In my current WIP: Kit has the kind of laugh you make when someone says that they’re worried about you because your life is falling apart, and you laugh helplessly and go, “you’re right! It is!” Alistair laughs genuinely, because he’s already been there and came out the other side.

The girl clamped a bony hand around Kit’s left wrist and spoke in a breathy, excited tone.
“My lord,” she said. “My king. You’ve come.”
“No, thank you,” Kit said, trying to pry her loose. “I don’t want to know whatever is happening to you at present.”
The girl only hung on tighter.
“We’ve been waiting for you,” she said. Another pair of hands grabbed Kit by the shoulders, and he twisted to see a second veiled girl at his back. “Months and months and months. Months and months.”
“Steady, sister Olive,” the girl behind Kit said. They started dragging Kit backward through the crowd. “We must not upset him.”
“Yes, sister Hazel,” Olive said. She was practically trembling. “Don’t worry, my king. Mother will explain.”
“Absolutely not,” Kit said, and pulled his arm up to bite her.

I hit my weekly word count! I don’t normally have word count goals, but I needed one this time. Tracking progress in this way has helped me work through a difficult (but ultimately satisfying!) chapter. A word count goal also helps me enforce writing breaks. Time to take a day or so to recharge!
