celebrate when their favorite fancreators go pro, since it is an established and normalized way to launch a career. there’s no shortage of creators who only wish to stay in the hobby/fandom space either, the choice is seen as a simple career choice and not a bid for fame and money.

publishers there regularly seed talent from the fanwork space. editors form relationships with ppl interested in going pro even before their first original idea gets pitched. they nurture the creator through the writing and editing process up until the final manuscript. as a result, readers

numbers is frankly an embarrassing practice of the english language publishing industry. publishers don’t believe in writers enough to have them write a new novel, they rely on existing fandom stats to guarantee sales, which is so absolutely pathetic. if you look over at the JP industry,

minority, but i believe that the problem lies with the fact that publishers are not willing to invest in creatives. i think the bnf -> published author pipeline should be encouraged and even formally structured… WITH the expectation that they write something wholly original. the filing of serial

yes that’s exactly it! it’s a tough thing to balance, but i think awareness that positivity is not the be all/end all of a healthy community environment is a great place to start. i’m glad your server enjoyed my post. i have so many thoughts about capitalism/BNFs actually… i’m probably in the

ofc i don't want to be pessimistic, haha, or make a mountain out of a mole hill - but im sorta like how do these ppl expect to be able to beta-read each other effectively? they're too busy tiptoe-ing around each other...

fai @faiell.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
it can even go as far as - before you express a preference for one style of writing (smth as mild as shorter chapters for instance), you MUST disclaim that there's nothing wrong with the opposite. and that lvl of carefulness leads me to believe that there really is some trust issue underneath?

fai @faiell.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
i dont know if it's specific to writers only, or even my fandom only, but my friends & i call it "culture of nice" or "everyone runs for mayor". at the surface, an unmalicious desire to be inclusive/well-liked, but it can easily become self-censorship or censoring of others in order to not offend.

fai @faiell.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
thank you sm for reading! the relationship between trust & community is v interesting to me. you asked "what makes a good beta reader" and "what makes a good friend", both great q's... makes me think abt how the fanfic writing community that i've experienced has issues with trust/honesty.

the original complaint kept conflating the two which was annoying. they spoke as if fancomics don’t exist.

fai @faiell.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
yeah!! and it was such a smooth process. we just needed our gov id, sellers permit, and 1 copy of our comic for them to verify! they had other requirements that helped even further such as a quantity limit on non-comic merch but i think check-in comic is a rly good place to start

fai @faiell.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
stop making this a fanart vs. original debate. its a merch vs. books problem. also the onus is on the organizers! at manga ichiba we were required to bring our comic in physically at vendor check in. it’s that easy

i had an idea for a platform where anyone could quickly set up an online comics fair if they wanted. could be used for online doujinshi events too.

wow. i rly wish that my comics fair site had gotten off the ground now... the format of shortbox is so simple, honestly theres nothing special abt it other than existing reputation.

one week left to apply. this is an excellent chance to try your hand at doujinshi - happening next to an established anime con (ALA) with a low, non-prohibitive table cost ($30), and rules around doujin-exclusivity! link: forms.gle/hhrb9Ffzs6bY1P… website: mmm.yaoi.city

reading emily wilson’s odyssey rn and ironically the way it’s written (simpler, plainer prose) makes it difficult for me to slow down. i caught myself almost skipping over a couple lines without processing anything. thought it was interesting how flowery writing helps keep my brain more awake

like even me... i have a couple of fics under my belt now on ao3 but i still sorta consider myself an artist who occasionally writes fic. im looking for the ppl who put their ao3 handles on their profile first. i dont wanna sound picky tho like i love that everyone who came were avid fanfic readers

fai @faiell.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
i wish you lived nearby too!! and i agree, it will just grow organically if we do more. 15 people is exactly the amount of people i expected (i printed 15 copies of my fic!) but i just thought i would have teased out at least 1 or 2 more elusive fic writers from their homes.
110
fai @faiell.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
we had a bunch of flyers given out with heated rivalry stamp rally prizes at AX!!! and that did help attract many of the people who came! it's not rly the turnout that bothers me, it's just... writers specifically... how do i reach them?
111
fai @faiell.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
anyways everyone who went really enjoyed it! we definitely want to do it again. if anyone is interested in hosting something similar in their part of the world feel free to DM me! this too is doujinshi culture

fai @faiell.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
i advertised it in the big heated rivalry fanfiction discord server, but it got passed over pretty quickly… maybe it’s too big honestly. people are mostly there to lurk. that makes me miss forums lol. i considered posting to the hr fanfic reddit but wasn’t sure of the etiquette

the other thing i thought of was unique to the weekend - it was quite a busy one in terms of irl events in socal. both warped tour and sdcc were being held. there was also a yaoi popup in anaheim.
120
fai @faiell.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
another factor may have been the fandom focus - while HR is popular, it’s still new. it only recently made it onto the ao3 stats. people who would be interested in a fic swap event might not be into HR in particular
230
fai @faiell.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
it may just have been an issue of geography, since i got a lot of messages wishing the event was somewhere else, but southern california is quite dense with fandom activity. i didn’t think it would be an issue.
130
fai @faiell.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
the thing i am reflecting on the most is - how do i attract more writers? it was wonderful to connect with fellow readers and artists, but one of the goals of the event was to hold an irl community event for writers specifically.
