One of the most interesting biographies I discovered during my #DecolonisingChemistry project for the @chemistryatyork.bsky.social curriculum was that of Alice Ball a black chemist, whose leprosy treatment, using carbonyl chemistry to build on traditional medicine, was stolen by a male colleague.
Portrait of Alice Ball including images of the Chaulmoogra plant and its conversion into a leprosy treatment.

Yesterday I attended a conference delivered by a very distinguished colleague who put AI on every slide in a completely unnecessary way - meaning that it brought no information at all, it was just for the show.

Are there sources somewhere helping to deal with ADHD colleagues and students? In a few situations I really would need help to protect them and myself... In one case, the ADHD person is diagnosed and openly speaking about it (with me at least), attributing a lot of behaviours to the ADHD,....

I have a question, of which I should probably know the answer as a chemist, but I don't When we cut something, e.g. with a knife or with scissors, do we actually break covalent chemical bonds?

Titre : AI and human mathematics

Paragraphe :

The past months have been very agitated in the academic world due to the numerous claims from
mathematicians and AI companies to have solved conjectures using Large Language Models, i.e., LLM. As things are moving extremely fast, while writing this project, it is very difficult to predict how it will impact our way of doing research. At the moment, I am not using LLM myself as I do not find that the conditions are satisfied for an ethical use of those tools, neither from a scientific point of view, nor environmental. Whatever role they play in the future, one thing I am convinced of is that the goal of research is to get a better understanding of the world and that can be achieved only with a human mind. This has always been my approach and it is still so in this project in the current context: to understand how things work and convey that understanding to others. In particular, I think we should concentrate more on what we build rather than what we only solve, especially now that there seem to be some serial solvers around.

The world’s 280 million electric bikes and mopeds are cutting demand for oil far more than electric cars
Electric vehicles get all the press – but it’s the smaller unsung two wheelers cutting oil demand the most.
