$Joint statement from PEFP and RJOC on Hannah Gann’s Rachel Dolezal situation reading: We have recently discovered that one of our long-time members, Hannah Gann, has completely lied about her identity and background, claiming at various times to be Palestinian, Tunisian and Black. Members met with Hannah and questioned her about her background on Thursday and after over an hour of discussion, Hannah finally admitted she lied. We asked her to publicly acknowledge that she is a white woman of Jewish heritage and an Israeli settler family. We are stunned, saddened, and angered by this betrayal. We will no longer work with Hannah, and she will no longer be welcome in any of our organizing spaces. We recognize the profound harm this has caused; Palestinians whose identity and struggle were appropriated, the Black community, young people, organizers, and organizations whose trust and resources were exploited, as well as those who supported Hannah based on false information. We hope that support will not be used to discredit the people who acted in good faith. We also acknowledge the significant and emotional labor used to bring this information forward, particularly the heavy lifting of Palestinian and Black women. That labor and the harm experienced must not be erased. An admission is a beginning step but it is not accountability. We are reviewing Hannah's access to organizational information, examining any resources she received through misrepresentation of identities, and determining what repair and safe guards are necessary. We stand in love and solidarity with the communities, organizing spaces, and young people affected by this manipulation and betrayal. We will not allow her actions to distract us from our purpose or fracture the community we've worked hard to build. Our freedom work continues with increased care, transparency and protection for the communities most impacted by her betrayal and lies.$
