I thought deploying the discord bridge was also really surprisingly easy. But element is NOT a 1:1 Discord replacement and the way chats and rooms are structured is still frustrating to me, it's a weird in-between of pure comm apps like WhatsApp and Slack-likes that I doubt will gain mass adoption

First time I tried it around 2020 I gave up in a half-configured state, but this year I managed to set up ESS with surprisingly little friction other than the heavy reliance on kubernetes of which I had to learn the basics (didn't really want to run out it of a container). It even has its own sso.

A tier list of fundamental particles showing electron and gluon in S+, a surprising electron antineutrino along with the usual suspects (including bosons) in S, and a preference for the third generation of quarks in the rest of the list while leptons are ranked by generation.

(But yeah, sometimes it IS about the message!)

I can describe all of these, then, and be confident that someone who has truly engaged with art will get it; I won't spend a minute trying to convince someone who has not. It's not about the message, it is about how it gets you, reader, viewer, listener, player, there.

Probing my headcanon of the ranger's journey in Quake, because a map author has decided to use a blue keycard rather than a rune outside of a futuristic base. As I blast through the fiends and knights, why a keycard? Could this be a meaningful discontinuity?

Feeling my blood pressure spike as vocal racism and implicit classism are preventing me, ME, the supposedly all-powerful player, from progressing in Morrowind's Mages guild ranks. I feel powerless. Do I take it in? Do I give up and leave? Do I fight? Is anyone going to help me?…

For every art form, there are very, very few works where pointing at "the message" is an useful way to justify their value. Meaning only really shows itself plain to people willing to engage with the devices specific to the form.

Kala Paint is out! I'm @olawson.bsky.social , professional artist for 15 years, then game dev, now wrote the painting software I wish I'd been using all this time. GPU-run creamy brushes, no subscription, no gen AI crap, hand-coded with ideas from artists in our Discord, and more added weekly!

You could always temporarily reupload their screens with attribution, and then set up a plan to go through the entire collection one title at a time and replace the screenshots at your own pace.

Based on their ToU "You may use up to 20 MobyGames screenshots in an article or project, commercial or non-commercial, as long as you provide credit." I would *personally* avoid rehosting them long-term, as I don't want to argue what is or is not an individual article/project. Maybe ask them?

that being said apologies for only engaging with the structure and the presentation as a first reaction. a bit of geeking out because I loved it so much but in a way I'm reproducing the pattern shown so well in the piece of how the ways of the internet are invisibilizing the "trans" in trans stories

This last article drop on vacuum birefringence sounds like a potential new great way to look at stars! If this was a confirmed observation, could this phenomenon, along with better polarization measurements of the surroundings of e.g. magnetars, help us probe some previously unreachable physics?

After reading the paper more in detail I'm not sure where I picked the especially proto- aspect of it. This is just mind-blowing news to me, but I understand wanting to stay factual and leaving the elaboration to others. Brilliant paper, I'm chuffed

That was awesome. Q. from a non-astronomer: is it correct to say that this object behaves like a proto-quasi-star? The link to LRDs is even established but "quasi-star" isn't mentioned once in the body (references do). Personal preference of the authors?

If you're not radically opposed to AI it seems natural to pick coding as the component most susceptible to low impact dev quality of life improvements. Considering how many coders don't gaf about their toolchains or SW architecture, I think that tracks. Me, I'd sooner automate project management.

Playing Exo Rally Championship has been inspiring for how I would do an open world. Racing has a lot of clichés but allows for fast and methodical traversal. Been thinking of a game where you're a racer but never get a racing quest in the story. Instead it's geophysical surveys and transport/rescue

Purely aesthetic comment: this brings back fond memories of early 3D games with flat shaded polygons on basic primitives, those screens are triggering nostalgia for Mercenary 2 & 3 on the Amiga especially. Interesting games…

Happy to see positive experience from a dev, from a reader's pov it's also one of the best forms of news feed, better than visiting each platform/social. I also like the idea of blogging on a game delivery platform that provides a RSS feed (e.g. Steam or itch.io) but RSS is less passive & more niche

That was a nice read. Without at least a vague knowledge of the training corpus, a solid understanding of the scope of each decomposable step of the problem you are prompting, or some awareness of the common modes of hallucination, any use of a LLM kinda sounds dangerous to mental health to me.

I wonder if in the west, big, universal principles tend to take more cultural mind space. E.g. is AI there being pushed as a paradigm and world changing event as much as it is here? The cultural zeitgeist allows me to systems-think myself into being an "AI-hater" but this feels very western.

Why not both? I have worked extensively with Chinese colleagues, while they definitely had a more generally positive outlook, the core of their attitude was driven by "let's find a way to make it work now with whatever's available to us today, no point overcomplicating it thinking about tomorrow"
