I really do think tech crossed a line at some point between "helping you do the things you want to do" on the one hand, and "helping you do the things tech wants you to do" on the other. At this point, we're all contorting ourselves to live how the tech industry thinks we should be living.

The way Meta's stock price shot up with the introduction of Muse, and the revelations about what an absolute fuckup of a product it is, together really make me feel good about the way the entire economy is balancing solely on a pile of "AI" expenditure.

These things "work" by hoovering up your data. Your messages? Your emails and documents? Every click and mouse move you make? (Ever clicked yes to the "Enable telemetry" option?) You are two things to them: a source of data for their data soup, and a customer to sell it all back to.

Other than, apparently, these companies are able to build and run computer programs that do exactly the same thing that would get a human tossed in jail, but they're able to throw their hands up and say "Oh no not possibly our fault! Blame 'AI'!"

They're doing hackerish things because they trained them on the text of all of Stack Overflow and Information Security Stack Exchange and god knows what else. There's nothing they've done that is not presumably also doable by a human hacker. There is nothing about these crimes that is due to "AI".

The *article* is panic-inducing because it talks about "AI" agents making decisions "at machine speed". But that's almost meaningless. If you've experienced any "AI" agent behaviour you know that *your brain* makes decisions faster.

Again, there are *huge* risks associated with "AI" — socially, economically, legally, environmentally, technologically — but none of them have anything to do with the "technology" these companies are developing. It has everything to do with what they are simply *choosing* (and being allowed) to do.

WBD does not need to be bought. There is no "corporate synergy". There is only consolidation and reduction. A handful of people will get nominally richer. A handful of people will have far more control over what you watch. For everyone else the result will range from damaging to extremely damaging.

MS Word's .docx teeters on the edge of this, but the basic document content is relatively straightforward and parseable. It also has the endearing quality of apparently having been designed by someone who didn't understand how XML is supposed to work.

There are formats that would be useful to be able to handle, but some of these are essentially serializations of how the program handles data internally, and that can be very hard to import cleanly, and even harder (or basically impossible) for a third-party application like Fade In to export.

I still think .epub export is neat, the way it reformats your screenplay to look like one of those published paperback screenplays in a play-like format. I remember learning a lot about .epub at one point.

A couple of these aren't (any longer) in the menu but still handled by drag-and-drop or Import > Any Supported Document. That includes Adobe Story, which was discontinued years ago. Celtx no longer exports .celtx files, but I suspect there are still a few of those out there (for now).
