NT. HALLWAY, RESORT OFFICE CENTER (CONTINUOUS)

Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov stand outside the Conference Room, the door shut behind them. Unclear what else he should be doing with them, or himself; Shane shoves his hands in his pockets.

INSERT SHOT- A visual reprise. Metal chairs - the CLOSED AUDITIONS sign - A ticking clock. The hallway is no longer empty.

Ilya pulls out a box of cigarettes, and a lighter.

SHANE
I just wanted to say- you were great in there.

ILYA
I know.

He places a roll between his lips, and offers another to Shane wordlessly.

SHANE
(eyes flicking to his lips(struck out) the cigarette)
I don't think you can smoke in here.

ILYA
Okay.
(after an extended pause, and a word muttered in Russian that sounds suspiciously like ‘Canadians')

SHANE
Okay.

Ilya removes the cigarette.

ILYA
We can smoke outside.

SHANE
Oh- No- I don't smoke.

(a beat)
Neither should you, actually.

Ilya looks at Shane like he's grown another head.

ILYA
Lots of hot movie stars smoke, Shane Hollander.

SHANE
Yeah. Yeah, of course.

The stale Office Center air fills with their silence. Shane almost wishes it was cigarette smoke instead, the way it clogs his lungs and restricts his breathing.
He leans against the wall, unclear how to exit the conversation, or resume it, and fixates on the shine of his shoes

Ilya slips the cigarette back into the carton, with all the care of a father tucking a child into bed.

ILYA
Your Russian accent is good.

SHANE
Thank you.
(pause)
Think I'll get a call back?

ILYA
Do you speak Russian?

SHANE
Uh- No. Nyet. Not yet.

ILYA
Then no.

SHANE
Wow- (Laughing, the backofhis head thumping the wall as his gaze moves from his shoes to the fluorescents)
I mean, they say you're cocky but-

ILYA
Who says this?

SHANE
I dunno- Industry folks-tabloids-
Ilya half shrugs one shoulder.

ILYA
What do they know about my cock?
All the color drains from Shane's face, and he clears his throat in an awkward half-hearted cough. If he'd been drinking, he might have done a spit-take.

ILYA (CONT' D)
I should go.

SHANE
(clearly flustered)
Uh- yeah, for sure. Me too.

ILYA
(with the tiniest smirk)
Good luck, Hollander. You will need it.

INT. CONFERENCE ROOM - MID AFTERNOON

CASTING DIRECTOR

THE SHOT WIDENS- on the Casting Director. The recording light winks one more time to the audience, then - nothing.

CASTING ASSISTANT (flipping back
through the pages of the script)

CASTING DIRECTOR (more to his
Assistant than the actors)
Actually- that was great. Call it. No notes.

SHANE

CASTING DIRECTOR

No notes.

SHANE

ILYA (interrupting)
Is that it?
The Casting Director clasps his hands together. A clap.

Singular. Congratulatory.

CASTING DIRECTOR (leaning back in his chair)
That's it. Nice and easy. You've both done some awesome work today.

SHANE
You don't want us to-he tosses a throwaway look to Ilya, who only stares in return)

CASTING DIRECTOR

No- I think we're-(to his fellow disciples, now leaning forward, in a hushed tone) -we're good here?

The table of crew and directors nod, humming a consenting chorus.

CASTING DIRECTOR (CONT'D)
Yeah- We've got all we need.
Cheers guys. Appreciate it.

SHANE
Thank you.

ILYA

LILY

COLD READ
BLUE SCRIPT

The Casting Assistant re-enters, with ILYA ROZANOV.
From the unending well of scripts, The PA procures a script for Rozanov too. Crew flitter about, re-adjusting and recentering equipment.

THROUGH THE CAMERA VIEWFINDER- The boys stand abreast of each other.

SHANE
(staring straight ahead)
Ilya Rozanov?

SHANE (CONT' D)
Shane Hollander.

He turns, then, to offer a handshake. The moment stretches heavy between them. Ilya accepts after a pregnant beat, shaking his hand and nodding a stilted acknowledgment.

Shane goes to say something more, but concedes the interaction has ended. Instead, he skims the audition script.

Pink shooting script for COLD AS ICE
Revised 27/10/2010

COLD AS ICE
written by
L.

Competitive figure skater Lily Lockwood has dreamt of representing Team Canada since she was old enough to walk, old enough to talk, and then old enough to wear skates.

And now she's here, at the Vancouver Olympics, with a home turf advantage, and her best-friend beside her.

EVERYTHING is coming up Lily.
NOTHING will get in her way.
Unless NOTHING is Russian skater Alexander Zaitsev.

COLD AS ICE - SHOOTING SCRIPT - PINK

INT. OLYMPIC ICE RINK, NIGHT

Bright lights flare off the surface of the rink, blinding the audience. It's impossible to make out the scene. What should be a spectacle- the pinnacle of human athleticism- is reduced down to it's very essence. Winter, snow glare, white, bodies.

SOUND CUE- A crack- LOUD- of ice, on a lake. Breaking.

BIRD’S EYE VIEW- Team Canada is down. Broken. Bodies hit the ice. They stumble towards the barrier, tipping into the Kiss and Cry beside the judges' panel.

MEDICS launch at the pair.
LILY launches at the JUDGES.
LILY'S COACH launches at Lily.

DRAMATIC ZOOM - Grainy video of Lily from the live television coverage as commentary chatter buzzes over the footage. Blink and you'll miss it, the camera passes over a FIGURE launching through the stands.

COMMENTATOR #1
(V.O) A devastating blow for Canada, Jim - falling at the last hurdle-literally.

COMMENTATOR #2 (V.o - through
a sharp, hissing inhale)
You know that's just gotta sting, Ralph-

COMMENTATOR #1
Let's hope the Lockwood
Team's not allergic- to bees or failure-

FROM BLUE SCRIPT:

By page two, the words jumble together. Shane mouths the same line, over and over and over...

PINK SCRIPT:

HARD CUT TO:
INT. OLYMPIC ICE RINK, KISS AND CRY
Lily twists her upper body over the barrier, contorting. Her hair, wild and disinterested in remaining in her skater's bun, falls across her face.

BLUE SCRIPT:
His hair, a blond halo of curls, falls across his handsome face.

PINK SCRIPT:

LILY
(desperately, pleading to the judges)
I can do it. Please- let me get back on the ice- please- I know I can-

COACH
(out of breath, grappling his skater away from the side of the rink)
Lily. Stop.

LILY
I can finish.
(she whips her head towards her coach)
We can finish.

COACH
Brandon's out, he's not-

LILY
Not Brandon. You.

COACH
You know they're not going to let me-

LILY
okay- fuck, Cap- Or-
Or one of the other skaters-
Any goddamn Canadian-
This isn't- This wasn't-

COACH
I know, kid.
But that's it. It's over.

Lily deflates like a balloon, limp.

The Casting Director flicks out his wrist, revealing the watch under his jacket cuff. He checks the time.

CASTING DIRECTOR
Fuck.

PA
Yeah--

CASTING DIRECTOR
And--?

PA
Waiting--

The Casting Director holds up a hand to silence the PA and the team falls into formation; the Directors side-baring amongst themselves, heads together, a huddle.

The Writer passes a note to the Assistant Director, who passes it to The Film Director, who passes it to the Casting Director- who then mutters something in agreement.

THE SOFT CLICKING OF A LENS ADJUSTING- Focus shifts back to Shane, framed by the barrel of the camera.

CASTING DIRECTOR
I'm so sorry Shane -
(he scrubs a hand over his face)
(CONT 'D)
God, what an unprofessional production you must think we have going here-

SHANE
Not at all-

CASTING DIRECTOR (under his breath, but loud enough to overhear)
-really, wouldn't blame you-

SHANE
I'm just honored to be considered.

CASTING DIRECTOR
Great to have you here.

The Casting Director reshuffles paperwork in front of him and clears his throat.

CASTING DIRECTOR (CONT' D)
Our Reader-

He hands off a spare script to a PA.

CASTING DIRECTOR (CONT'D)
Our Reader hasn't returned from lunch- a mess, I know - and we've already taken up so much - (beat) enough of your time-

The PA distributes the script to Shane.

CASTING DIRECTOR (CONT'D)
We don't want to have to call you back in tomorrow for one simple cold read- and vise versa- so - HUGE ASK, Shane, and it is huge - the audition after yours, it's our last, ergo- in a sort of a two birds, one stone situation...
would you mind?

SHANE (confused)
Would I mind...?

Another script finds itself in the Casting Director's outstretched hand.

CASTING DIRECTOR
One pass over- and then- y'know-roles reversed-

SHANE
Sorry- who-? If-

CASTING DIRECTOR
Ilya Rozanov.

The Casting Assistant slinks around the lines of the room and exits into the hallway.

SHANE
Would I mind reading with Ilya Rozanov?

INT. RESORT OFFICE CENTER - MIDDAY

SHANE HOLLANDER sits outside a Conference Room turned Make-Shift Audition Space, crammed onto a fold-out metal chair.

Somewhere, a clock ticks.

CLOSED AUDITIONS - Shane stares down the signtapedtothe Conference Room door like it holds some immutablepowerto grant his heart's greatest desire. He staresitdownlikehe secretly believes it just might.

A CASTING ASSISTANT exits the Conference Room. Shane blinks.

CASTING ASSISTANT

CONFERENCE ROOM
Shane enters, and Shane counts: Four walls, two softbox lights, three tables pushed together- or one long table, maybe. A tripod, a camera, at minimum three PAs. Not so dissimilar to every other audition room he has stood in before now.

He was quite striking like this, wasn't he?
Ed. Under the ambient glow of a kitschy photo booth; tanned, tattooed arms bare, dark waves falling across his forehead, irises as big as dinner plates, swallowing the deep umber of his eyes— sharp and unreadable as they were.
It wasn't the first time Stede had noticed, Ed was a good looking man, after all.
Handsome, some might say. He must've had girls tossing themselves at him, constantly— 'Ladykiller! Wow, your eyes, they glow!'
And it wasn't the first time they'd been in such close proximity, either— so crowded in each other's space that Stede could count Ed's sunspots or admire the piercing nestled neatly in his eyebrow or watch his eyelashes wisp across his cheeks-but there was something about this Ed, close and compelling, that had him entranced him so completely.

Idly, Stede wondered if he could map out the soft planes of Ed's face, convert it to memory so that he might never forget. How long would it take, to chart the slope of his cheekbones, the valley of his dimples?
"The camera's ready." He said, because Stede didn't actually have enough time to recall all the small, intimate details of Ed's features. The camera would do it for him.
"You said that." Ed said, voice husky and rumbling, and Stede could feel it reverberating in his chest where they were pressed together, barely a sliver of light separating them.
"Right." Stede wanted to look back towards the camera, he did. But something held him there, glued to Ed like a mouse in a trap— something yawning and big and demanding. Something he didn't have a name for. Maybe Ed did. Maybe Ed knew what to call it. He was clever and worldly like that.
The aforementioned camera clicked over, pulsing again and illuminating the cramped space. Ed lit up like a beacon, a sacred glowing torch in the darkness and Stede was consumed by it, by him, by the flex of his hands at his waist, by—

A deep-rooted sense of wrongness.
It caught him unawares. An itch under his skin. A prickling down his spine. An empty dread. But Ed wasn't—
Wrong.
Ed was perfect.
Wrong.
Clearing the scratch in his throat, Stede turned away, facing the camera with a smile, his arm looping around Ed's broad shoulders. A hot, accusatory sigh fanned across the nape of his neck. Another flash.
Brilliant, jarring. Stede smiled down the lens but was woozy with light sickness, or— woozy with something. He felt off-balance, faint, muddled— his thoughts slow, like molasses.
"Do you think they have bandaids?" Stede questioned, absent-mindedly rolling the cotton of Ed's crop top between his fingers as he waited for the camera to reload.

"What?" Ed asked blankly. Stede's averted gaze returned to Ed's.
"Do you think the arcade has bandaids?
For my head— I do feel a bit dizzy."
In an instant, Ed's expression sombered to mild worry as he reached towards Stede's temple, assessing the damage. "You're not bleeding." Ed said astutely, dusting a curl away from Stede's face, thumb pressing to his brow bone to turn his head slightly to the side. "'s not even a bump," Then, incredulous— "You really want a bandaid?"
"You suggested it!"
Ed made a low, amused sound of confirmation. "It was a dumb when I said it too."
"I dunno! Maybe it'll make me feel better, even if— I mean, it doesn't hurt, per se but, it's the... placebo effect, right?" Stede asked.
"Mm," Ed hummed, "Maybe they have fun ones, with like... hot dogs on them, or something."
