In my current WIP: Kit has the kind of laugh you make when someone says that they’re worried about you because your life is falling apart, and you laugh helplessly and go, “you’re right! It is!” Alistair laughs genuinely, because he’s already been there and came out the other side.

Is the sudden lack of confidence mid-way through a book a result of depression or just a side-effect of the process? Who knows!

A man holding his hair saying, “should I really finish this? Is there any meaning in this!?”

Writing the sequel while working on several projects for my other penname (with my bestie!) means that my progress has been slow lately… I’m trying to remind myself that a lack of hype now doesn’t mean it’ll be that way forever!

Woman 2: If you spoil this for me, all bets are off.

If my cat had it her way I would write nothing but short stories about a poor, starving, beautiful kitten who is adopted by a series of burly men with hats She loves big guys so much

There is nothing she loves more than a rugged man in a hat, and these guys were the Pokémon evolved form of her favorite thing in the world

Me: emotionally shut off after sudden electrical fire, staring into space My wife: Ran so fast she probably hit a record, collapsing on the couch Lois the cat, howling: I CANNOT BELIEVE THERE WERE FIREFIGHTERS IN THIS APARTMENT AND YOU WOULD NOT LET ME GO HOME WITH THEM. WARDENS. TYRANTS. FIENDS.

The place still smells like ozone so I feel like I did do the right thing by turning off the electricity the moment I heard popping in the walls, but oh my god

110

So I have figured out that I am, indeed, useless in an emergency, because while I did prevent an electrical fire from catching and burning the apartment down, I couldn’t get the cats in the carriers and the adrenaline mostly involved me on my hands and knees with churu begging them to trust me

Things my poor wife has to hear me say while I work on this WIP: “Did I accidentally make this wizard a furry?” “I’ve done this to myself.” “I swear to god, they’re THIS close to kissing.” <— said on repeat for weeks

(Thank god for the alt text feature, because my phone just shows a blank image)

Quite often, when an antagonist accuses the MC of thinking too highly of himself, the MC gets to prove how humble he is. Kit is not that guy.

“I don’t just think I’m better than you,” Kit said. “I -am- better than you.”

If you can’t afford it right now but still want to read it, reach out!

If you don’t want to shell out $ to corporations like Amazon but still want to read about a trans man stealing back the heart of a goblin prince, you can find Goblin Heart here: faeloxley.itch.io/goblin-heart

A man in a peasant tunic and red surcoat with a hood reaches out to a woman in a blue gown and shawl. They seem to be in a cave.
Man: Oh benevolent book fairy, I’d like a queer romance with a trans hero and fairytale vibes.
Woman: Goblin Heart by Fae Loxley is literally on Itchio right now

I am personally like none of them. I started transitioning in my thirties and still can’t afford the surgery I need, so for safety’s sake I go by my deadname at work. But right now I feel the closest kinship to Emrys, because I would also like to be a fantasy cybernetic wizard.

030

Each book has a trans MC: Will transitioned early and had some time to get comfortable with himself Kit is transitioning as a young adult, untangling the knots he had to twist himself into as a survival mechanism Emrys no longer has a body made of flesh and blood, and he likes it that way.

Trying not to hiss at the world like a feral cat because I got my period (I need to readjust my dosage re: HRT) This feeling is exactly why the MC in book three is the way he is (he shows up in book two. You’ll know when you see him)

Goblin Heart has it all: Queer MM romance, enchanted princes, magical blacksmiths, quirky goblin mentors, and a very weird twist on the Cinderella fairytale. Check it out here: buy.bookfunnel.com/yeve7f638j

Drawing of Cinderella in a white and blue gown staring at something while her godmother (in a white bonnet) points and looks on. The pumpkin and mice carriage is replaced by the cover of Goblin Heart by Fae Loxley, which has a man walking through a field of wildflowers against an orange sky with a sketchy castle in the background.
Text:
Godmother: Look, hon, this one is as queer as it gets.
Cinderella: The author sure focuses on how sharp the goblin prince’s claws are.
Godmother: Well… yes. Yes, he does.

Someone called Goblin Heart one of the “weirdest takes” on Cinderella (in a positive way), and I love that, honestly. Check it out here: buy.bookfunnel.com/yeve7f638j

I went to the royal ball and all I got was serious trauma and a gay goblin prince

This is the cat who has been announcing her place in the family of things all morning at full volume:

A black and white cat (mostly white, with a black tail and a black splotch over her face like a mid-sized bob) sitting in a covered space of a cat tree with her right paw extended.

Wild Cat: You do not have to be bad. You do not have to walk across our faces A hundred times, lamenting You only have to flop your soft body Between us and let yourself be petted Tell me of kibble, yours And I will say, “Jesus Christ, Lois, you were fed thirty fucking minutes ago please god”

Thank you, that’s great advice! College wasn’t all bad, but the environment at that school was a bit of a pressure cooker.

All that is to say that I’m finally planning to go back to school. I’m in a place where it feels possible again, and the prospect doesn’t trigger a fight or flight response. This time, I’m being kinder to myself. (And I’m still writing, of course!)

It has taken me a while to rekindle my love of academic learning. Therapy was a big part of it, but so was speaking to people who’d been in grad school. I compared their coursework to what had been expected of an 18-21 y/o me, and it was unsettling. Only an outsider saw it for what it was.

My academic writing had landed a professor of mine a seat at an international conference (yes, she took the credit). Another prof had used my writing to draft a good portion of his book (also with no credit). Now, I was spent. It was like I’d gone to college just to be used and discarded.

“If you don’t go to grad school now, you never will,” one of my professors said. I went back to the dorm and was physically ill for a week at the prospect of several more years of unending pressure and impossible deadlines. I went home after graduation. I didn’t write another word for ten years.

“Wow,” I thought, completely missing the point. “We’re working harder than Harvard graduate students! Time to have my usual cry before my next class!” Two years later, I was fully broken. It was like someone had reached into my head and ripped out something pivotal.

When I was a sophomore in college, a visiting professor from Harvard pulled a few members of my class aside the day before she went home. “You’re being exploited,” she said. “Even our graduate students aren’t pushed this hard. You have to advocate for yourselves.”

Unfortunately, my mother did give me the coldest and most accurate read the other day when we were talking about her new orange cat. Me: Yeah, there’s nothing like a good orange boy. Mom: … you know… you’re kind of a good orange boy, now.

I’m still getting through the sequel to Goblin Heart (officially over the halfway mark!), but I might also be working on a vampire/werewolf romance…

Swans: Holy shit. He should bite him.

My void cat prefers to sleep on me, but only if I have covered my legs with a blanket first. When I’m sans blanket, he begrudgingly gets into my lap and stares at me with a heartbreaking look typically reserved for miserable hound dogs.
