Been a while since I posted but I am still cycling and shooting local pics. More details in the #alttext #stratford #ontario #canada #cycling #photography
A classic red barn and silo on a near horizon just west of an old farmhouse nestled in a copse of trees. The foreground is a field of golden stubble bordered by sky left and top and a row of maples wearing every colour from summer green to fire of Hades red and orange. The sky is American midwest/World War II silk stockings a soldier gave to a French girl blue - gently textured and delicate as a robin's egg. A stark Skeletor-like leafless tree stands like an inverted granite lightning bolt before a wide open Montana-like sky over gold fields either side of a lonely gravel road. It is sunny, dry and cool out this late October day, but also unusually warm. Fluffy grasses gone to seed by the roadside tilt left in a gentle breeze as we whizz home just west of St. Pauls near the centre of southwest Ontario. The sky is pale blue with streaks of cirrus. Nearly home, we enter town from the southwest and just passing the Jobsite brewpub, we find this lovely view down the main CNR line toward the station whose roots reach back to the 1830's. Some Halloween decos (a ghost-sheeted skeleton minding a skeleton dog) sit on the lawn of a period Ontario cottage painted to match today's sky - see related pics in this post. The road and the tracks diverging and converging in the foreground help lead the eye around the whole image. Clearly, it’s a lovely fall day and we've had a fantastic little ride out there in the barren wilderness of local farmland.

me to Simplii AI agent: you just told me this: To move money from your Simplii account to your own account at another Canadian financial institution, you can use either: Flinks Funds Transfer, if the other institution supports it.

Now you are telling me the opposite; how can believe anything you say?

AI: You're right to question that. | gave you contradictory information, and my earlier statement that Flinks Funds Transfer could send money from Simplii Financial to another bank was incorrect.

The correct information is that Flinks is used to move money from an eligible
external Canadian financial institution into an eligible Simplii Financial
account. It does not provide a confirmed method for sending money out of Simplii Financial to another bank.

I'm sorry for the confusion. I should have... blah, blah, blah...

Dusk approaches as a couple in a pick-up call in a downed live wire to a single dwelling whose lights are out. The three limb lays across the road and the wire, noticed on closer approach hangs from a nearby pole beneath it. A big tree limb down beside a house dating to early in the last century or perhaps late in the century prior. Its a big chunk of wood, a ton or two maybe, clothed in still vibrant summer greenery. A stormy sky, all sharp cloud edges, strata and campfire colours provides the backdrop to a single passenger awaiting the bus at a small town station. The bus's lights are lit, full darkness being not far off. Towering cumulus stands castle-like above and below (reflected via the lake) a residence dimly lit by a portable generator in the midst of a local power outage. The colours are all grey and taupe in the late twilight glow of approaching night.

County Road 135 between St. Marys and Stratford. A crowd of roadside rushes, rust stalked and green topped, stands in the foreground of a wide shot taken on a stinky hot humid day on the ride back to town, km 55 or so of a stinky hot rural cycle outing. A lone telephone pole stands off to the right some 50 meters southeast of the crossroads we’re at (135 and 16, I think), a golden field of stubble to the left, and a long distance off a few trees under a hazy pastel sky of scrambled blue, white and grey just starting to show signs of lifting and cumulus development.

Spooky weird derelict structure out back of beyond in Hooterville (Kirkton), Ontario. Kinda place that might be seen in a rural America true crime doc on TV... #gravelbike #cycling #photography #ontario #canada
A building probably constructed in the 1940's or 50's when the highway system was in development, now dilapidated, abandoned and locked. Weeds and rubble line its foundation, its metal roof is rusting and decades old formerly white paint is streaked with stains. An overhang casts a long shadow over a concrete riser running its full frontal width and behind some bushes nature has installed, it appears connected to an ancient concrete silo that's about a third of the height of any serious farm silo. One can only guess at its former ownership and purpose.

Bridge out in nowheresville with caution signs and hefty concrete blocks barring the way.

Gravel road goes on forever. This is near the Thames above Woodstock.

Plenty of room for a gravel bike tho. Long shot on approach to the first deprecated bridge. It looks tiny at the end of a hall of tall green midsummer trees. We’re on gravel and loving it out here. The rusted overhead ironwork of an early 20th century country bridge, signposted with a 16 ton max load, supporting a concrete deck against a flat blue late afternoon sky. A view over the bars of a gravel bike with a sharp-cornered German made Sigma cyclocomputer looking very Panther tank-like showing a speed of 39 km/h and crank RPM of 106. An intersection looms in the near distance.

A small town telephone pole snapped clean about six feet up. An orange cone, low wire flags and cleanliness give evidence of the utility having been at work on this street of late 19th century houses. A pale courgette and some beets still on the stalk against a black background. The beet stalks look a bit like organized wiring. BBQ with aforementioned veggies and two chicken breasts becoming nicely browned. The presentation is over last night's leftovers of couscous, roasted red pepper and roasted cremini mushrooms.

A lonely country road, dry and grey in the summer heat, stretches out to some trees and a distant horizon on a windy humid day on the tail end of a major toxic smoke event across eastern North America. A few cars can be seen on a four lane street in small town Southwest Ontario. A sand coloured gravel bike about 45 km from home rests against the post holding up a historical plaque described in the next photo's alttext. Historical sign in the middle of nowhere (Whalen Corners), Southwest Ontario.

The sign gives a history of the corners in the horse and wagon age, the postal services of the time, the general store (gone), with its postmaster (long-deceased), and a highway smoothing of 1935 that led to the razing of a few other places.

Plus the mob murder of a Donnelly brother (mistaken for someone else) by a local gun-toting church group ('The Peace Society') on the heels of their murder of his parents, another brother, and a cousin.

It's a long local/national story with books about it.

Aside: OCR failed miserably on a transcription attempt, sorry. Looking down a deserted rural road in Southwest Ontario. A hot summer day: blue sky, a few billows of cumulus, greenery in riot at the edges of fields and in the valleys and towns where it still has a foothold, and the empty road Very similar to prior shot but with a large tree at right that gives scale to our small presence on an entirely human-powered gravel bike out back of nowhere in Canada's hay, corn and soybean country.

To our right is a small parcel of protected land in the midst of overwhelming flat farm country, the Ellice Swamp. We live on a high plateau about as high as the CN Tower main pod. A puddled lane leading off to an old farm outbuilding divides the frame between what makes sense (shrubbery at left, the lane) and what doesn't. On the right is a farmhouse in ruins, its collapsed walls and windows at vertiginous angles, the top floor having fallen at all but one corner. There is junk everywhere, a green tarp, as if the ruin has perhaps been used as a dwelling. No humans to be sensed or seen anywhere. The bushes are starting to assert themselves. Impossible to tell whether weather caused, contributed or didn't affect the chaos. Abandoned gardens, long forgotten projects. But fairly fresh KEEP OUT signs.

Thank you for taking action to demand MPs withdraw Bill C-22 — Canada's dangerous new surveillance bill!

You just sent a very clear message. Canadians are saying no to: e Surveillance backdoors built into every digital service we use;
e A year-long database of every Canadian's private metadata; ® Privacy protections the government can quietly redefine away; e A faster path for foreign governments to access our data.

We need to stop Bill C-22 and we need to stop it now. That's going to require your MP hearing from as many constituents as possible before this bill moves further. Please share this campaign with your friends and family today!

Let us compare the Constitution to a boat with Washington, James Madison and the several others fishing from it with the states as fishes. Some of these little suckers got hooked right off but New York and Virginia, the bass, put up a hard fight in which Patrick Henry took Virginia's part against James Madison. Patrick Henry won but the line was too strong and he along with Virginia came aboard. New York was caught easily and only Rhode Island remained. She would not be caught so they threatened to dynamite the pool, that is, to treat her as a foreign country, so she bit and the thirteen states stood a “New Nation under God.”

Horace Greeley was the worst defeated candidate ever elected.

Looking down from the rider's view, the controls of a gravel bike, outboard rearview mirror on the far left of the left bar and the inboard forward-facing mirror (same small egg-shaped type) mounted on the handlebar stem. The keys to comfort are: a clear unobstructed view in both, having both on the same lateral plane so either remains visible when the other is being peered into, and lots of practice to read the upside-down image while also monitoring lane position, road edge, etc. Close up of the forward view mirror. I'd hoped for a crisp image of the road ahead as I see it riding, but of course my phone zeroed in on the high contrast black frame, leaving nothing else in proper focus. The book cover features a fabulously dark and foreboding view of downtown on a dark and stormy day (lol) with the tip of the CN tower lifting one's gaze up into the austere white and mustard sans serif type of the book's title.

This is such a cunning, shameless, beautiful scam. Got an email from Equifax (who exposed zillions of records to hackers not long ago if memory serves), the gist of which was: 'Nice credit rating you got there. Be a shame if something happened to it...' I […] [Original post on mastodon.online]
email from Equifax warning of people accessing credit info potentially being scammersLink followed to see what can be done about this - the Equifax page provides an option promising helpOh, help is going to cost you $35/month minimum. And if you don't subscribe (which I didn't) and something happens, you can guess they'll blame it on you for not subscribingMaybe an agent can clarify. They've got a bot helper, so I ask it. Nope, no agents available. But you can call a 1-866 number and spend oodles of unpaid time waiting for someone to tell you you're wasting your time (which you already knew).

A deserted intersection on a county road, mid-April. The sky is a wash of white and light blue. A stop sign cherry atop a skewer, the white 'stop here' line, a lone telephone pole, empty road ahead, though not far from town.

The astros obviously saw a giant cat back-side of the moon (waiting for mice to go for the cheese, doubtless) and NASA is not telling us. #caturday #artemis #nasa #photography

Will LLM's eventually hold hostage our entire body of technical knowledge and understanding of how stuff works? And eventually charge us a fee/sign-up to get at anything that was once freely and openly available? See: superfastpython.com @pluralistic #python #ai #llm

The minimap of the first python app I've written that's really made me happy (a 50:50 analyzer - billions of dice throws—gah!!) looks like my home cityscape turned on its side... Isn't that the Dome? #linux #python #mathematics #science #alttext
A mostly black canvas with towers of colour made by pixelated code turned on it's side. Maybe we're looking from across a black bay under a black sky - as befits the times.
