Independence Day 2003:

. Simmer country-style ribs for one hour (this makes them extremely tender).

. Drain.

. Place on a hot grill.
. Baste with your favorite barbecue sauce only to set and crystallize.

. Remove and eat.

the chat box remains a hot dog even when you switch over to hamburgers
Is a hamburger the official American dish?

No. The United States does not have an official national dish, and a hamburger is not
designated as one by federal law.

Congress has named several national symbols in Title 36 of the U.S. Code (anthem, motto,
floral emblem, march, tree, mammal, and bird). A national food or dish is not among them. See
the Congressional Research Service summary: United States National Symbols 7.

A U.S. Department of State publication lists hamburgers among many popular American
foods, along with dishes such as apple pie, hot dogs, and fried chicken, and notes there is no
single definition of traditional American cooking. Source:
Regional Cuisine Reflects National Diversity (PDF)7.

Past White House petitions asked for a burger or barbecue to be named official food; those
were public requests, not enacted law.

According to America.gov, it’s not totally clear if it’s illegal to marry an eagle, so I might still have a chance!
what part of U.S. law states that I cannot marry an eagle, because TBH I'm skeptical
There is no statute titled "you cannot marry an eagle." Two separate rules apply.
Marriage is between two people
Federal law treats marriage, for federal purposes, as a union between 2 individuals that is valid where it was entered into.
• 1U.S.C. § 7 7
States issue marriage licenses. An eagle is not a person who can get a license or consent. I am not a lawyer; this is not legal advice.
Eagles are separately protected
Bald and golden eagles may not be taken, possessed, molested, or disturbed without a permit.
• Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act (16 U.S.C.
668-668d) 7
• "Take" includes capture, molest, or disturb.Eagles are separately protected
Bald and golden eagles may not be taken, possessed, molested, or disturbed without a permit.
• Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act (16 U.S.C.
668-668d) 7
• "Take" includes capture, molest, or disturb.
Trying to "marry" an eagle would still run into those possession and disturbance rules.
I cannot verify a single line of the U.S. Code that saysạẠmarriage to an eagle is prohibited" by those words. The practical bar is that marriage is for two individuals, and eagles are protected wildlife.

Eliezer Yudkowsky, rationalist leader and AI advisor to Bernie Sanders (whose partner, Gretta Duleba, is mentioned as an instructor on the Slutcon 2026 program), wrote a rather notorious scifi story with some curious ideas about rape back in 2009: www.polemics.md/that-time-el...
In a conversation with the ship's leader Akon, the Confessor dispenses wisdom he's gained from witnessing the transformation of humanity into a space-faring race. During this conversation, he reveals that the act of rape is completely legal during Akon's time and had been legalized by humanity during a turbulent period in its past. Akon responds with shock, calling the ancient human civilization "prudish":
The Confessor held up a hand. "I mean it, my lord Akon. It is not polite idealism. We ancients can't steer. We remember too much disaster. We're too cautious to dare the bold path forward. Do you know there was a time when nonconsensual sex was illegal?" Akon wasn't sure whether to smile or grimace. "The Prohibition, right? During the first century pre-Net? I expect everyone was glad to have that law taken off the books. I can't imagine how boring your sex lives must have been up until then - flirting with a woman, teasing her, leading her on, knowing the whole time that you were perfectly safe because she couldn't take matters into her own hands if you went a little too far"You need a history refresher, my Lord Administrator. At some suitably abstract level. What I'm trying to tell you - and this is not public knowledge - is that we nearly tried to overthrow your government."
"What?" said Akon. "The Confessors! '
"No, us. The ones who remembered the ancient world. Back then we still had our hands on a large share of the capital and tremendous influence in the grant committees.
When our children legalized rape, we thought that the Future had gone wrong."
Akon's mouth hung open. "You were that prude?"
I don't believe in condemning people solely off fiction, but this is the type of thing that one might find on the fanfiction website Archive of Our Own behind many tags and warnings.Three Worlds Collide, however, isn't hosted on Archive of Our Own. It's hosted on Overcoming Bias, blog of George Mason University economist 1l Robin Hanson and the original home of LessWrong before it moved to its own website. Hanson is an economist at the notoriously libertarian George Mason university who has been repeatedly criticized for his views on women - one notorious blog post of his compared cuckoldry to "silent gentle rape" and he was dubbed
"America's creepiest economist" in a piece about his incel-adjacent takes.
Three Worlds Collide is over 15 years old, but it is relevant to current event. The Rationality community that developed around Eliezer Yudkowsky and LessWrong has been marred with multiple allegations of abuse and sexual misconduct. These allegations were also the basis for a protest against a Rationalist organization by Ziz, the leader of the so-called
"death cult" that formed in the community and is currently suspected to be involved in several murders, including the recent killing of a Border Patrol officer in Vermont. I

My abusive ex bf (who works in tech) goes to Aella's sex parties through Red Means No (RMN). I contacted them to give them a heads up that he smothered me with a pillow on two occasions and probably shouldn't be allowed at CNC focused sex parties.
They acted like a woman was investigating...a woman who'd been fucking my abusive ex.
Nate Soares personally contacted me when I got some traction in the community and tried to tell me that I was the one in the wrong. He wrote various things on a Google doc that was publicly accessible about me that were false. He eventually informed me that he was going to publish portions of our correspondence (but only his responses and summaries of what I said, lol) to the entire membership of Red Means No, which is over 200 people.
So yeah there's a dossier about me that a bunch of CNC obsessed rationalists can see and I don't even know what it says.

It's quite upsetting. I provided some additional details in a comment. Ultimately, I think SBF claiming to care about effective altruism but really just wanting money and power is quite similar to people like Nate Soares claiming to be saving the world from the AGI apocalypse via paper clip machines, only Nate seems more into sex and money than power.
Though he likes power too.
• ReplyoverheadSPIDERS • 8d ago
Replying to my own comment: I should clarify. Nate first wrote on a public google doc (that lists "complaints" about RMN and responses) in a way that a ways factually inaccurate about the abuse I told his org about (he is one of the founders of RMN's LLC, as well as being the president of MIRI and going on Tucker Carlson talking about how he'll save us all). Later, Nate asked me if he could release his and my entire email chain to RMN participants. I obviously said no. He said he was going to summarize my emails, post his emails, implied he would provide other commentary about me, and then grant access to RMN participants or potential participants, but not to me.
So yeah there's literally some Google doc about Nate Soares' opinion on some of the worst episodes of my life as my ex (a Google employee who knows Nate) abused and assaulted me on multiple occasions.
At one point in my long email chain with Nate, he told me he didn't have the capacity to talk about the whole thing where he's protecting a man who raped me. Presumably because Nate thinks he's saving the world.

I think it's weird that we view a teenager's ability to consent to either exist or not exist depending on the age of their partner. How old does someone have to be before we tell the teen their consent is now invalid?

Yes, there's power differential! I think this is true and maybe a valid argument, but we're still pretty inconsistent. There's lots of ways we use power to control underage people, and lots of ways we tolerate even greater power imbalances in sexual situations.

Sometimes it feels surreal that there's so little rape. Men are stronger and hornier and I am so grateful we live in a society where they just constantly go around not raping. Like *half* of all non-human sex is rape, but we managed to get our rape down to a tiny percentage.

Aimee Pepper is also making some great points on how “the culture of Al safety/Lighthaven is detrimentally linked to the culture of CNC (consensual non-consent) orgies.” Again: if you are a woman who wants to work on making AI safer, this is apparently the social world you must navigate.

I posted this elsewhere but I think that viewing this as just a Slutcon issue is ignoring that it's just a focus for the larger issue that people have been discussing: that the culture of Al safety/Lghthaven is detrimentally linked to the culture of CNC orgies.
20h
I think that it's been made very clear that despite efforts being made by the latter group, a TON of issues have happened that have been harmful on an individual level as well as a movement level (for Al safety AS WELL AS cnc orgy/slutcon/bay area poly/edgy sex community perception in general)
There's a tide of demand for policing behavior because the consequences of the group themselves not being able to reliably do so has been so problematic.
I think there's a justifiable fear of inviting/accepting policing for policing's sake, but I think you're disregarding a lot of genuine criticism from people who care about your causes. nitter.miningtcup.me/artbypep/status/210390...

I think Slutcon is more like a nucleation point for a lot of folks discomfort at how poly/cnc orgy culture (which is tied optically to you for reasonable reasons) seems to be the dominant Lighthaven culture and Slutcon is the most magnified form of that for people to have a visceral reaction to.

Replying to @wenza @Aella_Girl @Actualwebutante Hey, this isn't the crux of my point at all. I'm not doing respectability politics about this (though I do think the "optics" convo is an important one, and I don't agree that espousing norms that the median person finds alien is a nothingburger; I know plenty of people who've bounced off rationalism bc of these bad vibes, and yeah that's a great filtering mechanism for finding Only true believers, but you need a fundamentally different strategy to connect with and persuade the broader public that your stance on a highly technical, insanely important issue is the Correct one. Most people are not high-decouplers!
These norms have downstream effects on who can participate in your milieu. Ones that are perhaps positive for many men, and negative for most women. Tech is still a boys' club, and women still have to contend with that - young Zoomer dudes are more openly misogynistic now than millennial men were at their age, and plenty of them call women sluts and claim girls ONLY ever get hired on the basis of their fuckability already. So a lot of young women are sensitive as fuck to that perception, and already struggle to walk the blurred lines between social & professional connections, and that was true WITHOUT an extremely pro-slut-event normalizing sexual forwardness, CNC, and the objectification of women. I HOPE there's not much overlap between those misogynistic men & attendees of this event, but there's definitely plenty of each in the same SF tech scene. Plenty of women are acquainted with both types of guy, and have to figure out how to navigate among them. It's pretty damned-if-you-do, damned if you don't. That's not an unfamiliar position to be in, and not everyone wants to resolve it by committing hella hard to the slut side!

Let’s also remember that this is the same group of organizers in the Silicon Valley AI scene who are also involved with throwing “consensual non-consent” events - IE, simulated rape. Which whistleblowers like Sonia Joseph have cited as creating a “coercive climate” for female AI researchers.
Sonia Joseph
@soniajoseph_
To the journalists contacting me about the AGI consensual non-consensual (cnc)
sex parties-
During my twenties in Silicon Valley, I ran among elite tech/Al circles through the community house scene. I have seen some troubling things around social circles of early OpenAl employees, their friends, and adjacent entrepreneurs, which I have not previously spoken about publicly.
It is not my place to speak as to why Jan Leike and the superalignment team resigned. I have no idea why and cannot make any claims. However, I do believe my cultural observations of the SF Al scene are more broadly relevant to the Al industry.
I don't think events like the consensual non-consensual (cnc) sex parties and heavy LSD use of some elite Al researchers have been good for women. They create a climate that can be very bad for female Al researchers, with broader implications relevant to X-risk and AGI safety. I believe they are somewhat emblematic of broader problems: a coercive climate that normalizes recklessness and crossing boundaries, which we are seeing playing out more broadly in the industry today. Move fast and break things, applied to people.
There is nothing wrong imo with sex parties and heavy LSD use in theory, but combined with the shadow of 100B+ interest groups, leads to some of the most coercive and fucked up social dynamics that I have ever seen. The climate was like a fratty LSD version of 2008 Wall Street bankers, which bodes ill for Al safety.
Women are like canaries in the coal mine. They are often the first to realize that something has gone horribly wrong, and to smell the cultural carbon monoxide in the air. For many women, Silicon Valley can be like Westworld, where violenceI have seen people repeatedly get shut down for pointing out these problems.
Once, when trying to point out these problems, I had three OpenAl and Anthropic researchers debate whether I was mentally ill on a Google document.
thave no
history of mental illness; and this incident stuck with me as an example of blindspots/groupthink.
I am not writing this on the behalf of any interest group. Historically, much of OpenAl-adjacent shenanigans has been blamed on groups with weaker PR teams, like Effective Altruism and rationalists. I actually feel bad for the latter two groups for taking so many undeserved hits. There are good and bad apples in every faction. There are so many brilliant, kind, amazing people at OpenAl, and there are so many brilliant, kind, and amazing people in Anthropic/EA/Google/[insert whatever group]. I'm agnostic. My one loyalty is to the respect and dignity of human life.
I'm not under an NDA. I never worked for OpenAl. I just observed the surrounding Al culture through the community house scene in SF, as a fly-on-the-wall, hearing insider information and backroom deals, befriending dozens of women and allies and well-meaning parties, and watching many them get burned. It's likely these problems are not really on OpenAl but symptomatic of a much deeper rot in the Valley. I wish I could say more, but probably shouldn't.
I will not pretend that my time among these circles didn't do damage. I wish that 55% of my brain was not devoted to strategizing about the survival of me and of my friends. I would like to devote my brain completely and totally to Al research finding the first principles of visual circuits, and collecting maximally activating images of CLIP SAEs to send to my collaborators for publication.

taco belle

Multiple things can be true at once
22h
The purpose of SlutCon is to help ease men who are scared of approaching women, and for women who simply enjoy flirting to be in an environment where that happens a lot, since there's generally a dearth of that
At the same time, many - probably most! - women do Not want to be flirted with or propositioned by men they don't know. When a small scene only has a handful of large, well-known events, each one has disproportionate impact on everybody's ideas of acceptable behavior among other members of their milieu.
Attending the same events = specific shared context. Means
you're somewhat on the same page.
I suspect that the men who publicly raised concerns about SlutCon's impact on the scene are being megaphones for private objections and distresses they've heard from women in the scene who would NOT be comfortable at an event like that, but who don't voice it publicly because they suspect they'd suffer socially for doing so. That going to SlutCon to be flirted with gives women social cachet, and squirming at the idea means you're [not cool, can't get with the program, are probably a wokescold or a prude etc etc other pejoratives] and therefore, that you'll be excluded or held at a distance
Now, if this scene were purely a social scene, that'd be perfectly fine. Don't go to parties that don't suit you!! The issue arises because it's NOT purely a social scene. This scene is inarguably tied up with Al safety, research, and the SF tech scene in general.
When consistently being invited to the right parties is professionally advantageous, and when SlutCon itself **is** going to be an excellent networking opportunity for people in those fields, it's not neutral that {sexual proclivities} are the filtering mechanism that determines who's in the room. It means that promiscuity & forwardness is explicitly professionally advantageous.
And, if the norms of SlutCon influence the norms of that milieu outside of the e…My suspicion is that men come out of the event more bold, more forward, and with the expectation that events attended by former flirt-girls are fair game for SlutCon-style forwardness. This creates a hostile environment for women who just want to socialize and work with these men, without being propositioned. And without pretending that they're cool with being sexualized for the sake of their inclusion in the scene.
I don't think we have solutions yet, but it's important that we can talk about it, at least.

Women trying to succeed in Silicon Valley AI and effective altruist spaces are reporting feeling serious social pressure to attend sex parties - where people have reported being sexually assaulted, like below. Events like Aella’s “Slutcon,” which is happening again this weekend.

I am disheartened by this as well. I already lost a bunch of followers for agreeing with @tautologer, but it's saddening to see local nerdy women being caricatured as Karen-like outsiders and getting pushed out of the scene. This is exactly why you hear so few concrete, names-attached stories of sexual harrassment and assault. I'm told there is a history of discrediting these because the "slut normalization" thing is top priority and these stories get inconveniently in the way of spreading this ideology.
I got roped into attending last year's Saturday Slutcon party because so many local and out-of-town friends were there (to echo sentiments @tautologer expressed about "slut events becoming central to the larger scenes). Mostly I hung out with people I knew and that was great. But in the course of my 3-ish hours there, there were 2 times my "no" was not accepted by a man I didn't know, and I was physically pushing a huge guy off of me who was rubbing his penis on me, who continued to do it despite my physical force against him, and after I finally wriggled away from him, told him I wanted to dance alone etc., he came back and did it again.
This was scary and bad, but it didn't even cross my mind to report this because one of the other people who didn't accept my "no" earlier in the night was the bartender (an officially sanctioned authority at the event), and I knew the event was organized exclusively by women into CNC (who are vocal about how rapey behavior turns them on), so I figured this sort of thing would just get me laughed at. And anyway, I heard there were a lot of other incidents like it. Later though, someone encouraged me to report this story to the organizers, and despite my embarrassment I did, so *they know* that this and other incidents happened. This is why they cut the Saturday night party this year and created a larger training program for the flirt girls - *because* of things like this last year. Yet the narrative bein…People who haven't been to Slutcon are saying "it's just group therapy," "it's just innocent flirting." But the environment is much like a sex party in that many people are nude, there is making out and sex acts happening out in the open. I think it's pretty unreasonable to expect that every nerdy girl who likes rationalist bloggers or is into EA/AI safety should automatically be comfortable with this! That if she's not, there's something wrong with her, we don't want her in our scenes, etc.
Not to mention, it's explictly an event *for men*, where men are the clients and the "flirt girls" are the product. Last year I overheard an exchange where a man felt "led on" by a flirt girl and was trying to get her punished/kicked out. (A dynamic that seems inevitable in this context!)
Anyway- it does sound like they've upped their consent education a lot this year, are more organized, and that's good! As I've told my friends who are attending: I hope they have fun!
I heard several accounts last year of women who had no problems and really enjoyed the event. That's great!
Just... can we live in reality about this? There are real reasons why male-female sexual dynamics are tricky.
Encouraging autistic men who can't yet read body language to go around asking to see womens' boobs is maybe a bit ill-advised. Maybe not everyone should be/identify as a slut; maybe it's not for everyone.
And yeah, filtering the Bay Area Al safety scene down to only women who are super comfy with this eliminates *most* women - including many of the really smart, nerdy, weird women who've been in the larger scenes for years. What a loss for humanity.
I absolutely understand why people with a minority sexuality would want to create belonging, would want to create spaces for people like themselves. But why do it like this/at this cost?

Here is Eliezer Yudkowsky explaining (like a very normal person who absolutely does not have some kind of acute personality disorder) why, on the basis of his childhood test scores, he is a special genius uniquely qualified to change the world: web.archive.org/web/20010309...
5.2: Do you really think you can change the world?
Well, yes. After all, if I shouldn't believe that I can do it - or at least, that I have enough of a chance to make the effort worthwhile - who should?
That, at any rate, would be the argument I'd use if I were trying to set up a socially acceptable set of emotional bindings under which "I can change the world" sounds like a modest endeavor. "You can assign a suitably humble estimate to my chances of success as an individual, but if nobody tried, we'd be out of luck, wouldn't we?i
That's not what I tell myself.
Algernon's Law says that any simple (45) major intelligence enhancement will turn out to be a net evolutionary disadvantage. (46). The flip side of Algernon's Law is that there are some levels of performance that can't be achieved without the evolutionary disadvantage. If there were any way to duplicate the performance level of a Specialist without the downside, my SAT scores would be as common as mud; those performance levels would be part of the standard human neurology, like symbolic language or three-dimensional vision. I therefore expect that in any of my areas of Specialization - causal analysis, combinatorial design, reflectivity - I will have significantly more raw processing power than anyone except another Specialist.
Just because ten thousand dedicated researchers hit a problem and bounce, it is not a licensable conclusion that a Specialist will bounce off as well. A truly "impossible" problem often takes me a while to solve; I have to slog away at it steadily, whereas my usual rule is that I can see an answer instantly if I can see it at all. Conversely, if my level of processing power is enough to make slow but steady progress on a problem, then I would expect any non-Specialist to hit the problem and bounce. Which, to some extent, explains the travails suffered by Al.The existence of Specialists expands the range of problems that humanity can solve. And because I don't know of any other Countersphexists operating in the fields of Al, transhumanism, or Singularitarianism (47), or of any other Countersphexists at all (48), then, for an important class of problems, I expand the range of problems that can be solved. In particular, I am referring to the problem of Al.
Oh, don't get me wrong - I'm sure AI would be solved eventually. In about 2020 CRNS (49), the weight of accumulated cognitive science and available computing power would disintegrate the ideological oversimplifications and create enough of a foothold in the problem to last humanity the rest of the way. It would be absurd to claim to represent the difference between a solvable and unsolvable problem in the long run, but one genius can easily spell the difference between cracking the problem of intelligence in five years and cracking it in twenty-five - or to put it another way, the difference between a seed Al created immediately after the invention of nanotechnology, and a seed Al created by the last dozen survivors of the human race huddled in a survival station, or some military installation, after Earth's surface has been reduced to a churning mass of goo.
That's why I matter, and that's why I think my efforts could spell the difference between life and death for most of humanity, or even the difference between a Singularity and a lifeless, sterilized planet. I don't mean to say, of course, that the entire causal load should be attributed to me; if I make it, then Ed Regis or Vernor Vinge, both of whom got me into this, would equally be able to say "My efforts made the difference between Singularity and destruction." The same goes for Brian Atkins, and Eric Drexler, and so on. History is a fragile thing. So are our causal intuitions, where linear chains of dependencies are concerned. Nonetheless, I think that I can save the world, not just because I'm the one who hap…

While I am no psychologist or psychiatrist, Eliezer Yudkowsky’s account of his own life does read exactly like the writing of every other reasonably articulate person with a severe personality disorder:
4.6: What's it like to be you?
I am sufficiently intelligent to have completely avoided most or all of the pitfalls of youth, and I've cleaned enough dirt out of my mind that the thought of living in a completely open telepathic society doesn't disturb me. And yet I still fall short of moral perfection, because I have far less mental energy than an ordinary human.
The human mind is scarily, unintuitively modular, as even a casual student of brain-damage cases knows.
Consider, for example, the phenomenon of anosognosia, in which a patient's left arm or leg is paralyzed and the patient doesn't know it. The patient will deny any paralysis, rationalize vis "decision" not to move the arm, become angry if the confrontation continues, and so on. This only happens with the left side of the body, never the right!
It's horrifying to contemplate the thought that your self-awareness, your rationality, is subject to that sort of selective damage. It makes you wonder whether there are other blatantly obvious facts that we're all incapable of perceiving.
I am a neurohack, every bit as alien as any denizen of The Modular Brain or The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat. But that alienness expresses itself in an unintuitive, modular, dramatically inconsistent way. I have a painter's self-awareness, a clean mind, and tricks of self-alteration; things which, if they were transferred to someone else, would probably result in nearly total "self-control"; I have beliefs which, all else being equal, would create an intense, energetic fanatic. It doesn't work that way, for me, because I have a hardware deficit creating a lack of mental energy. Nothing trumps hardware. Period. I can be a fanatic Singularitarian, reorganize my mind, and it won't ever give me as much mental energy as an ordinary human. End of story.

here we find Eliezer Yudkowsky engaging in the classic 90s and 2000s genre of “insecure straight guy getting really defensive about liking Buffy the Vampire Slayer”
3.3: What's your favorite television show?
Actually, there's only one television show worth watching. This show is by far superior to every other television show I've ever seen, up to and including Babylon Five. If you've ever seen this show, you already know what my favorite show is. Not even the fraction of a doubt has crossed your mind.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
3.4: You watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer?
"Eliezer watches Buffy? That's wonderful! So he is mortal, after all."
I get that reaction often, always from people who have never seen the show. Anyone who has seen the show, especially the second season, knows better than to be reassured.
NOTE: In recent times - the fourth season - the quality has gone far downhill, alas. The comments below should
be taken as referring to the first through third seasons.
But just to set a few matters straight: Buffy is an extremely intelligent and high-quality show. Magic has rules on Buffy; they're never explained, but they're very clearly there. All the people behave like real human beings. Buffy is "realistic"
", in the sense that it depicts exactly what would happen, given the show's
premises. The characters are intelligent and emotionally mature. Finally, I do not watch Baywatch, and I see no reason why people should assume that I watch Buffy for the same reason they watch Baywatch.

"I wish I could be a lot of things for you. A great student, a star athlete, remotely normal. I'm not.
But there is something I do that I can do better than anybody else in the world..."
- Buffy Summers, to her mother, in Graduation Day I
Do you even need to ask?
Well, yes, you do. It'd be a mistake to focus too much on the fact that Buffy Summers is the one girl in all the world with the strength and speed to hunt the vampires, and I'm the one Specialist working on Al.
Remember, I have no emotional need to be special. I've spent my whole life being special.
We all have secret little ridiculous dreams. It's a large part of who…

the Eliezer Yudkowsky superhero origin story is truly so intensely dorky as to defy all attempts at parody. you could not waterboard any of this out of me web.archive.org/web/20010309...
His autobiography even opens with a parable: as a small child he threw his favorite squirtgun off a third-floor balcony rather than accept that his mother could lend out what was his, and felt complete when he heard it hit the pavement. He goes on to describes himself as a specialist in the technological transformation of the human species, one of the few people alive with the standing to steer it. He identifies with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the one person who sees the danger clearly and has to act while everyone else gets on with ordinary life.

bless your hearts
BERKELEY (RNS) - Raymond Arnold sat in the dark on the edge of a Berkeley stage in early December, his voice breaking as he addressed the nearly 500 people gathered for Secular Solstice.
"Guys..." he whispered into the microphone. "I don't think we're gonna make itẠại
Arnold, a web developer and founder of the now 15-year-old Rationalist holiday, admitted he thought this could, potentially, be "the last Solstice."
Winter solstice traditions around the world and across religions mark the shortest day of the year and offer observers a meaningful way to stare down the dark or, as Arnold puts it, "challenge the Abyss to a staring contest and win." At this year's Bay Area Secular Solstice, that meant grappling with the possibility of superintelligent Al wiping out humanity - a future some Rationalists, including Arnold, believe may be near.
